Idea: Printing out Your Fanfiction with a Front Cover on It (814)

1 Name: Anonymous : 2009-10-18 10:34 ID:wBoyvyw5

When there is an offline meeting, I think that it might be a good idea for each person who goes to the meeting to print out their fanfiction so that it can be shared with others. However, I think that it is best for everybody to have a front cover for their fanfiction when they print it out: a single page in front of their fanfiction so that its title is clearly visible, so that it has a unique visual appearance, and so that one can show it to others in real life more easily. It may not seem like much, but I think that it can go a long way towards making fanfiction more presentable, recognizable, and more easily shared in real life (during an offline meeting), rather than for it to look like just a jumble of text.

If you are not good at drawing or if you do not know anybody who can draw for you, then you can just have a simple cover with nothing except the title on it. Everybody should be able to do that.

With a front cover, you can then print out one (or more, if you wish) copy of your fanfiction (or the first few chapters of it, if it is too long) and put the front cover as the first page, so that it can be shown to others in real life at an offline meeting.

What do you people think of this idea?

2 Name: Harbinger of Doom : 2009-10-18 10:47 ID:tu5jHFmC

Its interesting. However, we've got to be careful with copyright laws. Im unsure if distributing printed copies is allowed...

3 Name: Anonymous : 2009-10-18 10:54 ID:wBoyvyw5

>>2
It is not distributing since it is just showing it to others: printing one copy to show to others. Even if it is distributing fanfiction, it can hardly be considered public distribution since it is only to other fanfiction writers.

However, even if you print multiple copies and distribute to others, it's not like anybody is going to know about it other than the people who show up at the meeting, right? You get in trouble only if a copyright holder sues you, and the chances of getting caught is pretty much 0.

4 Name: Tanuki-Gao : 2009-10-18 10:57 ID:6yDei+/U

The idea of distributing Fanfiction with a front cover with a simple yet attrative design (with or without drawings) is a good idea.
Harbinger of Doom has a point about copyright laws, but surely, if you include a disclaimer e.g ''I don't own Naruto...'' blah blah blah a top the first page of the fan fiction, i'm sure there shouldnt be any qualms.

5 Name: Anonymous : 2009-10-18 11:02 ID:wBoyvyw5

Also, it is not like anybody is going to make any money from this, so I don't see how copyright could be a problem.

6 Name: Harbinger of Doom : 2009-10-18 11:22 ID:tu5jHFmC

Yeah, the chances of getting caught are pretty low xD And it is a pretty cool idea. Maybe we could get the Fan-artists among us to design front covers :P

7 Name: Love of escapism : 2009-10-18 11:23 ID:3ruY9WJE

I think that this is a great idea, it will help establish fanfic and more people will become aware of it!

8 Name: Anonymous : 2009-10-18 11:29 ID:wBoyvyw5

>>6
Well, since there are not so many fanartists on this website, and since this is a new idea, perhaps it might be best to start with everyone designing their own covers: just start with a blank page, type the title in there somewhere, and then put whatever else one wants to put on it (it could be a little or a lot... or none, if one is lazy).

Maybe later, people can start drawing covers for others, and perhaps people could even work in teams to write fanfiction and then make a cover for it, but right now, perhaps it might be best to start very simple with everyone designing their own covers.

9 Name: shona(murtaghxblaiseyum) : 2009-10-18 12:07 ID:2LjNTWOa

Its a great idea,It will be more like a book sorta of thing then just a webpage of words.
And the only people making money is the fanartist if they charge.
I give this idea a 10/10

10 Name: Anonymous : 2009-10-18 12:16 ID:wBoyvyw5

>>9
I don't think anybody should make money from this though - besides, if a fanartist wants to draw a cover for somebody else, then they should do so because they want to, not because they were paid.

11 Name: Serpent Sna[e : 2009-10-18 12:52 ID:Cr8Z/9sg

I think that producing a front cover for fanfiction is a good idea. On some fiction sites such as harrypotterfanfiction.net you can create a banner for you stories and I think people pay more attention to the ones with banners. The same with Potions and Snitches, sometimes there is a picture. I'm not much of an artist by anyones standards but if I could I would definitely make a cover for fanfiction, it makes the fiction seem more appealing in a way.

12 Name: CrumbleIntoMyArms : 2009-10-18 13:44 ID:oUS+89JG

Hmm, interesting topic.
Fan art would help with descriptions with characters, but something's need to be left up to the readers imagination. Although the cover would be a little more intriguing to the reader, it may confuse some people who have been away from the site and who have only (if it was agreed) just came back to it.

But it is a good idea, I must agree to that. I say there should be some kind of cover, but I don't know at the same time, I'm rambling in a way now so I guess I'll stop.

13 Name: -B-H-D- : 2009-10-18 14:03 ID:RcHx5Ff7

i think it's a good idea and i'm not much of an artist but my friends are and there also fanfic writters so they would probabley be willing to do something like that. Also i think it would make it look more professional

14 Name: Anonymous : 2009-10-18 14:14 ID:wBoyvyw5

>>11
Anyone can create a cover. Just type the name of the title of your fanfiction on a blank page. And then, you are done. That can be your cover.

15 Name: Imi : 2009-10-18 15:27 ID:9IApwPFK

Good idea, would make it look good. It would make a good 'selling' point for people to read your fanfic. You make a good front cover it will leave readers wanting to know more what the story is about... like a second summery for the fic i guess.
I would help the fan arts too! Where would there be a better place to get ideas for their art. Instant inspiration like that.
The fanfic writer would have to include the user name of the person who designed the cover. Don't forget the manners haha.

An idea that would work and make fanfiction a lot more interesting.

xx

16 Name: QueenoftheMods : 2009-10-18 16:25 ID:IT+mqUBp

Yeah, I think it would be a good idea, it would make people take their own work more seriously, thinking that's it's like a real book, & plus, though people tell you not to, lots of people DO judge books by their covers & an interesting cover would bring more attention in.

17 Name: Beau : 2009-10-18 18:05 ID:Rov1XsuL

This seems like a pretty good idea. I mean, doujins have covers and everything (even though it is a comic), but who says fanficition can't have covers? That does make it seem more like a book. As a wannabe illustrator I think that books give better impressions of whats in the inside, and I think that this applies to fanfiction as well. Nice idea.

18 Name: TehHyperactiveLollehpop : 2009-10-19 06:36 ID:79kRRsKs

That would be great to be honest...although, I think it should be optional.

19 Name: Lizzie Hopscotch : 2009-10-19 09:54 ID:GP+eFFpm

it would be be fun, although i agree with TehHyperactiveLollehpop that it should be optional. not all of us can draw of the tech know-how in loading such things

20 Name: Anonymous : 2009-10-19 09:55 ID:wBoyvyw5

>>19
If you can't draw, you can just have a simple cover with nothing in front except for the title. Anybody should be able to do that.

21 Name: Inuyashasesshy4eva : 2009-10-19 09:55 ID:h+DDqktE

Yeah, I totally agree. It would make the website far more eye-catching

22 Name: Anonymous : 2009-10-19 10:03 ID:wBoyvyw5

>>21
You mean fanfiction, because the idea behind having a cover is to print it out and show it to others in real life.

23 Name: Katie Lou Lou x : 2009-10-19 10:06 ID:EpMA4wN8

I think that this is a good idea, but wouldn't you just want to make a personalised front cover for your own story?
But overall, the cover would make the fan fiction site more appealing , but I quite like it the way it is :)

24 Name: Anonymous : 2009-10-19 10:14 ID:wBoyvyw5

>>23
No, the cover is not for putting up on a website. It is for printing out and showing to others.

25 Name: EmoWriterChick.94 : 2009-10-19 10:31 ID:gDQgTIWJ

Great idea :) It will be interesting to find out if people would actually turn to your stories with the front cover which you have designed. Also it could show the writer's personality and give experiance for the writer for if they want a future of publishing.
It will also be good to actually be able to discuss the different covers and stories and give ideas on how to improve because people always say they you learn from your mistakes, so to have other's helping you out, you can learn from those mistakes.

26 Name: GoThIc FaIrY gIrL : 2009-10-19 10:41 ID:ILF25jZ2

Heyhey loving the site yeah it is a cool idea I would try for that and it could advertise my stories which don't get a lot of reveiws so is you on fanfiction you will find me under a yugioh gx jun and asuka story called I think I love you chazz princeton
Cheak it out and tell my what you think

I think the idea is great!!

27 Name: pinkcatheaven : 2009-10-19 10:53 ID:XyTM9YqW

Has anyone ever heard of banners?
Certain people can make them, and they offer to, because some simply can't, or don't have the technology, or something. If fanfiction made it so that the picture could show somewhere, it would be quite good.
Obviously, it should be optional.
And, if there's too many, it can really clog up the page.

28 Name: Anonymous : 2009-10-19 11:03 ID:wBoyvyw5

>>27
That's right - which is why it is best suited for sharing with others in real life at an offline meeting with other fanfiction writers.

29 Name: Faith Bonksie : 2009-10-19 11:17 ID:xyeHWA12

I think this could be a good idea if it was an optional choice. Tho has anyone thought about any problems that may come about with copywrite, and disclaimers etc? We would have to be very caustious about this...

30 Name: Anonymous : 2009-10-19 11:19 ID:wBoyvyw5

>>29
There shouldn't be any problems with copyright, because nobody is making any money from this.

31 Name: LadeyJezzabella : 2009-10-19 12:09 ID:P+ddtlF0

I think this idea is pretty good, it would help make stories more recognisable and feel more like you're own.

xx

32 Name: Grim.Reapers.Besty : 2009-10-19 12:12 ID:5rhT3hzJ

I found it! And i got my laptop back! Sorry, just had to get that out. Anywho... Great idea! It gives something else to discuss, and shows either the writers personality, their story, or even better, both! Sorry, but i'm just a weensy hyper. Hence the word 'weensy'. CCCCCCOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLL!!!!!!!

33 Name: fezakyuu : 2009-10-19 12:19 ID:p0MZxPh3

That does sound like a dutty idea. But the only problem is that you can't post photos or even links when you put up a chapter or new fan fic, it just doesn't allow it, so you'd have to create your own website o something like that so others would be able to see your title page, but it is a good idea :)

Or you could just post the title page on deviantart because that allows you to post both a title page and a fic.

34 Name: Anonymous : 2009-10-19 12:21 ID:wBoyvyw5

>>33
Or, print it out.

35 Name: MissingDuckies : 2009-10-19 13:11 ID:0Q0KU9Vi

Love this idea! It could be great for face to face critiquing! And you'd also be able to read then discuss fully where the ideas came from! ... (Not mentioning the title page because mine would probably be the title, then a bit of coloured pencil patterns. xD)

36 Name: Flinch-Hayward : 2009-10-19 13:46 ID:87tvwrAu

>>35 Hey, coloured pencil patterns make the world go round.

37 Name: Origin Blue : 2009-10-20 08:17 ID:MADDmLgR

I have actually seen something like this done once for quite a long fanfic and it worked really well. I think it's a very good idea to use at an offline meeting.

38 Name: LongLiveInsanity : 2009-10-20 11:20 ID:zAA6Fjps

I think this is a good idea. In fact, I think it would also be nice if you could find a way of doing that on the computer as well, so every fanfiction has it's own little virtual cover. That way you could see if you might like it - they already have summaries, which are like blurbs, so why not make it like a proper book?

39 Name: Cressey : 2009-10-20 13:18 ID:MMl1WvAa

The main thing is, to give it a cover, to print it out even, would then be like saying it was yours, even if you weren't making money. I find it amazing that fanfiction writers cant see that you have a perfect story line and characters, but these characters have names from someone else. Just change the names and a few details and hay presto you have your own original short stories. there are some seriously amazing stories out there, but the original authors are taking half of the credit for creating the characters.
xx

40 Name: Anonymous : 2009-10-20 13:27 ID:wBoyvyw5

>>39
No, it wouldn't. It would just be printing it out and sharing it. If I print out someone else's news article to share with someone else, am I saying that I wrote that article? No. I am only sharing that news article. Likewise, printing out fanfiction is only sharing it. It has nothing to do with saying whether one "owns" it or not.

41 Name: Hawkeye : 2009-10-20 13:41 ID:WePkwOQL

I already give my fanfiction front page's when I print them (more as a hard copy in case my laptop, external HDD AND 2GB flash drive ALL die than to show it to people) but I suck at drawing so use the 'insert cover page' feature in Microsoft Word to do it then just print it off.

I suppose if I had more time and could actually draw, I would make my own... meh
/lazy

42 Name: Kimmeth : 2009-10-20 13:46 ID:NVnVyFTA

I think it's a good idea, it makes it seem more like proper literature, a bit like a book club. I've never printed out my stff before, mainly because I've never had reason to give it to someone in real life.

Hmmm. Yep, I support front covers. Although my artistic skills are near enough zero, so it would have to be a plain title-only page for me!

43 Name: Cressey : 2009-10-20 13:48 ID:MMl1WvAa

"If I print out someone else's news article to share with someone else, am I saying that I wrote that article?"

I'm not saying that just printing it out would infringe of copywright. Its when you put your name on it. It's like when you're in school and you print off a load of crap off of wiki and hand it in, using it under your name is where the trouble starts. I suppose as long as the disclaimers are in place it would be fine, but would you not prefer to have your hard work truly appreciated?
xx

Well, when it comes to fanfiction, you don't own the characters, but you do own the story that you created, so when you put a disclaimer on it saying "I don't own the characters," the story is still yours.

45 Name: AbsoluteAddiction-x : 2009-10-21 07:14 ID:k201f17I

The idea of putting a front cover on your fanfictions is, in my opinion, a really good one ^^
Okay, so putting a front cover on doesn't automatically give you the right to say you own everything, but it's a nice way to kind of say " Hey, i wrote this story, it's a products of my imagination" As long as you disclaimed at some point, i can't see a problem if you don't distribute it on a really large scale.

Plus, a front cover would make it look prettier and more professional ^^

46 Name: Kimly : 2009-10-22 00:53 ID:QrcnjfFy

Sounds like quite a good idea - I think there should probably be a little disclaimer on it and the actual creator/author's name too, but I like it. :) A proper mixture of fan-art and fiction.

Sharing them at a real meeting sounds like a plan - but some people might be reluctant to meet in person.

For people who can't/don't want to draw one, but want one, there could be a forum where they can request an image from someone else?

-Kimly (aka ZedPM on ff.net)

47 Name: Holly-SA-Cullen : 2009-10-22 08:42 ID:MADDmLgR

I think printing out fan fictions and making a cover for them are a brilliant idea. I've seen some people who have made covers for their stories, but posted them on their profile. With the right software, it could really take off.

48 Name: EgyptianShadowWolf : 2009-10-22 09:00 ID:mJ9iYyjb

I think this is great. Especially for all those writers who luv designing covers. a.k.a. me!!!!

I think this is great idea! i've made some front covers for my fan fics!

52 Name: SeeMyEvil : 2009-10-22 13:39 ID:9B2y53mn

I like the sound of that. :) It'd give your work more reality as well, to have it for other people to read right in front of you. Very nice - wish I'd thought of it. Haha ;P

53 Name: RufusTheZebra : 2009-10-22 15:18 ID:wPMctyyR

This is a great idea, but for the less artistic people, I think there should be a forum or something where people could request images (Kimly's original idea, not mine).

And it is nice to have your work in a proper little book, I think it gives you more satisfaction to have it physically in front of you rather than just text on a screen.

However, the correct disclaimers definately needed.

54 Name: Emzigale : 2009-10-23 16:05 ID:pj9vWCu/

I agree about the disclaimers, a definet must, I'm only gutted that I'm crap at art, I'd love to be able to make myself a front cover for my fan-fics, I cant even do an alright one for my original works. this is definetly another good idea though, maybe people who are god at art could create covers for the people who wrote the fic, they'd get credit at the meetings of course.

55 Name: Flinch-Hayward : 2009-10-24 05:19 ID:C+hlU1TJ

>>46 Well, look who it is! XD

Also, totally agree. I suck at manips, and Torchwood doesn't go well with the manga style I'm used to drawing in.

56 Name: Kathleen : 2009-10-24 09:11 ID:tS2mAHXf

It sounds like a good idea. It gives you (the writer) the chance to view your fanfiction as your own work, even if the characters are from someone else. adding a cover just makes it seem more professional, even if it's just a typed title.
Plus if you can draw (lucky people) it adds some more of your personal touch to it.
And a disclaimer would cover you, but maybe it could be on the other side of the page, or the next one.
Sharing a whole fanfiction might be tricky, depends how long it is. Maybe it would be better just to take the first/favourite chapter and a summary.

57 Name: AliceMxx : 2009-10-24 10:05 ID:hG8L2Qg1

I think it's a fab idea, more chance to get creative, more chance to feel even more accomplishment with your week.
sigh I wish I had really good ideas like this! :D

58 Name: Evil-lil-pixie : 2009-10-24 10:18 ID:4qWuUa+B

59 Name: Paula : 2009-10-24 13:38 ID:Kd9BfYeb

I really like this idea! I agree with you, it is a good way to make fanfiction more recognizable :)

60 Name: xXxSour-LemonxXx : 2009-10-24 13:56 ID:RhCgWaq8

I think this is a brilliant idea, it would really add character to your fanfic and would give it a more professional edge. After all, although fanwork, fanfiction authors are writers too, so why shouldnt we make our work look as professional and recognizable as possible?
Good idea anyway, I like it :)

61 Name: that creepy kid : 2009-10-24 14:24 ID:MADDmLgR

I agree it would really make it more realistic and it may even help with picureing charters

62 Name: Saba's Reflection : 2009-10-25 09:36 ID:5+Xhn0hM

I think this would make a brilliant idea. I've heard of websites which can make them for you, and even make your story into an actual novel. Of course there's a price but at least you'd get assistance with the front cover's design.

63 Name: nogin95 : 2009-10-25 09:53 ID:78tfGzHD

i like this idea, printing the story would make it look more offical and possibly make it better for the writer as it looks more presentable and like you have done more

64 Name: Skipper : 2009-10-25 10:00 ID:Ci+jyqJp

I like it, I can imagine feeling a feeling of deep accomplishment as I look at it XD.
I draw in a manga/anime style though so it'll beinteresting to see something like Pirates of the Caribbean in that style.

65 Name: WillowTree91 : 2009-10-25 10:37 ID:QcoNBOWO

I think having a cover for your fanfiction when you are showing it to other people is a good idea, especially if it does have some kind of artwork because it introduces the reader to the story. Even without artwork though it would be a good idea, like the title page in a book, it just makes the whole thing more presentable and accessible for the reader.

66 Name: Rockhardfairies : 2009-10-25 12:21 ID:GjiR6pp3

Well i think its a great idea! one every book that is published has a cover so why not. we publish our stories on fanfiction etc so we should make ours professional too! it adds a certain something when its all neat and tidy with a cover/picture/title! maybe it could also include a summary of the story as well?

67 Name: Rosa Angelicus : 2009-10-25 12:49 ID:EXUWTQnO

I think this is a great idea as well. I think it would make our work easier to recognise to fans and also gives off a professional edge to the work.

74 Name: Rexel Number 5 : 2009-10-26 09:24 ID:aGdMpnuv

Great idea. I love drawing pictures to go with my fanfics anyway, so it really wouldn't be a problem for me. More people would be interested in the fic in itself too if there's a picture to gain their attention!

75 Name: ShinigamiApples : 2009-10-26 09:26 ID:Zn8XlXNQ

yeah, this seems like a good idea (Y)
makes the fanfic seem more like a real story rather than an internet page or whatever, right?

It wouldn't even matter how well the pictures on the front were its more about the story.

81 Name: Dana-Lith : 2009-10-27 10:49 ID:ttq+ir/F

Seems like a really good idea. Personally i like printing out my fav fanfics so i can read them again and again anytime. Plus it's a way to get yourself and your ideas and talents out there. May end up drawing people in who hadn't come across fanfiction before or give others an inspiration to try writing or drawing things themselves :)

I have done this already for two of my fics and plan to have all of them done this way. So that if I or friends want to read them they don't always have to be read on the computer.

My friend is very good with photoshop and has made lovely banners for all of my stories. They can be seen on my lj http://mabel-marsters.livejournal.com

Made me feel very proud to see them printed out :D

87 Name: sweetcrimefighter : 2009-10-27 16:28 ID:Le13x5ec

I really like the sound of that, I always print out my fanfictions for some of my friends to read and think a front cover would be awsome.

88 Name: xxAlicexBrandonxCullenxx : 2009-10-27 17:14 ID:ELtSgjsM

I really think that it is an amazing idea. :D

89 Name: Link-lover : 2009-10-28 04:36 ID:eTjhlTFg

I've done that before. Not for a meeting with other fanfiction people, but I gave mine to an english teacher so I did a front cover.
Good idea. I don't know if the cover is relevant so much as the idea of trading your story with someome in person, but then, if you were meeting someone on the grounds of fanfiction, what else would you be doing?

90 Name: Charlotte : 2009-10-28 06:58 ID:g+OC1XOH

Why that is a brilliant idea.
I like your way of thinking.

91 Name: Namine-Artist : 2009-10-28 07:42 ID:LgVD2IFM

I really like this idea too. Although it is simple, it seems like a really effective way to get your fanfictions around easier and makes them look neater and more like a real book.

92 Name: Devious-wolf : 2009-10-28 07:52 ID:azzpBGa9

it's a great idea. usually with any fanfiction i make i tend to let my friends read them. i do usually make my own front covers too to make it look better. but in the end it looks like a play script -.-'

94 Name: Wintertitan : 2009-10-28 08:00 ID:uWZBEr5e

I beilieve this to be an amazing idea and what i've read and seen so far is that many people would really like to go ahead with it as well, however, it sounds to me like something like this could be hard to turn from idea into action. Something like this would not only need people interested in actually going (which it seems that this is already sorted) but someone to arrange and organise it. I think that everyone should give a little push to the person with the original idea to make it happen and also offer a helping hand =]

I think that it can be organized on this forum - someone just needs to say a date and time, and other people just need to agree, and it can happen, just like that.

True, but the easier way of doing it if find people who live near first

97 Name: Anonymous : 2009-10-28 08:18 ID:wBoyvyw5

>>96
Perhaps that could be done on this bulletin board.

98 Name: thejadefalcon : 2009-10-28 09:25 ID:VJc2HW5B

Yep, I've done this before (handing in some original fiction to a teacher and with a stolen picture from Command & Conquer Generals :P), but the general idea is the same.

The only two issues I can see are: what if you don't know how many people are coming and what if your fanfiction is really long. I've seen some chapters be over a hundred pages and my personal record (guessing here based on what I'd written compared to my plans (I never completed it before I cancelled the story)) would have been at least two hundred and forty pages. For one chapter. Yes, it's an extreme scenario but it can happen.

99 Name: Anonymous : 2009-10-28 10:51 ID:wBoyvyw5

>>98
Of course, you can then print only half of the chapter.

"what if you don't know how many people are coming and what if your fanfiction is really long"
I think that it would be okay as long as there are at least 3 or 4 people (any number greater than 2). It would be somewhat pointless if it were just a 2-people meeting.

100 Name: Anonymous : 2009-10-28 11:01 ID:wBoyvyw5

>>98
I meant to say, "you can then print out only the first few pages of the chapter."

101 Name: Xiaoqiaorocks : 2009-10-28 12:32 ID:dsgppfRd

That's a great idea. It helps the organisation of the meet up and if people were to add little extras to their cover page it would give character and make the story look more inviting.

102 Name: Kae : 2009-10-28 13:01 ID:VaM3NvWO

I'm apparently in the minority here but I find it a very strange idea.

Just a quick summary at the top of the page would be enough. That's all I'd need to decide if I wanted to read something

103 Name: Anonymous : 2009-10-28 13:14 ID:wBoyvyw5

>>102
Yes, a summary is definitely good, but it can't capture anyone's interests if they see the page as merely a blob of text. That's why books have covers.

104 Name: Kae : 2009-10-28 13:20 ID:VaM3NvWO

But I'm not writing a book. I'm writing fanfiction which for me is something I only ever intend to show online. I would not be going to meetings either.

105 Name: thejadefalcon : 2009-10-28 17:10 ID:ta3alqxV

A few pages wouldn't give a reader any chance to understand my stories. Take one I'm working on right now. Just introducing the main characters is taking twenty-odd pages.

106 Name: TearThePetals : 2009-10-28 19:34 ID:ejtKurkU

I think it's a good idea. With summaries on the top etc. I'm going to be really sad and admit that that would give me a weird sense of achievement, just having it printed off.

107 Name: Love Me Still : 2009-10-29 05:13 ID:m8iYFDu4

I like the idea of this, I think it's a great idea, although at the moment I've not written much but I'm in the process of writing something, but yeah I love the idea of this. Although my writing isn't very good so...but I would definitely like to do this.

108 Name: CastielxAngel-x : 2009-10-29 05:56 ID:vF5HLXgd

Well, I think it's a good idea, as I have a folder of all printed out fan fiction, all of which have a cover on it. :)

So yes the idea is good, as it allows people, if you have a clear title and maybe a quick summary on the cover, to gather about what your fan fiction is about before they even read into it.

109 Name: Iago96 : 2009-10-29 06:29 ID:68nkGcf4

I find I have to agree with Kae for the most part. While I find the idea interesting and believe that for some people it would work I wouldn't go to a meeting myself unless it was with people who shared an interest in the same genre I do, rather than just fanfiction in general. To be honest even then I might not go just because to discuss it aloud is really strange. But that is just me personally, you'll have to excuse me. I find typing easier, you can think about your responses more. I post online because it is anonymous - I've only ever met one person I've spoken to online in person. We're still really good friends now but I'm not sure it's something I'd try again.

Oh by the way, Yoshino. I've checked out the website. I love it. It's really good. I'll be keeping an eye on it.

110 Name: CarlieCullen : 2009-10-29 07:55 ID:bFiIduFz

I think that this is a good idea because I think meeting people with the same interests is a good thing. I for one would love to share my fanfics with other people!

Some of my friends/family etc don't understand the appeal of
writing fanfiction or anything so it would be nice to meet people who do find it interesting!

111 Name: BonEsFantastic (Emily) : 2009-10-29 08:55 ID:pYnDsUh9

115 Name: SPG : 2009-10-29 12:10 ID:1hqeauKY

I find when reading fanfiction, part of the appeal is reading it from the net. It feels more casual to me than printing out to carry around

116 Name: KyleG93 : 2009-10-29 16:05 ID:2DJNlnlp

It's a good idea for when we want to find something more easily. Most people will get their work mixed up and it saves us from having to look through everything to find one fanfic.

117 Name: TitanParadise : 2009-10-29 18:26 ID:jsVecA2T

Wonderful idea - especially for meetings. For some of my fanfictions - which I never seem to have time to write anymore, sadly - I have already made covers.

And talking as someone more into reading than writing, it would make things a lot easier if there were ever to be a bigger meeting. You'd know what you were looking for, and it would be so much easier to find the fics that you would enjoy reading. So maybe, rather than just title, it could be rating, 'ship (if there is one) and what 'verse (Potterverse, Twilightverse, Whoniverse and so on). You'd know what you liked and what you didn't and it would be a lot easier for everyone involved :D

118 Name: mikadzuki tsuki : 2009-10-30 06:19 ID:yNCQjETO

yeah it would really help people understand more about ff.net...but i never have anytime for ff.net coz of school and i don't know if there are any other ff.net authors living near me

119 Name: Raven_rain : 2009-10-30 06:51 ID:xunikYXz

wow, I think the idea of a front cover is excellent. It would help people at offline fan-meetings to identify what fanfiction other people are reading and make it easier for them to strike up a conversation and talk with others about it.

120 Name: Karina : 2009-10-30 08:36 ID:oHQ9KRQD

I'd love to do this, I'd probably draw mine myself personally, it would look cool. You could do posters too.

121 Name: zerofangirl : 2009-10-30 08:40 ID:wSh1oXZi

I agree with Raven_rain. I think it's a great idea. And it would be really cool to see what people did for their covers. I think the covers would atomatically make people more curious about the fanfiction

122 Name: DrGemini86 : 2009-10-31 11:00 ID:m0iy0L88

to be honest, I think it defeats the purpose a little, because most people write fan fiction on a computer because it saves paper, and you can correct things easily. It sounds like a nice idea though for sharing in a meeting. I'm definitely liking the front cover idea.

123 Name: LadyLady1995 : 2009-10-31 11:21 ID:nSmNCe7E

I like this idea. In fact, I have already done it with one of my own fanfictions.

124 Name: ggctuk : 2009-10-31 12:38 ID:CZM51aAR

I think it's a good idea for a finished product. I did attempt it once but abandoned it as I had made a few mistakes I needed to correct.

125 Name: xxxKinaMarie-Mosspeltxxx : 2009-10-31 12:45 ID:yk6RzCML

I really love this idea. Especially the Front Cover. More people should see what others do out there^^

126 Name: Kajos : 2009-10-31 13:17 ID:hlR6NtL/

I like this idea, i've dealt with printed out fanfics before and they are a nightmare to keep in order and separate from one another. That and a cover would do wonders just because it makes it that little bit more formal. Anyone can just put the title on the front and it just makes life easier when there are however many size twelve time new roman fonted sheaves of paper being handed round that and I would encourage headers! with title author and page numbers to keep the things together, i order and make sure they get back to their owner.

127 Name: Toffy : 2009-10-31 14:01 ID:yi4HoTrz

I think a front cover is a good idea and like the sound of only printing off a few chapters (I have one fic that is over 100 pages so far so that would be monstrous to carry let alone print!). I am, however, one of the many artistically inept people, but would like to venture forth an idea for those, who like me, find it difficult to draw - doll makes and character creation websites do exist, they may not be perfect, but they can be a good resource, as well as print screens if you have a life simulation game like the sims (which I do), then it's just a case of messing around in paint or (if you're much handier at that kind of thing than me) photoshop.

Hope that helps ;)

128 Name: Mistress Serethiel : 2009-10-31 15:03 ID:fz9Xa0hz

The front cover idea sounds good, it would be fun to have ago at creating professional artwork.

Maybe you could keeps the fanfics in binders, instead of loose sheets of paper.

129 Name: TheSoliloquy : 2009-10-31 17:06 ID:22ijcd6Z

It's a pretty good idea, and I agree with Mistress Serethiel. I'm forever losing sheets of loose paper :P
It'd be fun to draw a cover for my stories, it seems professional.

130 Name: Pondweed : 2009-11-01 05:19 ID:4XmF8o+t

I love the idea :) But maybe you could keep it in a folder ('cause I lose loose paper like it's confetti) and put the cover on the folder? instant recognition, and it doesn't get horrifically mucked up!

131 Name: Death1991 : 2009-11-01 11:21 ID:sgHMJ1EV

I think its a wonderful idea. When I completed my first fic, I printed it out and put it in a folder, and I'll dothe same when I finsh my next fic - its kind of a back up incase my computer breaks, or for what ever reason, I ever choose to close my account at FF.net (which i won't. ever.) Adding a front cover makes it feel a bit more professional.

So if we ever meet up it would be nice to have a printed, covered work, rather than just looking on someones laptop.

As for DrGemini86's point "I think it defeats the purpose a little, because most people write fan fiction on a computer because it saves paper, and you can correct things easily"
I don't think this is true, its probably because things are more easily shared online. And I can't imagine some one hand writing a long fic, can you? It's mainly convenience.

132 Name: Jay-La52 : 2009-11-01 11:22 ID:Sf9Ni66I

I think it's a great idea, because it immediately draws your attention to the fic and the subject matter.

133 Name: EvilWaffleS : 2009-11-01 11:26 ID:h5KSOD0p

I really love this idea, I'd love to print out my works and take them to a meeting. :D

134 Name: han8661 : 2009-11-01 11:36 ID:ewPF8bIO

Hey! This would be a great idea! It would really boost peoples confidence to take a fanfic to be read by other people plus i personaly think it would feal wonderful to have a proper version of your fanfic all nicely presented! :)

135 Name: Sakuri : 2009-11-01 11:45 ID:iAceoRQd

I imagine this would be very halpful during an offline meeting. I usually print out a cover when I share any of my works with friends, and it certainly does feel a lot more professional and even efficient. That said, printing out one of my complete stories would be hell, at over 200 pages. Someone mentioned printing out a few chapters and just presenting them with a front cover at one of these offline meetings. I think this is a great idea, as it makes a great 'teaser' of your work.

136 Name: RoseMMBlack : 2009-11-01 12:18 ID:cBaf8Wp9

Sounds good my friend, very good and formal!!!!!!!!!!!

137 Name: Imperial Mint : 2009-11-01 13:11 ID:cnCIBaSA

I think it's a good idea. It'll be nice to see a proper work, something you can hold in your hands and say 'Look what I did!' Plus I think we could unearth some secret artists this way as well, because we all know some people are amazing at writing AND drawing, the lucky things :)

I think the 'teaser' idea's great; you'd get to see a snippet of the story and then if you like it, read further into it :)

138 Name: RockyHorror11 : 2009-11-01 13:41 ID:NABoaI2k

Sounds good! Like, entwining fanart with fanfiction. Clever...

But I agree with the first few comments about binding the books. :)

139 Name: Twilight-obsessed-Betty : 2009-11-01 13:44 ID:sgySudy1

I think this is a very good idea. It's a very formal and professional way of setting things out. It would be good to put the work in a binder or some sort of holder for it so you don't lose the sheets of paper.
It could also boost the confidence of the writer/artist and help them improve their stories.

140 Name: IStalkKirby : 2009-11-01 13:54 ID:U9VQScqA

Such a good idea. I can already see C2s from FF.net becoming compilation books.

141 Name: AllTearsMustFall : 2009-11-01 14:01 ID:VXqhuCmF

A great idea and this would make everybody feel more professional personally and to other people, particularly those who don't really take fanfiction seriously. ^_^ I would enjoy sharing with others at offline meetings.

142 Name: Aaron Anderson : 2009-11-02 08:13 ID:rb/uwWhQ

This is a good idea, I think it would work well for compilations of stories. Giving a blurb or a small sneak peak of the story would be great also.

I always had the quiet dream to compile my works into one omnibus, give it a cover and backing, and illustrate scenes from the stories. This would really bring Fan-artists and Fan-writers together.
Unfortunately, I haven't wrote much to say really.

143 Name: Rhi.Scissorhands : 2009-11-02 09:20 ID:4UMeIZ0W

I think that it's a really great idea, it would make the fanfic seem more than just a fanfic, but a real story. And by just doing a teaser, it would give people the feel of a story without sitting for hours to read the whole story in one go.

144 Name: Jaydie : 2009-11-02 10:12 ID:JdPvM6ZY

I think that'd be cool, because as someone has already said, it would make the fanfic seem like a real story. And it'd be fun to design =)

145 Name: SarahJaneway : 2009-11-02 10:13 ID:0yT12/9n

It's fantastic idea. It would make its author proud and it would catch peoples eyes etc

146 Name: PrincessNala : 2009-11-02 10:43 ID:eFSOKGx6

I think this is a brilliant idea! It would also be a great way for fanfiction writers to swap and share their stories in proper story form and not just posted up on a website. :D

147 Name: Mikeru-D : 2009-11-02 10:58 ID:aWIVGNMn

I'd do it! It's a good excuse to spend (waste) time that could be used "productively"!

It sounds alright. I love making the front covers. I use the computer to make mine.

149 Name: X.Hallelujah.X : 2009-11-02 12:39 ID:ve2cLsHk

I think it's a good idea and I think a Summary would also help. When I choose a book it is the cover that attracts my attention and the blurb that convinces me to read it.

150 Name: MoogleAlert : 2009-11-02 14:04 ID:eFazr650

I think it's a good idea, that way you know who's fanfiction is which, and you get to add a cool cover to something that you've written. I love trying to make up cover art for anything original that I've written but I'm not much of an artist, so they all fall flat!

151 Name: TheAngelOfHope : 2009-11-02 14:12 ID:eK8qbvlE

155 Name: Death-of-Penguins : 2009-11-03 09:52 ID:4cSBDiYA

I like it. I know it makes me feel like I've accomplished more if I've got a cover for it and everything. Makes it seem special.

156 Name: RomanticVoltaire : 2009-11-03 09:59 ID:lI8Xp6Jj

Hi there, yeah I think it's a good idea. As others have stated, it maked fanfiction seem more serious and worth taking serious. I also like the thought of actually having my fanfiction "published" (well, or something like it) properly. It gives you personally a feeling of more recognition, doesn't it? :)
May I also suggest something though. As you told me, this website isn't only for fanfiction but also for fanart, isn't it? So if writers and artists got together through this website, even people who write really well but just can't draw to save their lives can have a really nice front cover made for them. It could become an easy and pleasant trade form - the artists draw front covers for the writers, and the writers do other favours for the artists (which will, in general, be a story dedicated just to them or something, we'll have to come up with something).
That's it from me, once again, I like it. Your idea, that is.

157 Name: Marionette Javert Edwards : 2009-11-03 11:29 ID:24oYE2Y6

I'd love to do that! I love making front covers for thins, and as others have said, it would make it look more official. RomanticVoltaire's idea is a pretty good idea too.

Writers could try writing an entirely different story for the same cover - it would be interesting to see a different interpretation of the same image, right?

159 Name: Bloff : 2009-11-03 14:48 ID:gcBM6GOl

I think that is a really good idea, it would help distinguise between each persons differant fanfiction. Even if they just put a picture of the fandom their fanfiction is for as the front cover. I think that would work. Or if someone loses one of their printed out fanfictions then it would be recognisable and quickly sorted, rather than it taking time to find out whose it is.

160 Name: ScaretRider : 2009-11-04 01:19 ID:ZG4iuUJp

Hey, this is a good idea, but it would prove difficult for those who have to hide their fanfiction from people in their immediate family.
However, for those who can do it, I say go for it!

162 Name: Deadly Nightshade : 2009-11-04 09:49 ID:1WyERsnM

I really like that idea. lol I'm kind of doing that now, I always print my fanfiction with a front cover so my friends can read it if they don't have internet access.

163 Name: Charmedcrazy : 2009-11-04 09:54 ID:sWhWDEUV

That's a really awesome idea. Don't know why I haven't thought of it before lol. The only disdvantage to printing the fanfiction out is that mine's always a bit long lol. So it'll cost a fortune in ink :D

You could, as the first post says, just print out the first few chapters.

It's a whole new take on things and i thik that it's a lot of good experience to share through visual and presesntable ways rather than just; oh here's a link, check it out.

I wouldn't mind trying that out when Ink and time allows it XD

167 Name: e-j99 : 2009-11-04 13:45 ID:d611BNBP

yeah i think it's a good idea :)
i agree with ScaretRider as well though.
I really like the idea of somebody having a picture and then people writing fanfics based on their interpretation of it!
My printers broken but i like the idea :)

168 Name: WinterQueen : 2009-11-04 13:56 ID:xsHhIwYK

It's a good idea as is ScaretRider's idea, it would be very interesting to see and if its just two or three chapters of the story then it gives people the chance to help each other by giving ideas and so on.

169 Name: Changgirl : 2009-11-04 14:15 ID:RkGxU6/M

I think that this is a good idea.
It would help people read things that they might not have read before, and broaden their reading choices. They could contain various one-shots, drabble and the best story that they have written - in their opinion. A hand picked booklet, to showcase the writers talent.
But yes, I agree with Charmedcrazy that the downside would be that it would cost a fortune in ink and paper!

I did this for a friend once I think - I wrote them a Harry/Draco fic cause they like that ship, then I drew a front cover for them cause I like drawing manga pictures! I haven't done this since, but it is fun!

I like that idea alot because on Fan Fition you can't put up your own story work it has to be based on ither something thats all ready out.

I do try to put front covers on my stories but I have only had time to do them for the main 3 I have done. 2 of which I can't put up on Fan fiction because like I said there my own stories. But I do write some based on Animes cause I love writing them based on two of my fav characters.

I think this is an excellent idea. It gives people a chance to be very creative and quite a lot of people that enjoy writing fan fiction also enjoy the design and graphical side of it too.

Good idea, I should hope to see this continue... let me know how it gets on!

I think this would be a excellent idea. It would make it so much more presentable and realistic. And the authors have a chance to get drawing and designing. Plus, it might give you more of an idea about the story and the characters. :]

I think this is a good idea, however may raise some copyright issues...maybe, I guess it depends how people tackle it. But I, myself, do create images for my fan fictions, as covers I suppose. So yeah, nice idea.

191 Name: MakeLoveNotSense : 2009-11-07 12:36 ID:OzT4ABj3

OK, I really like this idea. The copyright issue seems to me like a minor thing - I mean, it's not like we ask permission to use the characters in fanworks anyway. Also, I love the idea of fanfics being presented as an actual book (although that may be the wannabe author in me).

Thinking about it, this would actually be encouraging creativity - I'm not arty in the least, but I would definitely spend some time on it if it were a front cover for my writing... In fact, I might try this now. So it's inspired me, at any rate :)

192 Name: Yellow 14 : 2009-11-07 13:19 ID:GmxCPn2v

Sorry I'm late, I went to the wrong section originally. The trouble is, while it's easier to let people get away with using other peoples characters online, I should imagine that copyright would crack down on stuff that's printed out with a front cover. They may well argue that while ff.net and other sites are free, printed material is something else. And there's the issue of how many copies you bring to such a meeting. You could need dozens of copies, or only one. Sorry but it sounds like a legal and practical nightmare, no offence.

193 Name: Anonymous : 2009-11-07 13:38 ID:wBoyvyw5

You only get in trouble if a copyright holder sues you, and the chances of getting caught are pretty close to 0.

Also, printed material can also be free.

195 Name: FuriousFanny : 2009-11-07 13:51 ID:sTzR9jxj

I love this idea (and the general idea of meeting up in real life).

It's not the copyright thing that could be a problem, though. People who have written stories that are really quite long. Maybe they wouldn't want to print out the entire story if it really is long, and could just print out the first couple of chapters or something, to get people interested?

Otherwise, just choosing your shorter stories would be better XD

I love this idea too.

197 Name: Mangaluva : 2009-11-08 06:16 ID:FTW02LzA

I'd like to do this, but with the length of "When Pandora's Box Is Opened" It would take forever for me to print, and if I dared to sell it i'd have to charge a fortune just to break even on printing costs. I might do one copy to share around, though, if it takes less than a whole packet of printer paper XD

198 Name: jenanistonrockz : 2009-11-08 09:33 ID:5oWCvOcC

199 Name: Black Angel : 2009-11-08 15:28 ID:zY6aV746

This seems like a very nice idea, and the issues of copyright have already been brought up.
However, surely if people wanted to read your fiction they would have already done so online?
Also not everyone is going to be interested in the fandom that your write for. You could spend hours printing off your fic with a cover and it looks great but the group you meet up with might not be into that fandom.

A solution, of course, could be to only meet with others who share your fandoms. Or, to only meet to discuss the issues of fan based works and fan culture.

(I use the word you although I am not addressing anyone in particular.)

200 Name: Anonymous : 2009-11-08 15:42 ID:wBoyvyw5

Although they may not be interested in the fandom that you write for, they could still be interested in your fanfiction. After all, why can't fanfiction still be interesting even when the original fandom is not?

201 Name: Anonymous : 2009-11-08 15:45 ID:wBoyvyw5

Not a good idea: by doing this, it will most likely just turn into a meeting about the original fandom, rather than about fanfiction itself.

I can see your point.

"Not a good idea: by doing this, it will most likely just turn into a meeting about the original fandom, rather than about fanfiction itself."

Would this not be a good place to start when meeting new people. Discuss shared interests (fandoms) then move onto discussing fan-works/fan-culture in time. If people chose to of course.

203 Name: ScaretRider : 2009-11-09 01:17 ID:ZG4iuUJp

I agree with Furious Fanny. (Hi btw FF, I didn't know you'd been invited to this too!)

I also agree with Black Angel.

However, wouldn't it be better if you had people from mixed fandoms meeting up? Seeing as a fanfiction, may possibly, make an author interested in the fandom?

That's right - fanfiction could be a good way of exploring new things.

205 Name: Blue Demon : 2009-11-09 23:28 ID:gmoWZh7q

It's a good idea, perhaps just have the first 2 chapter's printed out for people to read (or 1 if it's a long chapter), I agree that the meetings should be mixed, however it depends on how many authors in the area are into certain fandoms.

I like the idea of using a front cover, especially if you also do fanart or have a friend who is a fan-artist. Kinda makes it sound more fun. I also agree with some in that this kind of meeting and the fan-fiction printed out for it could encourage others to be interested in other fandoms. Makes me kinda excited actually about fan-works meetings actually.

"Seeing as a fanfiction, may possibly, make an author interested in the fandom?"
It's true Ive become interested in a couple of shows because Ive first read a few fanfictions from that forum I think its a great way to introduce someone to something they normally don't watch(or read) or that had been cancelled or has finished airing.

209 Name: PrettiestFrogInThePond : 2009-11-11 09:56 ID:bWAc5qKr

I think it's an excellent idea. I'm not sure how copyright laws would apply, but as long as it's clearly labled 'fanfiction' and the author of the work in question doesn't mind, I don't se ehow it could be a problem. I think it would be a good way of sharing your work, getting feedback and maybe even introducing new people to your fandom.

210 Name: Anonymous : 2009-11-11 13:30 ID:ixFZ8Xd6

It is a good idea, to share fan-fictions in the form of a small 'book.' Integrating both interests (fiction and art) would allow the reader to visualize the content of the writing easier, and perhaps build an interest in a subject that they were otherwise reluctant to approach.

211 Name: Dark Wolf : 2009-11-11 13:48 ID:qw8j8gMa

I like the Idea.
Getting to meet others would prove beneficial in the long run. there are so many aspects that could be ventured, and just a general meeting to see what point others enjoyed and other areas they feel could have had more 'oomph' effect. like a editor, but more fan-like. With a general and genuine understanding

212 Name: Tez162 : 2009-11-11 15:25 ID:0JGnOHS8

I like this idea. If nothing else it shows we care for our works of fiction it make the printed version more user friendly and presentable. It is not something we messed about doing when we we bored one sunday, it just shows some care and effort. As for the idea of the meetings as a whole. There will be some fandom divides but we are all united in this thing we do: we write. Meetings can let us share appriciation for the fandom and for other people fan fictions, it can let us discuss ideas, get introduced to new fandoms amd improve our writing skills generally. They could bring a huge community that bit closer together. I mean think of what youtube gatherings, sci-fi gatherings and anime gatherings achieve...

213 Name: Guard of the Heradi : 2009-11-12 02:24 ID:Io89Ct+g

215 Name: Celena : 2009-11-12 08:14 ID:qE6Rp/uq

I think its a good idea, but I am inclined to point out that Blue Demon has brought an interesting question for me. What is the length that we're look at, for the stories?

Fan-art speaks for itself: you have art, the more the better.

Fan-fiction is a little more difficult. I would presume that there will only be a limited amount of time that we will all have, when we're meeting. Would bringing one small story or a sample of a long story be an option? It answers all the queries on: what if the story is a working process; given time and the number of writers and artists meeting, we can sample as many stories and art as we can (and when we want to finish a particular story that we've tried, then we have the details to find it on the net, at home, and read it in our own time - also extending the relationships between writers as they share comments and further ideas); there is also printing, how many of us are willing to print pages and pages (of an undoubtedly good story) but be unable to share them in its entirety, with everyone else (there are costs and trees to think about).

In saying all these and most of it probably doesn't make a lot of sense. I apologise for that this very instant. I do think the idea is fabulous and it has a lot of merits. I definitely love the front page plan.

216 Name: MaxOD : 2009-11-12 12:19 ID:l1fb01fl

I think it's a great idea to have a front cover and print out your fan fiction during meetings. Similar to the meetings themselves, it would get people more comfortable with each other, would be an easier way to bond with each other (similarities/ differences with each other's work, etc) and would be an easy method to give feedback.
I agree with Celena about the issue of sampling- if it's a work in process and not finished, details need to be given as to how you can access updates so they can read the fully finished edition.

217 Name: Buffy : 2009-11-12 12:22 ID:BOXagUi4

Hey, I think Celena has a really good point because most of us probably will have a limited time and we won't be able to show tons of things. I really love this idea and think it would be really cool to see some other people's interpretations of fiction in their own way, in art as well.

Indeed, I think that it might be important to somehow give out information on where they can be found online, in case people want to look more into the fanfiction.

219 Name: lieutenant Alia : 2009-11-13 10:26 ID:aLBoX6gv

Not a good idea...copyright is a big issue here. Maybe not makeing it look like a published copy and just something that wuld be seen as fanfic (no cover) would be a little better.

Hmmmmm but presenting it as fanfiction art is better. Draw the front cover yourself.

221 Name: Celena : 2009-11-13 11:18 ID:lGPvcV00

Well, there is always Disclaimers. Whether on the front page or the first page, you're officially disclaiming ownership to the canon and stating clearly that you are using the characters purely for 'recreational' interpretation.

That's what disclaimers are for.

I think that a cover is a good idea, but just be sure to put in a disclaimer, just like online. It will deffinatly bring proffesionalism into it.

224 Name: BlackFox12 : 2009-11-13 17:01 ID:6LcRZ2ZA

This is the one you said about, right? I don't think it's a problem to have front covers for the fan fiction, so long as it's clear that we're not intending to make money off them.

Also, that makes me think about all of the people who have mentioned webzines. I haven't seen any myself, but maybe it's something that could be started up again if enough people are interested?

225 Name: Anonymous : 2009-11-13 17:25 ID:2nj8/gxh

227 Name: LadyKnightOfHollyrrose : 2009-11-14 09:50 ID:W1+bB5au

I think it's a good idea - have the web address of where more of your fanworks can be found online so that if someone does want to read more they can easily do so... But I think that as long as the disclaimer is very clear it shouldn't be an issue (since no one will be making any money).

228 Name: Mangaluva : 2009-11-14 10:34 ID:WZO9XyqF

It might be better to hand out business-card type things with URLs to your fics or blogs or DA account or whatever. Easier to carry and less copyright fears.

229 Name: Anonymous : 2009-11-14 10:40 ID:wBoyvyw5

Perhaps it might be best to hand out both information about where it can be found online, and also a copy of it (with a front cover) so that people can see it first-hand at the meeting itself.

230 Name: Anonymous : 2009-11-14 10:45 ID:wBoyvyw5

>>228
I mean, after all, it is not too difficult to carry around if you print only a few pages. The url to the fanfiction can be written on the printed fanfiction - perhaps, "if you want to read the entire story, go here:" or something like that.

231 Name: Komodo Butterfly : 2009-11-14 10:55 ID:yEwJKB7L

What might be a good idea is printing the title, disclaimers etc onto coloured paper which would let you know the genre of the fiction. E.g. Green for adventure, red for romance, grey for general.

Putting your fics onto pendrives and showing them at the meetings on laptops might be a good idea. It's less to carry and you have everything you need.

But I like the idea of having them as if they're published works.

I soooo like this idea, it's almost like a society meeting for fanfictioneers.
:D
And Komodo_Butterfly, your coloured page idea is really interesting! I mean, there is a potter-based site called fanfictionalley that uses different colours to differentiate between genres, so I don't see why that idea couldn't be pinched in the general ff sense. I like it.
I'm defo's referring this forum

234 Name: Colinamilly : 2009-11-14 19:16 ID:FY0ikiux

I like this idea. i was so excited as i read the discussions. all the ideas are really great and they all depend on how you can manage them. for example, some people would rather have the work on a disc if they have printer problems or they find it easy that way. and some would rather have it printed with a front page so the work has the professional appeal to it and people would actually be more interested seeing as you have put in so much effort. for me i would rather have it printed out. (ofcourse just the first part).

I also like the idea of having the cover in colour to differentiant the genres. However some might not manage the coloured page. so why not just have some symbols (which can be printed off in colour if preferred) for each genre. you know, something like a logo on the front page. or just write the genre on the page.

235 Name: Bassair : 2009-11-16 10:07 ID:u1H8MD8v

(I finally found the post!)

I like the idea of covers on fanfiction which you share. In fact, I can honestly say I love the idea and have already made a couple of covers for my fanfiction.

I especially love the idea of trading fanfiction like a book club (I assume this is what you're saying...?)

236 Name: Anonymous : 2009-11-16 10:16 ID:EYAR8dFo

I think it would be best for the business card idea, because it may be hard to take on all the opinions of others face-to-face. If someone didn't like it at all and wanted to tell you that, virtually it's less hurtful.

237 Name: littledevildrummagirl : 2009-11-16 11:48 ID:z2QLqB6s

Possibly at a meeting it would be appropriate to print out the introduction of the fiction (as that's that part designed to hook others in) or perhaps an intriguing part of the story, like a particularly clever piece of dialogue or a really good action sequence.

A book club for fanfiction sounds good - after all, we shouldn't be confined by what we are fans of if the stories are good.

238 Name: haylz4000 : 2009-11-16 11:49 ID:xg3Bj6MS

I like this idea, and i like 'Komodo Butterfly's' idea of having different colours for different genres as some people prefer to stray away from certain themes.

But the idea of business-cards is good as well as some people probably won't want to start handing there work out and like the person above me said you may be more scared to share your true opinion on a piece of work face to face.

I think having a mix would be good so you can do what your are most comfortable with.

239 Name: Speckalln : 2009-11-16 11:51 ID:QEk0rIOP

I think that this is a really good idea. To be able to bring your fanfic to the meeting would make the whole thing better and i agree the cover would make it more recognisable.

240 Name: Beingless : 2009-11-16 11:56 ID:mpU3X/GR

241 Name: Lupa Dracolis : 2009-11-16 15:26 ID:EU2VaCbi

I'm liking the idea of printing it off with a cover, but I think the idea of symbols would be easier to manage, and it can be stuff you can find easily on clipart or google images or something. I suggest:
Adventure - a sword
Crime - gun
Drama - smiley mask/sad mask
Family - a family
Fantasy - unicorn?
Friendship - people holding hands
Humour - smiley face
Mystery - question mark
Romance - love heart (as opposed to the organ)
Sci-fi - UFO
Supernatural - ghost
Tragedy - teardrop/sad face

242 Name: PaddySnuffles : 2009-11-16 15:34 ID:l2tOc1BO

That's a great idea. It kind of sounds like having a bit of a book club with fanfiction instead of books... :)

To Lupa Dracolis' idea, it probably would be better than the colouring (although colour could always be a secondary system). After all, depending on the kind of printer someone uses it might only come out in black and white.

Also, having a small symbol in the corner leaves you with plenty of room to fill the rest of the front page with anything you want, which is especially good if you can draw at least some basic patterns to uniquely identify your fanficion, which pretty mcuh anyone should be able to do. Of course, if you know how to draw, or if you know anybody else who can draw for you, it can be even better.

I like this idea. There might be some copyright issues somewhere, but otherwise I think this would be awesome. (I'll probably wait until I've got somewhere near finishing my fanfictions before I print them out or anything... :S)

Plus, it's a lot easier to convey your general feelings in person rather in text- some reviews left on websites can seem harsher or more sugary than the reviewer actually intended. This way, improving writing is easier and more enjoyable :)

This is a good idea but I would never be able to do it. I have no printer at home (we don't print stuff so there is no point) and I don't have access to a printer because I don't work in an office or attend college/university.

This would cause a problem for me.

On the other hand, I can draw my own cover, that's no problem for me. It's just the printing off the first few chapters of my fanfic that worries me.

250 Name: Devil-may-care101 : 2009-11-17 11:09 ID:5pDwrRmj

I think this would be a very good idea, as it would be a way to distinguish fics from each others. Obviously, the title performs the same function, but then if there is a similar practise for types of fics (i.e. genre) or maybe even some small indicator of which fandom you're writing for, then it will be easier to differentiate stories and their authors from each other. I think to it would provide a chance for more impartial constructive criticsim - obviously you only come into contact with certain authors, or writing styles, or fandoms, usually by own choice, it will be able to help each other write more effectively and even a chance for more feedback of ideas. My only concern would be environmental costs - I'm not obsessed by it, but printings lots of pages would surely have some sort of detrimental cost on the enviroment. Maybe putting the fics and such on a memory stick to put on a computer, or audio recording would be better?

251 Name: Star-pidgeon : 2009-11-17 11:28 ID:6YmcKr/h

It would be a good idea. It would save time with the genre of the story and who it's about. It could be used to tell the difference between stories. It will make all stories unique

252 Name: Devonshire_Dumpling : 2009-11-17 11:45 ID:j9KUYMre

Yes, a very good idea. Would bring people closer together and help people find better fics

253 Name: NeophilesTheMetal : 2009-11-17 12:36 ID:cLKLlDzk

I agree with Star_pidgeon and Devonshire_Dumpling, I love this idea!

254 Name: Kivea : 2009-11-17 14:21 ID:hHzGUHgj

I think it's a good idea, first appearances can say a lot about something. It would also be fun to make, and easier to separate them by genre and other things

You could just print a few pages, or print a shorter story.

256 Name: ssspixiesss : 2009-11-17 19:29 ID:5RG6Vnbn

I think it sounds like a plan ;) and basically agree with everyone else ^^

257 Name: Mercedes92 : 2009-11-18 02:19 ID:vSqyWxif

Yeah, this sounds like a great idea, at like, every gathering you should take copies of your work and share them. It would cost me about a couple of quid to print them, but it goes to a good cause :D

258 Name: Brown And Blue : 2009-11-18 08:50 ID:yihRxhou

I like that idea, I think it can also help build the person's confidence up, if you know what I mean xp

259 Name: MrsJackHarkness : 2009-11-18 09:26 ID:PtugXCMj

this sounds amazing, cos i know that people write about so many different things and it would give people the chance to read new material.

260 Name: Zialicious : 2009-11-18 09:54 ID:itS9oEDE

Yeah that is a very good idea and if you cannot maybe do your own front cover you could get people who do fan art to do them for you

I like the sound of this idea too!

This IS a good Idea, but how do you mean print them out, How do we share them? over the Internet?anyway good idea:).

265 Name: Rosa_1991 : 2009-11-19 01:32 ID:F/7fQ01/

It's definitely a good idea since everyone is gathering because of their love for fan-fiction... so to not have a printed copy of their own fan-fiction, makes the gathering slightly empty, if you know what I mean... I'd say, go for it... and have fun wit it... this is what it's all about! Gathering up, meeting new people, making new friends and having fun...

Hey I'm Emily and I'm from Wales. I love this so much. It's a cool place. I've never seen one like this so well thought out. I love making fan-fictions and this looks like an amazing place to talk and meet new people

268 Name: shebaismydog : 2009-11-19 09:04 ID:TMiIqnT/

Nice! Very clever, I'm sure many people would appreciate being able to read a hard-copy of other people's Fanfic works.

269 Name: SparxFlame : 2009-11-19 10:22 ID:fUgwkJ6O

This sounds like a really good idea! Would definately be fun. And this website is awesome. Truly.

270 Name: Xylobones : 2009-11-19 13:07 ID:KnhE3QLz

I do like this idea a lot. It's nice to have something to go with a story other than lots more words, something that makes it seem a little more real, if you know what I mean.

271 Name: Deany-Bob101 : 2009-11-19 15:46 ID:gEtmULpj

Ohhh! I like that idea! Printing out your fanfic would be so cool! Almost like writing a book of your own! I like the idea of the meeting up-thing. It seems very well thought out.
I, unfortunetley, haven't picked up a real book in ages, so it would be nice to have a get together and read some stories but in book style. I think it sounds so cool to actually be able to take your book home afterwards as well, and you can get some feedback while you're there.
I like this idea a lot!
Lots of love,
Deany-Bob101

I think it's a good idea as well, although each of my fanfics takes me weeks to actually write it up but i would be willing to try the idea

276 Name: Starlyn Neoma : 2009-11-20 14:06 ID:vmaLWyyM

I think this is a very creative idea, espcially since I have thought about covers for my fanfiction before (mostly when I have writers block). I also think it might be a tiny bit harder for some people though if they find it hard to do things like this or if the struggle with art.

277 Name: Healer96 : 2009-11-20 14:44 ID:pB/z7Bgm

Epic idea really, nice chance for artists to show off and all that jazz ; )

280 Name: Venetian Shadow : 2009-11-21 08:06 ID:MADDmLgR

I'll definatley be having my work bound professionally when I've got the funds and put the spell checker over it. I think its a really lovely idea to have something you have worled hard on in a printed copy!!

281 Name: Screaming Faeries : 2009-11-21 10:48 ID:WPcLaGhE

I've spoken to you on Fanfiction about your previous ideas, and I think that your third idea is probably one of your best. Printing out fanfiction makes it look more professional, and drawing out/digitally making a front cover makes the fanfiction look more inviting and personal. If meetings ever occur, I look forward to attending if I can.

282 Name: Abbi : 2009-11-21 12:14 ID:TM8cgBwj

I think it's a great idea.
It should be on them like profile pictures, next to the name of each story. Creates a more attractive story and probably more people will read them.
You should take it to Fanfiction to see what they say :) x

283 Name: Paige : 2009-11-21 13:12 ID:2GjfSImx

I really love this idea, it links peoples Fanfiction and Fan art. Having your work printed off will give the writer and reader a more professional feel to the whole meeting.

284 Name: LilyAngelofChaos : 2009-11-21 16:10 ID:uxPVVrZI

I love this!! I can't draw, but oh well, I could always use a computer or ask a friend very nicely!! It would make this seem like an actual hobby where you meet people in real life and discus things as well as show them your stuff!!

285 Name: OhDearKeita : 2009-11-22 08:46 ID:oVminXWV

I like this idea, especially accommodating those who aren't brilliant drawers! And it can make a fanfiction seem a lot more sophisticated. When hearing the word FANfiction, i dont think people take it as seriously as it deserves to be taken and by making it look as close to a 'book' as possible only helps :)
It makes everything seem more serious!
Goo idea

286 Name: Largefish8 : 2009-11-22 09:07 ID:JWjkN3uT

Now thats a neat idea...would be quite cool to see your story, even unofficially, in print.

287 Name: Erytha : 2009-11-22 10:31 ID:3Z4tla9o

This is a good idea. We could get people collaborating as well. Some people are good at writing but dont know/ wont/ are unable to produce a cover for whatever reason. They can work together with other people who have more of an interest in that and they can produce covers to use for the printings of the fanfics.

We could even set up an exhibition.

288 Name: ElzBelz01 : 2009-11-22 10:47 ID:W3WoZTxu

I think this is a good idea.
It's a chance to promote both your own work and read other creations from the community.
I like the idea of collaborations (above comment), as well: it could be an opportunity to join both the fanfiction and fanart community together where we couldn't before: some great ideas!

289 Name: LithiumProductions : 2009-11-22 11:34 ID:ZRXg6aMs

Awesome! I like how you've planned it out and have taken every precaution, the site rules and I think you should get more people involved.

290 Name: Anonymous : 2009-11-22 11:52 ID:C7QiBfew

I think this is a good idea because it promotes your work and gives the impression of it without giving too much away.
I also like the idea of collaborations (comments 287/288)! Both fan-work worlds would benefit!

291 Name: BlazingStarz : 2009-11-22 12:48 ID:67lIgN4y

I've spoken to you on Fanfiction.net too and I thinks it's an awesome idea! I think it will get more people interested in your story if they have something visual. It would be good if we could ask the FF.net staff if they should set up something like uploading covers for the stories. It would make them more appealing to the readers.

292 Name: Murraymints999 : 2009-11-22 13:01 ID:2M4nWeu6

Yo,
this is a very nice idea, nothing like freshly printed paper and a pretty cover, really makes you feel like a job well done.

Hell, you could even get fan groups going that work together to put together a project like this.

You don't have to be able to draw to make a cover - you can use IT too :) also it would make the story feel like your story and to me it would bring them all to life :D

300 Name: Dranatic-Snitch : 2009-11-23 11:52 ID:5QwVqFHn

I think this is a nice idea, since I certainly prefer to read text on a page rather than on a monitor - it gives the whole 'bookish' element to the work. Also, there's the appeal of the 'offline' capabilities of this idea: I've frequently I've had a (admittedly weird) craving to re-read a really good fanfic that I've enjoyed only to have no net connection or to find that the story has been deleted or in the process of being rewritten or something similar. Plus, printing out the stories and handing them out is a good way for lesser-known writers to promote their work.

301 Name: Jennstarzzz : 2009-11-23 14:16 ID:IXaDseFk

Yeah I think it's a good idea, especially for people who are shy or not confident about their writing/drawing to be able to explain it properly. A title page would be good, maybe with a short introduction about the writing/art :)

302 Name: Cassiopee : 2009-11-24 04:39 ID:Nsy1/CpA

i think it is a really good idea :) and i very often print fics i like a lot so that i can reread it at times - and the front cover definitely makes a difference. It could also enable having both fanfic and fanart people working together :)
however, it is very very important that people clearly write a disclamer on the first page (not the cover) since printed work can be confusing and no one wants having problems...

another idea to have a souvenir of this event - it would be fab if every author attending the event would send a extract of there work so we could print a little magazine that would be both a tool of advertisement for author's work and something to bring back home. no more than a 1000 words approx with title, author's pseudo and fandom. Unfortunately those would have to be sold but - of course - not for profit!!!
what do you think!

303 Name: Roxie Rosie : 2009-11-24 11:19 ID:sSvmh8sx

Great idea although I think the front cover idea should be optional. I love the idea of everyone meeting and sharing their stories. I also like the magazine idea but am confused about how it will be published

304 Name: Indigo : 2009-11-24 11:22 ID:FU6dIDdc

This sounds like a good idea to bring a little more respect to fan fiction and art in general. After all, it's a sad fact of life that people do judge by appearances, so if you make your fics look more "Professional" They will be seen as more serious works.

And lets face it, even if writing fan fiction is purely about fun, it's still something important that the author puts a lot of work into. It deserves respect.

Plus, the option of your cover being nothing more than a blank page with the title on it means that those with no time, software, printer ink or artistic inclanation can join in too.

My only points would be: 1. Never forget the disclaimer. It's been said before but I'll say it again. Even if it's a one in a billion chance of you getting into trouble there's no point risking it when it's so simply remedied.
2. There should be some kind of accepted font/size. Not on the title pages but the actual printed fics.
3. Short drabbles should probably be printed in collections, there's no point having a title page attached to a sheet of paper less than half covered with words.

I'm not too certain about the magazine idea, I'm afraid I'm having trouble following. Would you mind sharing more detail?

305 Name: Samantha : 2009-11-24 12:22 ID:KdHxgwJJ

I really like this idea and think its fab, but like Indigo has indicated, you need to remember the disclamer, and no selling copies of it! No-one wants to get into trouble over it, :D

306 Name: HoneyBumbleBum : 2009-11-24 12:30 ID:Tzsbddi9

I do like this idea :D
Wouldn't it be like a script or something? :3

307 Name: HoneyBumbleBum : 2009-11-24 12:32 ID:Tzsbddi9

But as someone said before maybe it should be an optional thing :D

308 Name: ProperDaveXD001 : 2009-11-25 03:54 ID:exskHnux

Great idea! The advantage of hard copies is that you can read them when you have no internet, or during a power cut. Plus, there is the added advantage of circulating it to a wider audience, and maybe bringing more writers into the fold.

309 Name: gonna b famous : 2009-11-25 11:10 ID:novWQAYo

i think the idea is great also you could have more like fan art pictures in with your story to combine both elements of fan fiction and fan art

x

310 Name: Mint : 2009-11-25 15:50 ID:4WYcntTd

I like that idea actually. Fic-swaps would be a good way for people to branch out into other areas of fandom.

311 Name: MelMeikoMeiLing : 2009-11-25 20:55 ID:KLf+AeFf

I think it's a really good idea to help imprint the image in the brain for easier access that way.
And if one's printer is out of ink, like mine, then it would be a good alternative to draw a sketch or ink on a piece of paper. It can even be a scribble, as long as it's an easily remembered image.

312 Name: Wildegirl : 2009-11-26 11:25 ID:nW6rQBLT

I think it is a good idea. People could swap fics and then get ideas, they would also be able to talk to the author about what they liked instead of just leaving a post

313 Name: naioka1992 : 2009-11-26 11:40 ID:oEAqpuAC

I like the idea - on HPFF (harrypotterfanfiction.com) there's an 'banner' option - a picture that you can add to the summary, which really adds another dimension to a fanfic. It acts like a front cover, so I think it would be good fun to see what people come up with.

I think it's important that we don't forget the disclaimer, though, and ban any sales. That's the only real problem I can see from it.

314 Name: Rosie-Jess : 2009-11-26 15:57 ID:7IscMp0N

I like this idea, it's very clever! It could also help with recognising who each other are, if we contact each other before meeting!

You have quite a few good ideas, starting with this website!

315 Name: Saiyajin : 2009-11-27 05:22 ID:DDIx2nQS

Yeah I like it! Maybe if the fanfiction is really popular piece of work you could make copies lol! I know a lot of works out there that are really well loved that inspire fanart and fangatherings! I'd certainly support printing and sharing. :D

316 Name: Fae : 2009-11-27 09:45 ID:YRmhPbVE

I think this is a great idea to gve people a quick over view of what your work is about. It also gives people the chance to form new friendships with people who can draw well and could help them with covers in the future (something useful for any serious authors out there ;) )

317 Name: alphacadet0520 : 2009-11-27 10:14 ID:kdi0prBZ

I think its a great idea

318 Name: NekoSparky : 2009-11-27 10:23 ID:jg+jAJ1n

I think this is a great idea, it has an opputunity for authors to get feedback personally on their stories. Making them better and such.

319 Name: Yamiishot : 2009-11-27 10:36 ID:gNvqs7Ou

Not a bad idea, I like it!

yep, I like the idea too!

321 Name: Little0Plum : 2009-11-27 11:47 ID:vLH997Gk

I really like this idea.

It's useful for feedback (like NekoSparky said) and you would actually be able to speak face to face with other authors. I also think that it would be a good experience for writers to actually print out their work and just see it in a booklet form: it is an organized format and I can see people printing out their work so that they can keep them in book form as mementos.

322 Name: Emily : 2009-11-27 12:14 ID:ptNoIEUU

It does sound like a good idea - when i was younger (way little) i wrote a story (i was like 5 so it was rubbish) but i made a cool cover for it and everything - it would be interestng to do it again properly.

323 Name: MarieCullen : 2009-11-27 13:16 ID:nT0yC8Fz

I do think this is a really good idea. people could have lots of fun making front covers for their fan-fics

324 Name: Anonymous : 2009-11-27 13:54 ID:36D0xwka

This is a really good idea. It would be awesome to do that. You can get feedback about your stories and stuff, make new friends and just have a really good time. You could also get new ideas for stories and stuff and work together to make 1 great story, like everyone joining there unique talent in writing to make a fascinating story. That would be cool. It might be a bit dangerous though, to just meet new people. There would have to be something to make it safe, but other than that everything should be good. Front covers would be awesome. It could be fun. My friend is awesome at drawing so she could really help me.

325 Name: Lizzieleaf : 2009-11-27 13:54 ID:2RPPicTt

I think face-to-face meetings would be a great idea, as you could gain great feedback, and opinions, as well as meeting like-minded people.
I'd also really love making a front cover!

326 Name: Sassydemon : 2009-11-28 09:31 ID:LidFGeTL

Another good idea, and yes i think the actual forum is quite well constructed, and it might be good that you're not using logins as sometimes this deterrs people from talking(don't ask me why). A Front Cover would be quite good, it will encourage people to be creative and make them feel like they are more part of the community, and therefore more likely to go to the gatherings.

Hey awesome idea!!! :)

334 Name: Darth Zexar : 2009-11-28 15:27 ID:91HmE/fd

I believe this is a pretty good idea.

Other than the main faults to deter people (Possible ease for paedophilia or abduction), it is a really good idea, and a proper good way to meet new people, get better feedback, and also new story ideas.

Having a front page to have with you would be a pretty decent idea, as it would really be easier to see who's who, and allow everyone to see who is there for the fanfiction meeting in general.

During the meetings there could be an awards section, where everyone votes, and then there's a small prize. If not there could be a possible fanfiction organized awards (Someone would need to ask an administrator at fanfiction.net) to which everyone's travel is organized to a location in the corresponding country, so everyone would be able to get there and back home again afterwards. This could most likely not happen (Gotta be 1 in a million) but it would be fun meeting.

Darth Zexar

335 Name: Panda : 2009-11-28 16:43 ID:uyI79gFq

Yea, I like the idea.

Like Darth said, minus the possibilities of abduction and paedophilia, it's a good way to meet others that have the same intrest as yourself. Also, it's a good way to make new friends that are relitavely close by.

I like the idea of printing off your fanfiction as it would help improve things that others may have missed. Also, the front cover idea really does make it seem unique.

For most countries, there would have to be more than one meeting because of how spread out places are. For example, I live in Scotland, so if it was organised in London, I couldn't go. Also, if it was organised in somewhere like Aberdeen, I still wouldn't be able to make it, because it's still to far away. Glasgow, i would be able to make.

I'm not about to go read through 300+ posts to see if it's been mentioned before, but there's a nice option in lulu or createspace - they'll print out a proof copy that can have a cover on it; essentially a sample of your work as it would be in a book, bound, paged, and so on.

I may even know a way to sneak a free copy for unscrupulous individuals. =)

338 Name: FLUFFYTIGER : 2009-11-28 18:06 ID:NH1Xw1Md

I'd feel kinds weird handing out hard copies of my stories, but that's probably because I don't feel they are of high enough quality to be printed onto paper, to many mistakes and such. But it does sound nice to meet up and at least talk to other fan-writers about their work. We should all wear name tags with our FF author names, or your real names if you wish, just for fun.

339 Name: James : 2009-11-28 18:20 ID:S2Yafct2

Come to think of it, it would end up as pretty expensive to print out anything longer than a oneshot to hand out to a group. Sending it around as a .doc or something would probably be much easier - if not so nice to hold in your hands.

Nametagging would make it easy to spot who people are, although it would be best if any people meeting up knew one another beforehand and could recognize each other. The whole personal details / pictures/ etc terror of the internet pretty much kills that for a lot of people, though. Shame.

340 Name: Kiki Ling : 2009-11-29 04:09 ID:sqk64RW/

Hey there! Sorry it took so long for me to get back to you! It looks like this has really picked up, which is great! I think the cover for your fanfiction is a really good idea, another excuse for people to be really creative!
Kiki

341 Name: :) : 2009-11-29 04:59 ID:mYHCSCSj

I think the printing idea sounds good it would be nice to read peoples stories, if they are printed off they will seem all professional like

342 Name: Imperial Mint : 2009-11-29 05:44 ID:cnCIBaSA

I like it. It gives everyone a sense of something they've actually done, and able to hold something they've created (maybe not from scratch because, well, it's fanfiction) by themselves.

343 Name: summersocks : 2009-11-29 06:20 ID:7piZxLyE

It's a nice idea to be able to see something you've created, outside of a computer screen, in an actual book form. (kind of like g. norman lippert)

i like james' idea where you go on to lulu. it's pretty good that site. :)

344 Name: I.D.T.E. : 2009-11-29 10:00 ID:tOadz/G8

Yeah, sounds cool.

345 Name: Prosha : 2009-11-29 11:25 ID:Kr8xbsyd

I think it's a good idea.
But, I don't really feel that comfortable having hard copies of my stories... Mainly because They'd just be words.. Because I can't draw. Lol.
As for knowing who everyong is, name badges would be a good idea, screen names would be the best idea.. Mainly because then you know exactly who you are talking too.

346 Name: Tenshi-chan : 2009-11-29 13:26 ID:uwg+x/zf

I love that idea, i've already done it before. I'll print off chapter by chapter of my fanfiction and create a cover and take it into my school to show my friends each week - brining a new chapter each time.

It's helpful because they give feedback and i can also carry the fanfiction around with me anywhere so this is a great idea

347 Name: 777-DemonicYoshi-888 : 2009-11-29 14:35 ID:HH0USnF/

When I'm bored, I take my longer fanfics (I don't tend to update much on FFN anymore, so I have quite a few unpublished) and design front covers for them on Photoshop and the such.

So I'll probably be able to make one! It's an awesome idea... but my better fanfics are pretty long (100+ pages), so I don't know...

348 Name: TimelordEmoPhoenix : 2009-11-29 16:51 ID:ccttxRgq

There may be a problem with printing as people do occasionally have fanfictions longer than 10 pages maybe 20 . The front cover idea is quite clever though

349 Name: 777-DemonicYoshi-888 : 2009-11-29 18:13 ID:HH0USnF/

Crap! I meant 10, not 100 ^^"

350 Name: 777-DemonicYoshi-888 : 2009-11-29 18:19 ID:HH0USnF/

Wait, no I didn't... gah, I can't remember what I meant now anyways.

I think my longer fanfics (as in, the ones I work on day and night, that are on my USB stick so I can work on them at school and stuff) end up being about 40-50 pages, maybe even more... so either way, printing would be inconvenient.

Although I guess, as stated before, I could just print the first few chapters or so...

Or I could just print my short fanfics and my oneshots, I guess.

351 Name: MadHatter47 : 2009-11-30 14:57 ID:mi1l6JIL

I agree that it's a good idea for people to print fanfics - it makes them seem ore like books - but i can understand if people dont want to, long fanfics will no doubt take up alot or ink and time!

352 Name: Chloe xoxo : 2009-12-01 10:13 ID:YD5Y5nkn

This is a very good idea. it gives you a sense of accomplishment and that. Theyseem to be more real like they are there in your hand's and actually look like a real book!! Instad have having it saved to your Laptop. or MACCC!!!

353 Name: MemoryWish : 2009-12-01 10:34 ID:8zz7t++Q

It's a very nice idea. It gives a feeling finallity and proffesionality to fanfiction writers and that way each one can be easily recognised. If there are relevant images on the covers I think that there is a larger change that people interested in certain genre's will go for them. Very interesting. I like the way you think.

354 Name: charlie-becks : 2009-12-01 10:42 ID:oO0WpRVy

I think its a good idea, although if u have really long stories it could cost quite abit to print them off, i go into my college library its free there lol

355 Name: Elkkun : 2009-12-01 10:44 ID:8YN9Pe0Y

I like the idea, (yep I am here again).

I have...A few FF, one's got 10 chapters and they're all around about 1000 words on each page...(so that's like 10 lots of 1000 really).

For people who have bigger stories it would be hard for them to carry it around. Although you could always buy a folder of some sort so, it would be a lot easier. Plus if it rains they'll be more protected rather than if you just printed it out.......

Also you just lost the game.

356 Name: Cazzi : 2009-12-01 10:51 ID:epkswGdJ

i think its a awesome idea and would make it look alot better also it would make you want to read the story!

357 Name: Miss.R.T.T : 2009-12-01 10:59 ID:iNmT/QbU

I think it's a great idea, it would make the storys look more appealing to readers and many people would have fun designing and making their covers

358 Name: AryiaaBloodream : 2009-12-01 11:51 ID:5vkdgnAh

I think that the idea of having a front cover to a fan-fiction would be a good, it would give the story it's own identity and would make it more recognisable. A front cover with a story might also draw in an audience already interested in the show/movie/book that it's based on and maybe even others who aren't.

Printing out a what there is to the fan-fiction might be a pain to those who have longer stories, maybe instead of the whole thing those who have this problem could just print out the first couple of chapters so that those interested can look the story up and read the rest from there.

A front cover would give the feel that the author is serious about their story if they have gone through the effort of making one that looks appealing. It will also make it more distinguishable so that if someone enjoys the story and can't remember the title they can describe the cover and it can be found that way.

I think it would also give the author a chance to think more about features of the story if they were to see something involved in it on the front.

359 Name: CullenTwilightFan : 2009-12-01 13:02 ID:+AV/TFWw

I think the idea of a front cover for FanFictions is a great idea, it would mean more people would want to read it. Also it would show that FanFiction writers enjoy writing and take it seriously.

360 Name: Sofa : 2009-12-01 14:00 ID:nDiHYAQ6

Hey, its me.
I think its a good idea printing off your fanfic and fanart and anything else. Maybe one or two chapters for fanfic and a couple of the fanart, or bring in the orginal drawings, etc. For fanfic, you could make a cover or just print of a page with the title on it. I know these are probably someone elses ideas too, but I would go if i had the money and etc. If people were to give their fan-stuff. :D

361 Name: LyraHeart : 2009-12-01 14:09 ID:dBS0CTu9

I think this is a great idea :)

362 Name: swiftsilence : 2009-12-01 15:06 ID:J3t7OXD/

Its a great idea! It makes your fanfic uniquely your own and kind of gives the impreesion that its a book.

363 Name: Zaku-118 : 2009-12-01 16:32 ID:THeAVVaL

Hey, I'm kinnda new here but i think that's a really nice idea. for one thing it make's your fanfic look and feel more professional, and persoanally i prefer reading off paper than off a computer screen. I'm not sure why :)

364 Name: Harbinger of Doom : 2009-12-02 09:04 ID:rzHI1wgu

>>363 Thats because paper feels more authentic, and you can relax in your bed and read it :P

365 Name: Yami~ : 2009-12-02 09:05 ID:ZdvU8+1d

I think it's a really good idea. That way you can tell the difference between the stories, and I agree with Zaku-118 becuase it does seem more professional. I think it explores your creativity and makes it Unique.

366 Name: Fated To Pretend : 2009-12-02 14:47 ID:piTWz8Yn

thats an awesome idea, it would also help writes confidence i think if they get fedback face to face

367 Name: Kitkathampster : 2009-12-03 05:14 ID:dBkU9JSA

It's a really good idea, it opens a world not many people thought possible. Not only would you have fun desiging the cover but it would make it more appealing for the reader but it will giving fan writing a more real experience, something you can touch and feel.

368 Name: eeyop1428 : 2009-12-03 08:20 ID:8MJ6tzGw

I think this is a nice idea too, but also don't agree about printing costs to the detriment of the planet heh. But as one person has suggested we could just print out the first few pages of a chapter instead of all of it if it's quite long in length. I suggest reading the chapter/story online first and then when people meet up they can talk about their opinions of it instead of wasting paper, essentially.

Though the front cover design is a good idea (it's only one page after all hehe). The art work of a story can better show what it's all about and its meanings, making it deeper to the viewer. It would be cool if the front cover showed an action scene from the story or the characters in the story, something like that. I have images in my head for stories of my own but I'm not a good drawer unfortunately (I can't draw humans/humanoids! The anatomy is the hard part to master).

369 Name: willie the plaid jacket : 2009-12-03 10:33 ID:wake6wcP

I think this would not only make a fanfic more personal but also help the writer to get across more clearly what they envisioned in his/her head what the story is about, or how a particular scene looked to them when they were writing it if thats what they choose to put on the front.

370 Name: mrsw0nka : 2009-12-03 11:50 ID:s5vK7SsO

I think this is a really good idea. And personally I like to design covers for mine anyway, using photoshop or doodling when I'm bored. It'll be nice for it to be seen!

I would print mine at my college...for free... >.>

371 Name: giguise : 2009-12-03 14:06 ID:YemV/AbA

I think thats quite a cool idea. Though I'd probably waste loads of time designing it and then changing it multiple times, I'm quite indecisive :D And i'm pants at drawing, unless it's stick men

372 Name: siobhan : 2009-12-03 16:20 ID:PuKSnnmi

is there anyone living in the brightion area C:

373 Name: siobhan : 2009-12-03 16:25 ID:PuKSnnmi

i think this is a lovey idea ^^ i think the idea of a front cover is great after all, all types of media have some sort of cover on it. maazines, books, movies all have something to make it look more appealing

374 Name: Anonymous : 2009-12-03 16:55 ID:m4yAYZEH

I like this idea, although it's possible it would give those who can draw an advantage over those who can't, since their fics would look nicer. I'd like to think we're not all so shallow, though. ;)

375 Name: Renzokuken787 : 2009-12-04 08:44 ID:YPSED18F

its a good idea, but i think that the fanfic should be finished first because i know how frustrated people can get if a good fic isn't finished

376 Name: Blindfirekiller : 2009-12-04 09:12 ID:83tWPa9K

Really good idea! But some fics are quite long and it would cost alot if you had alot of fics. I agree with whoever said just a few chapters! the front cover idea is really good too! it's like with a real book it sort of gives you an idea of what a character might look like so it can be easier to imagine them doing whatever their doing (Not to be mean but I doubt it would work with a ffiction with sexual content =/!)

Alas some people (like myself) can't draw to save their lives=((
Luckily! I have a friend who does all my drawing for me though=D!

377 Name: FelicityGreyson : 2009-12-04 09:47 ID:Ez+3tCON

yeah, good idea. the only problem is getting everyone together, and actaully thinking about it. for example, one of my stories is fairly long ( it takes a couple of hours to read ) so that could be a bit tricky

ps there, i looked already!

378 Name: LittleSora10 : 2009-12-04 10:20 ID:tmPcyh5y

Good idea, most people should have access to free printing from their school, collage or local library. It will be hard getting everyone together. Since I'm still at school I don't even know if I would be allowed to go since I am young my mum probably would not agree as sad as that sounds. Also everyone talks about really long fanfics, would it be feasible to do it with short ones too? I have a collection of drabbles that I'm writing and it would be cool to see it printed off with pictures.

379 Name: AshXDawn4Ever : 2009-12-04 10:58 ID:IwHyLn5o

awesome idea :D your ideas are great!
and ok i'll tell everyone about this site :)

xxxx

380 Name: Amy : 2009-12-04 15:05 ID:GdsIRE7P

Love this idea. Although my front would probably turn out to be doodles that I've done in one of my many free periods at college. Well, that or cartoonised.

381 Name: EdwardsEvilAngel : 2009-12-04 15:28 ID:6c9fu9U/

Love it.I can't draw but it would be fun trying.lol

382 Name: Hoix : 2009-12-04 16:44 ID:NFje3UFB

I think that printing off fanfics is a great idea, providing that they are not too long as obviously, the more pages it is, the more it's going to cost to print.

I also think that front covers is a great idea as it could identify each individual fanfic to their author. If people cannot fidn artist, there is usually someone willing to help on deviantart.com, where you can commission artists as well as put up your own works.

383 Name: Annabel : 2009-12-05 10:39 ID:FkYKl8Lu

This is a really good idea - it lets people be creative and imaginative through art as well as writing. And if people don't like to draw, they could always make the cover on the computer.

384 Name: MoonlightWriter : 2009-12-05 10:47 ID:/6AXjo7h

Great idea(s) Annabel, and I agree that there's no need to be worried about your artwork because chances are there's someone out there that can't draw half as well as you can.

385 Name: APurpleAvacado : 2009-12-05 11:05 ID:g9DHko0t

Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. All of it really.

I think I cover would make it look more presentable, and if you only print of a couple of chapters, you can treat it as a preview of your fanfics. There's no sense in printing off the whole thing when it's online anyways.

If someone at the Offline Gathering is interested, you could put a link at the end (or on the cover) of your works so people can know where to find your fanfic on the internet, be it FF.net or Livejournal or whatever it may be.

Of course, in situations like that, it's a good idea to carry a pen... Thinking pose

386 Name: Jack : 2009-12-05 12:09 ID:fJ2kx4IQ

Good idea!!!

387 Name: ~chellybaby xo : 2009-12-05 12:34 ID:AIcqzI3F

After reading some of the comments on here, I agree that it would only really work if people's fanfictions were finished... but overall this is a very good idea, as it would mean that you could have an independent meeting without the need of the net :)

388 Name: Yuuki~Chi : 2009-12-05 13:38 ID:E4H2dmdc

Yeah, kinda exciting isn't it? It's like having a book read by other people and have reviews on them. Haha, random i know XD

389 Name: LordB : 2009-12-05 13:41 ID:tFKhc1h7

It seems most people think this is a good idea, and I have to say I agree with them.
XD

390 Name: Lorze the Brookes : 2009-12-05 13:59 ID:BZOcto8R

I certainly think that this is a good idea. People tend to be much better at remembering pictures and images than names, and a simple, iconic image which relates to your story would be really good to help remind people what you wrote :) I also think people should only print off a couple of their chapters - my main story at the minute is over 60,000 words and nowhere near complete, so that would eat quite a lot of trees :P But the overall idea is simple but effective :)

391 Name: Slavka13748 : 2009-12-05 14:20 ID:KR9TGfAK

This is a really cool idea - going to start work on my cover now! :D

392 Name: Shannon. : 2009-12-05 14:20 ID:IZy3FqFM

I think it's good to bring a printed copy of your fanfiction to show people and it would look a lot better if it had a front cover. It would seem more professional if we had a nice front cover, instead of just a pile of pages.

I like to design covers for my stories, sometimes, anyway. If you can't draw, just print out a picture or something.

And if the picture on the front was of a character or a scene or something that represented a part of the story then that would add an extra meaning to it.

Also, if it were being passed around, then it would help to identify yours. :)

393 Name: 666akatsuki : 2009-12-05 14:41 ID:MADDmLgR

The thought of a front cover is very much a highly good idea, plus then people can have a little fun creating it.

394 Name: lillith-hangman : 2009-12-05 14:55 ID:ZL8WHwS3

This idea is great - it would add extra charisma and possibly even draw people to it that perhaps wouldn't normally read it. Maybe people could also put a short synopsis on the front so that the general idea and fandom is made known? Nothing long - just as much as you would usually put in a summary. What d'you think?

395 Name: TimberOwls : 2009-12-06 12:06 ID:nEpMThCg

I actually really like this idea. I think it'd be really fun to design a cover for your fanfiction...plus, it's always nice to have your stories actually on paper :)

396 Name: MahuShards : 2009-12-06 12:14 ID:fleQq7Oj

I think this is a really good idea, it allows people to find out about you and to get to know you outside from FanFiction and not just as an author but as a person. It lets you see some of your work to that you've done :)

397 Name: c.j scarlett : 2009-12-06 12:18 ID:eGgqxwQM

This is a fantastic idea, it would be great to see the front cover of the stories your writing.

398 Name: HD : 2009-12-06 13:25 ID:uTqknm7d

I think this is a pretty good idea :) If you can get together some people for a couple of test meetings and it all works out then I say go for it. (this is Afroza-IX from FanFiction btw)

399 Name: Arcane : 2009-12-06 13:29 ID:MADDmLgR

I think this sounds like a good and exciting idea, it adds more to fanfiction and would also allow people to convey what their story was about through art and not just through a blurb. Also, if the cover was to do with the story it would probably make it easier for people to find the type of story they want.

400 Name: Espeonsilverfire2 : 2009-12-06 14:26 ID:NwmcAlYV

I think that is a good idea. Personally, although I've never been to such a meeting, I like to design covers for my fanfics, and occasionally I print them off and bind them as books for my shelf. It does add an extra personal touch to a work.

401 Name: mizar and alcor : 2009-12-06 15:40 ID:gqfuXZJ8

403 Name: Fenrisulfr : 2009-12-06 20:14 ID:aQIymMlP

i like this idea- it gives you the chance to play around with, your work and giving it more of a flair

404 Name: nakceb : 2009-12-07 14:58 ID:12a586wX

I think it's a good idea as it brings together fanfiction and fanart and, if done well, would give a good visual representation of the story and make it more interesting.

405 Name: Stephj789 : 2009-12-07 15:41 ID:Qu+YWAI8

I personally think this is a fantastic idea! I love to draw the characters I write about and also I love writing my fanfics! This would create a perfect balance between my fanart and fanfics! If anyone near swindon were to hold a meeting/ try to arrange a meeting I know a few people who would definitly be interested including myself!

Stephj789 is my name on fanfiction.net

406 Name: Caty-Cross : 2009-12-07 17:12 ID:jMYqqPHY

This is a really good idea! I'm not very good at drawing but i could give it a go! Anyone from South West Scotland around??

407 Name: Emelethaine : 2009-12-07 21:12 ID:biVmav/T

I think that's a great idea! I have basic drawing skills, I think I'll try it.

I personally suck at drawing but I have a mate who can help me out :D I like this idea... makes the writing just THAT bit more personal...

409 Name: Myrak : 2009-12-08 10:18 ID:+c6A6dIA

This is definitely a good idea. I'm not good at drawing, but my best friend is a natural at art so I could get her to do it for me.

410 Name: Zee : 2009-12-08 10:59 ID:2/vdEq5D

Seriously good idea! I'm studying to be an art student so I'd love to do it, and share my stories with others too

411 Name: S.G : 2009-12-08 11:14 ID:eOsQE5tP

I think that this is a great idea. it makes the work seem more real if you have a phsical copy rather than just one to look at on a computer screen :D

412 Name: DCFC11 : 2009-12-08 11:43 ID:7RgEthEA

Very good site, and good that it lets people say where and wen they would love to meet, also i love to draw so that is greeeaaat! :D ^.^

413 Name: Rose-Petal-Falling : 2009-12-08 11:52 ID:IVwjlnTX

I think this is a very good idea, although care should be taken in picking fanfictions. Some fanfictions may offend a person you show them to.
Also early on in the thread it was mentioned about copy-writing, this would not be a problem as if it is able to be read on the internet ot should be fine to be read off paper.

414 Name: -x-twilight-addicts-x- : 2009-12-08 12:02 ID:wxdCxU+f

AMAZINGG IDEA! i love this one, you should be proud =D! it brings a good balance between personal and professional and fanfic and fanart!

415 Name: vamipre-princess-liracia : 2009-12-08 12:04 ID:bga/dVHO

i have been talking to you via fanfiction i believe the frontpage idea is a brilliant way of showing that you have thought about how to present your work, with or with out a drawing (or design} on the front, it may also be a good idea to use a pen name instead of your rea name

416 Name: kez : 2009-12-08 12:07 ID:FgEU+hpp

so wait.... when we meet up we will just be sharing fanfics and stuff? im not sure why we are printing them and stuff?

417 Name: -x-twilight-addicts-x- : 2009-12-08 12:18 ID:wxdCxU+f

pen names are good (respecting privicy)
416 --> printing them means you can share your work with others without an internet connection and it makes it more 'special' hope this is helpful =D

418 Name: Juubi Karakuchi : 2009-12-08 12:33 ID:1tD60Irj

A good idea. It would be worthwhile in an offline meeting, and convenient for those without an internet connection.

I think this is a good idea, it will also help promote your fanfiction.

I've just been talking to you over fanfiction [eye.of.the.kyuubi] and i think the idea of a front cover is good idea. It'll help people spread their idea etc. a lot more easily!

422 Name: Katie : 2009-12-09 14:12 ID:gtaNaUoF

I think this is a great idea too.
It would give people a chance to give feedback in person and freely talk about their fanfiction. :)

Hmm, seems sensible.

424 Name: Darksword512 : 2009-12-10 11:10 ID:C+Se/7V5

Good idea, but not everyone has access to printers or sit through printing 50+ pages, even if it's just one chapter that's being printed (surely that would be tree genocide?!). Maybe using memory sticks or something would be more practical.

425 Name: VendettaX : 2009-12-10 11:58 ID:O3tkiC3U

I agree with Darksword512, it is a very good idea but perhaps not very practical in the long run. For small gatherings it may be fine to print out a few pages per person, for larger gatherings and larger stories it may not work so well.

However, it is entirely up to the person involved. For me, i would feel that I would want to print the whole story for most of the people there (especially if I were uptting a front cover on it etc).

426 Name: Mrs I Northman : 2009-12-10 13:29 ID:WljIz2Ho

I like this idea, it would make the fanfiction seem more like a book. A lot of people put a lot of time and effort into their stories after all :)

427 Name: Gaaleex : 2009-12-10 13:49 ID:w1I8PvDG

I think this is a brilliant idea. It would definitely advertise your fan fictions more, and make them like books. Perhaps even another page at the back, with a blurb describing what the fan fiction is about? For example, for a fan fiction I have wrote, on the back would be the title, what I am fan writing about, in my case Naruto, then a description of the story. Therefore someone would pick up the copy, and know what it was about and such.

428 Name: E-chu : 2009-12-10 13:51 ID:5CcfsDb7

It's definitely a good idea - after all, the fanfiction is a central part of a fanfiction-gathering.

What would be even more awesome - and totally impractical for the vast majority of people - would be to use one of those binder-machine things that put a plastic spiral spine thing on paper... you can probably tell why I don't work in one of those jobs where having to know the right words for technical stuff is important. I think I should just give up speaking there.

Interestingly, I do know people who print off fanfiction to read rather than reading on-screen, though I think that's for practical internet connection reasons.

And far more to the point than the rest of this rambling post, covers do make stories look good. ^_^

429 Name: E-chu : 2009-12-10 13:55 ID:5CcfsDb7

In response to Gaaleex: Yes, a blurb would be a brilliant idea, especially for larger gatherings. It would also be good to put a rating on it (U, Pg-13, M, etc.) which would fit neatly on the back. Oh and any pairings too - the sort of stuff people might want to know before they read.

431 Name: Squinky-Cullen : 2009-12-11 10:40 ID:MADDmLgR

Great idea and having a blurb aswel.
Blurb is a funny word
It would make the word more attractive and more people might wanna read

432 Name: Misa : 2009-12-11 11:04 ID:H2fd1XY8

I'm kind of mixed on this idea.. I mean... I think it would be better as someone suggested, to use memory stick or something, because 1) A lot of paper could be wasted
2) some people dont have access to printers
So it'd be kinda.. diffficult, and cause some unfairnss perhaps?

Blurb... I ways thought that's an awesome word. Bluuurrrrbbb... Weird.

433 Name: RoseandThorns : 2009-12-11 11:13 ID:7V0GnL37

It's a really nice idea and if a story is too long we could just print the first few chapeters or use shorter stories to give everyone an idea of how we write

434 Name: bubblegirl89236 : 2009-12-11 12:07 ID:oZL7YSg6

i think it is an excellent idea, infact i already do this so if my work is ever lost, i have a hard copy under my bed and i find it nice to see all my work on paper (double sided of course) as it shows how much work i have done and makes me feel a sence of pride, since i hide all my work from people i know.

435 Name: bubblegirl89236 : 2009-12-11 12:12 ID:oZL7YSg6

oh and for the offline meetings you could bring a laptop, send them a copy or just pass it around (so you only need one).
And you can always recycle your paper after.

The covers are a must, they make it look neat, can give quick info, like the author, even the summary or rating you could stick on there too.

436 Name: Lerryn x : 2009-12-11 12:27 ID:cihiW273

I think this sounds like a really good idea actually! It definitely would make the story more recognisable, as whenever someone tells me a book title, I'm sure we all immediately imagine the cover! :)
The summary, rating, author name and everything should be a must to add too, it would help the fanfiction author get noticed more! The only problem I have with this is that the cover could easily be taken off and unforuntately some people may show this to others and claim it as their own, so maybe a copyright sign or a sort of watermark would also be neccessary! ^_^

-Lerryn

437 Name: Lady Rowann Redfern : 2009-12-11 12:47 ID:PypbXVlg

This would be a very good Idea, it would give the Story/One-shots/poems/etc. a professional look to them, which would also make them more appealing to the people who would be reading it.

If the author is unable to print their story off, how about putting them all on a Memory stick, and maybe using a single network of computers, so that the readers could take a look at it.

438 Name: Anonymous : 2009-12-11 12:57 ID:CvT7VI0L

That's a good idea, especially if stories on memory sticks were on a single network, you could create a sort of library of fanfictions. That, of course, means that you could have a section for reviews, some could be anonymous of course, but the principal is good.

439 Name: teknomancer2008 : 2009-12-11 12:57 ID:9/TpYF+2

i suggest the covers do not HAVE to be fancy, just basic and simple, in fact, the simpler the better for most people, as many do not have access to great artwork. the network of computers is a good idea, but would have to be worked out in advance, as some do not have a good understanding of the types of security precautions needed on different types of computers. this could prove problematic (for instance, i have a certain area of expertise on windows, but have no idea about linux, or others like macs, for example.) if the stories are to be made available on memory sticks, then it might be an idea to suggest that everybody use a specific standard of document to make it easier for people to work from. what do you guys think about these thoughts, guys?

440 Name: Mapleleaf07 : 2009-12-11 13:59 ID:FAxeuh9A

This sounds like a good idea. To actually be able to see someone's fic in real life would be brilliant. I also agree with the memory stick idea; it would save alot of paper and indeed the ink that printers need. It would be a good idea for the people that ARE allowed to meet up, but alot of the people who reply to this site may well be young teens, like myself, with over protective parents that are scared of 'internet people'.
Still, it's a good idea ;)

441 Name: Anonymous : 2009-12-11 14:42 ID:fM6/nWT2

It is a great idea! Having a hard copy of the story would work if computers were not available, and it may only need to be the first few chapters or so, perhaps a summary on the back. Having them networked might be harder to set up. (not out ruled though!)

Covers would be good. :) (Basically agree with Lerryn!)

442 Name: Emma : 2009-12-11 15:25 ID:Xf7FYzmc

Great idea, when people decide to meet somewhere in a gathering it would be a way of identification proving they are from the same group.

443 Name: Lili : 2009-12-11 16:08 ID:pVtAfXiU

I like this idea, especially as I do a lot of art myself :)

444 Name: teknomancer2008 : 2009-12-12 03:16 ID:9/TpYF+2

i do agree with emma, and forget to put that in my previous post! thanks for mentioning it, also, it will help people to identify the writer. of couse, you could just be the reader...

451 Name: Loz-ox : 2009-12-14 10:14 ID:17LS8rOg

Hey, I'm the girl off of fanfiction! This idea is really good! I think combining writing with a piece of art work would be wonderful. It'd make it look more presentable and professional. I'd be happy to do that :D

452 Name: AnyaSamara93 : 2009-12-14 10:42 ID:xONt9cHl

I think it's a great idea. Admittedly drawing isn't my best talent, but for those who are better at drawing than writing, it's a great way for them to get involved.

453 Name: Keitorin12 : 2009-12-14 12:17 ID:LcbgWKKh

I think this is a very good idea i like drawing so it would be quite fun

454 Name: RobynREN : 2009-12-14 12:21 ID:6ek7Pua8

I think that this is a brilliant idea. Not only would it create more traffic within the fanfiction society, it could also get anyones own fiction more well known, if they are being handed around, and talked about.

This website, i'd also like to add, is brilliant. It seems there are alot of people on here allready, and i look forward to looking around.

455 Name: J A : 2009-12-14 12:42 ID:Wzg6MMn5

Yep, a great a idea all round.

I have to agree with Loz-ox, it's more professional.

457 Name: SweetHersheyKisses : 2009-12-14 13:08 ID:mRhvo1qi

I think this is a brilliant idea, its a way to become noticed and to share the fan fiction with other people. Maybe people who like to read 'fan fict' don't have computer access, printing them out would certainly provide them with the chance to read other great stories out their too. It also shows the potential fan-fict writers have :) ... Love this idea greatly! :]

458 Name: Vicky : 2009-12-14 13:15 ID:nqH2tNer

I think its an excellant idea. As SweetHersheyKisses has already said it is a great way to get noticed.
I also believe that it is a great way for people to broaden their reading and discover new stories. :) Its marvelous

459 Name: Elliebear : 2009-12-14 14:43 ID:CSfGY56M

I don't really write fan-fic but i love doing fan-art, i think its quite a good idea, having a front cover would make people more interested in reading the fan-fic.

I think that if people know someone who does fan-art but can't really do it themselves, its good way to get them involved with it too.

460 Name: PoisonedRazorBlades : 2009-12-15 10:26 ID:3+kg+5GS

I think it would be a great idea! c:

462 Name: Laura Mae : 2009-12-15 13:31 ID:FAmKiKm2

good idea! that way we can also practice fanart!

464 Name: Junki : 2009-12-16 09:40 ID:vKz4LdHb

Hey it's Junki from FF.Net, another brilliant idea from you Yoshino. I think it's a good idea. If people wish to share their printed fanfiction -like in a book of short stories- or fanart -like a portfolio or art book- then they should be able to, but for those who can't or don't wish to then a links page is a good idea for people to hand out too, for advertising purposes maybe?

465 Name: XImmyX : 2009-12-16 10:20 ID:TkyppFws

Really good idea. I will do this from now on but I mostly write my fanfics on the computer for Fanfiction.net. I guess i could always draw the front cover on paint or photoshop.

Really good idea.

  • XImmyX

466 Name: izzie : 2009-12-16 11:03 ID:BCu7d+Mb

Hey i feel that this is a great idea as it not only makes fan fiction more accessible to mroe people but instead of looking like a piece of text it is more similar to a book. It also allows people to read each others fan ficts at the meetings

467 Name: Dave2380 : 2009-12-17 06:08 ID:pUC8Eh5+

It's a good idea, now if i only had any artistic talent it'd be a brilliant idea. Good site Yoshino.

468 Name: Swashbuckling-Panache : 2009-12-17 11:44 ID:yXe8G9M/

This sounds like a good idea because then people feel like their fanwork is more real, and their own. It would be fun to design your own cover and you could make it unique.

469 Name: Lone_Wolf9145 : 2009-12-17 12:25 ID:/Sfd5qXf

I think it's a great idea, it gives the writer a little more individuality and makes it easier to tell their fanfiction apart from the rest.

470 Name: Sabulana : 2009-12-17 15:08 ID:hT71jYNd

I think that's a good idea. I don't have much talent with drawing for a front cover but I'm sure can come up with something.

471 Name: Purple_Panda : 2009-12-17 15:10 ID:RbW3aSPB

This is actually a good idea. It's also good for those who like fanart who can use their skills for their front cover as well as presenting their fanfiction

472 Name: BloodWhiteWolf : 2009-12-17 15:18 ID:VrXMgKWx

Yeah, I agree, printing off you're work with a unique cover would be a great idea. I'd love to design my own front covers for my fictions.

I know most of my friends and I prefer to have a paper copy of a story to reading it on the computer, so it will appeal to us more; having something we can take around with us and discreetly read in lessons ;)

Really good idea - I like!

X

473 Name: vuarapuung : 2009-12-17 18:14 ID:qwUGV+ug

Hey, seems like a good idea. It would be really cool to see your work almost like a book, and makes it a lot easier for people to remember your work as well. I think a couple of writers who posted their stories as pdfs and such may have done this before and it works, makes the document look a bit more striking.

474 Name: Lauraac2110 : 2009-12-18 09:58 ID:SO9Z8OCC

I'll certainly do this if I ever do meet up with anyone.

fanfic front covers here we (i) come!

Yeah, i really like this idea :P

476 Name: Anonymous : 2009-12-18 12:32 ID:msDWbzqf

Hey,
In reply to Yoshino's message on FanFiction.net, I think this is an amazing idea.
Fanfiction does not get enough attention and there are some absolutely fabulous stories out there that are even better than the original.
Plus the idea of a front cover to present it can get more creative juices flowing for everyone attending if they wish get arty and create one.
Just one question, does everyone that go have to bring some fanfiction or can they just go and see others...
Personally, I started to write but at the moment I find it more interesting to comment and review others.
So yeah.... Great idea! :)

477 Name: Kaname-Momomi-Stalker : 2009-12-18 12:51 ID:eHAA6VNL

Your site is very good, better than my little one.

Brilliant idea, would really be special to see there story with a cover almost 'Official'
And then showing it to people who will actually care and give honest feedback!!!
c:

479 Name: Anonymous : 2009-12-18 14:41 ID:qKcjfZXm

I think that this is a great idea and would be amazing to help people share their ideas. The front covers will also make it look better, more professional and possibly morefun.

480 Name: Wait, What? : 2009-12-20 05:11 ID:Pbhb0x6P

Brilliant! I think this'll be a really good chance for people to show others their work and skills, especially those who love drawing their fanart, own characters, etc. Also, it'll provide a means for those who have the exact image of their characters to take form, and allow people who read the story to get an accurate imagining in their heads-YAY!
Maybe I'll have a go with my original story (ahem, So Vampires Aren't All That Overrated), considering that's the one I've gotten furthest at typing up. I've already half-heartedly tried to create a cover (well, ish. It never really got finished.) so I'll try incorporating what I've already done into a new one.

Another thing I'll add, too, is about a possible job market. If sombody does a totally awesome/epic/brilliant, etc piece of work for their cover, then perhaps other people may ask (even pay-Oh my wow) for commissions.

481 Name: Muffinanarchy : 2009-12-20 10:00 ID:+hXsVo6R

I think this is a good idea. (: It'll be great for people to express themselves not only in composing the actual fanfiction, but to make their characters come to life by their own hand. I've already done a lot of this for my characters, and I'd like to see other people's art for their fictions.
Nice idea (:

482 Name: Tears : 2009-12-20 12:38 ID:as0F8BYM

In response to Yoshino's PM on FFN, this is a great idea in my opinion! I personally have done this before for friends who wanted to read it - it makes it a lot easier to organise and makes it look more appealing (and it's less likely to be read by people snooping in your room if they can see roughly what it is straight off). It can drum up interest that might not have been there before because the cover is much more pleasing to the eye than the harsh black-and-white print of the first chapter straight off.

483 Name: Unique Cullen : 2009-12-21 05:22 ID:5HM4toAR

this is an amazing idea, it can bring in more people to read fanfictions and it shows off artistic designs to show flamers that people arn't useless

484 Name: Cat : 2009-12-21 06:34 ID:Al34gTwO

wow this is a long thread...
Love the idea; no matter what you say everyone still ends up judging a book by its cover I suppose.
Whole stories would definately take up too much paper and ink but maybe people could use one-shots? Then the other people at the meeting can see whose writing style they like and look them up.

485 Name: moonlit severus : 2009-12-21 10:23 ID:KOowzaZb

In response to Yoshino's PM on fanfiction.net I think this is a really good idea. Not only does it allow people's stories to look more professional, but it also makes it a lot easier when sharing them with other people. :) And it also covers everybody-those with artistic talents and those without. So yes a very good idea. :D

486 Name: xkidscanflyx : 2009-12-21 10:53 ID:bLnKjwSC

I think its a good idea and would be really fun but should be up to the individual person and for some fics that are really long it might be a bit harder to print out the whole story so maybe one or two chapters or something? But I like the general idea as it another way try and express yourself :)

487 Name: .Cullens.The.Pack.And.Me.Love. : 2009-12-21 11:01 ID:xONuu5SL

I think it's a good idea but obviously depending on the length of the fic it might be easier to take extracts or your shorter fics. You might be most proud of the longest ones but it might be too much to print so it might be better maybe to take a collection of one shots or some of your shorter fics. It would depend on the person really although I agree they should all have covers.

488 Name: AnimeBanana : 2009-12-21 11:58 ID:8Z89Hur2

I also think its a good idea it gives the chance to people who aint well known to let people know who good they are. If their fic's too long to print out just print out some of them

489 Name: KaseyKC : 2009-12-21 12:32 ID:ZeDBfcBx

I think it would be a good idea, it would enable people to show others their fics and such as hardcopies - which are always considered easier to read than a jumble of letters on a screen.
Only one problem - you would have the only problem of if you 'lost' your fic copy and someone perhaps found it and either never returned it to you or could not return it to you if you stopped going to meetings.... but that's me being negative. I'll stop that now. :P

490 Name: Sbett : 2009-12-21 13:05 ID:4ZLAfkz1

I think this is a really good idea. It can show people's fan-art and fan-fiction at the same time. But, if the fic is to long, the writer could chose the best chapter (or chapters), in their opinion, to print out.

491 Name: MimzSilver : 2009-12-21 13:15 ID:xB0bDHnX

I like that idea because then people could show both thier skills together rather than putting the writing up on the internet in one place and the drawings on another. I like the advertising idea behind it too. Looking at small extracts from other people fics and then reading them at a later date, it will boost the amount of vies and the author can also talk to the readers properly, instead of through comments where its can be hard to put a point across properly.

^.^

492 Name: The Earths Lost Soul : 2009-12-21 13:22 ID:VHP6chF3

Great idea, Not done this before because of the price of ink but might be able to do this in the future if people want to read my fan fics and give me feedback in person.

493 Name: LittleFate : 2009-12-21 15:31 ID:+aoSj1Ed

It's a great idea - much like mentioned previously. I also find it is much easier to read text when I have it in my hands than if I'm looking at a blinking monitor.

I'm just slow on updating my actual hardware - however I don't actually have a working printer at the moment. So I'd probably be at a major disadvantage trying to put any fanfiction out there in such meetings seeing as I'd need to find a library to print it out or a bring a laptop just to let others view it.

For those that do, it would be an asset seeing as it would get their name and fiction out there. And fairly quickly at that, so I'm all for this idea.

494 Name: TheBeautyOfTheGrave : 2009-12-22 11:42 ID:2ecKkMKg

I think this is a really good idea, and I think not only will it make it more presentable, but it could also give the authors a sense of pride as well, like they have published their own book.
Very good idea :]

495 Name: BillieJean2925 : 2009-12-22 13:36 ID:BZC590/Q

I think that's a great idea! It would make things so much easier, though I agree with what .Cullens.The.Pack.And.Me.Love. said. If a story is too long, then should you just take one shots or extracts, mybe the first few chapters of a long one. That way, if there's another gathering, people that read yours before can carry on reading from the previous cliff hanger!

496 Name: Rio : 2009-12-22 14:27 ID:jUv+uc71

This idea is great. You can get a bit of an insight into the person before even talking to them just from their front page. Almost like an ice breaker! This whole thing is a way of building confidence as well.

497 Name: Aries4495 : 2009-12-22 14:46 ID:i6oyzkwI

This sounds like a great idea. I design my own covers at the moment but when I finish the fic that I have in the works right now then i might consider having it properly bound and suchlike.

498 Name: LonRider : 2009-12-22 14:50 ID:/BWmNiPX

I like this better than a "Hi my name is" tag on a shirt. Plus if someone wants to talk about a certain piece you have reference material at hand!

499 Name: Frich : 2009-12-22 14:57 ID:r8WERA7D

I think this is a great idea. people can become creative with the covers. as TheBeautyOfTheGrave said it can make you feel like you've made your own book.

500 Name: DancingInTheMoonlight : 2009-12-22 15:18 ID:sliw5Sff

I think this is great, I spend so much time reading fan fics online that I relish in the times that I get to actually read printed texts. Also it gives it all an air of formality and shows how much pride and effort people put into their own writing.

501 Name: DefineInsanity : 2009-12-23 10:42 ID:vMWjM8T3

love the idea. i won't repeat what's already been said previously, but i think it would really make people feel proud - and it's so much nicer to be able to see your work as a physical thing, rather than text on a screen.

502 Name: TheEpicFish : 2009-12-23 11:03 ID:lGfPqhRE

I love this idea, I think it's easier to read of a page than a computer.

503 Name: JazzieG : 2009-12-23 12:51 ID:z6ElkEqS

Great idea. Printed word, that you hold in your hands, can bring a whole new dimension to a story, and give people the opportunity to discuss face to face.

504 Name: EvilEyeSpirit : 2009-12-23 13:02 ID:9LkxOLGD

Again I like this ideas. It's finally nice to see someone doing something with fanficton. Also if people print off more than one they can give it out. Or they can write the internet link to their fanfiction on something like a bussiness card. This way people can read it for themselves in their own time.

505 Name: Kayleigh : 2009-12-23 13:48 ID:SFYhmKI1

Yes! That's an awesome idea! As long as there's no profit derived from it so that no-one gets in trouble, it's a brilliant suggestion. That way not only do you garner interest, you make it possible for others to enjoy your work sans internet access.

506 Name: xJx : 2009-12-23 14:08 ID:uDP9KPvY

I think this is a really good idea, combining fan art and fan fiction, plus i think it could possibly give people a preview of what the story contains.

507 Name: KyuubiNineTailedFox : 2009-12-23 23:13 ID:M+B83Jhn

I've already printed out one of my long stories, because I was so proud of it; but the rest of my stories are quite short. This is an epic idea!

508 Name: Megsta97 : 2009-12-24 01:59 ID:ZInlVFmc

Sounds as great as it did in the p.m.

509 Name: Dubbers : 2009-12-24 05:35 ID:Hno75lJQ

Definately a good idea. I think it'll make it feel more personal, and I often find that I will pick up things on a printed page that I don't on a computer.
And, as someone already said, it will give people a chance to combine fanart and fiction. Also, I think that it could also be used as a way to get other people at the gathering to draw for fiction that they otherwise wouldn't have been able to do. It think it's also a good idea because it's often easier to give advice and suggestions face to face when you have a copy of the fic in front of you.

510 Name: lana123 : 2009-12-24 07:26 ID:Fn0khHyD

i think this is a very good idea, as i have often found that not many people take interest in my fanfics simply because there are so many diffrent people have writen under the same tv show, book or movie. i think it was also a good idea, as someone else said, to include a web link to your profile or the story, so the people interested can continue to read through your work as you upload more to the internet.

511 Name: kat : 2009-12-24 12:10 ID:mwZx0qqo

This is such a good idea! It would make people feel really proud of what they have written. I love the site btw Yoshino :)

512 Name: Reem Reem : 2009-12-25 10:16 ID:blvrbEF7

Brilliant idea- presentation is always good. Would you have to print or could you write up by hand, because I know a lot of people who don't own printers.

513 Name: Reem Reem : 2009-12-25 11:47 ID:blvrbEF7

It's a brilliant idead- would it be okay to handwrite instead of printing as well?

514 Name: xMxAx : 2009-12-25 12:09 ID:t1XHV+Vz

Hey Yoshino :)

Again, I like this idea as much as the others :) Hope you manage to get it all sorted out :)

The idea is really amazing; I must say... never thought someone would actually come up with something like this before. It's an excellent idea

Hi! lwBfSe

517 Name: Darkest_Chrissy : 2009-12-26 10:36 ID:QLImYLik

The idea is a good one i guess it would help lead to the idea of lending the copies too friends of friends that are not normally into the fanfiction scene online get more people hooked of fan fic.

518 Name: LucyLicious xx : 2009-12-26 11:04 ID:hf+ZDv9n

I think this is a really good, original idea :).. so it's sort of like a folder of people's FanFicton? It would help people to give advice and opinions of their work and it could also be a conversation filler. As the offline meetings are for FanFiction- its brilliant and easy to look through work and that :) x

519 Name: paleconsequences : 2009-12-26 15:54 ID:fHkC0fMz

I do think this is an amazing idea. Though I, persoanlly, would be more interested in other people's work, in giving them feedback, and praise, (constructive criticism if necessary :P), whereas my own work isn't all that, though of course I would print it and bring it along because it's only fair XXD. I would love to know what other people thought, you know, face-to-face. My longest fic is 3 chapters, i tend to do one-shots.

I also agree that, along with a printed (or handwritten) fic/1st few chapters, a cover, that other details are necessary, if only so that everyone gets a chance to get along with everyone else. So, like nametags with your author names on it, and fanart - your own or art that others have drawn for you - is also great.

^v^

i love this idea! it's great! this forum is brilliant :)

522 Name: Smaltby : 2009-12-27 10:04 ID:K13NV1Vl

I love this, but maybe thats just because i jump at the idea to draw anything, it would make Fan-Fiction seem more real rather than just some sort of verual world. :D

523 Name: kacysparrow : 2009-12-27 11:37 ID:dWdUEycs

loved this idea! very cool!! we really need to get more recognition for this site and set up one of these meetings!

524 Name: FAiD : 2009-12-27 11:52 ID:eHSpK5VO

Sounds like a good idea. As you said, it would make fanfiction more presentable, perhaps giving it a novel-like feel. It would be easy to use pictures and such that are linked to the fanfiction, and its base, to create the cover. A ringbinder, or folder would make it all the more official. XD

525 Name: Espie : 2009-12-27 12:16 ID:Xz+3qNdz

To make it even more official you could add a synopsis or plot outline, so that even if you only bring the first three (max)chapters and cover, poeple would be bale to see what you have planned and if that would work. It's also help poeple who wish to become perfessonal writers like I am. Fanfiction is a great place to start writing and improve yourself I think.

526 Name: Metallic-Silver-Ink : 2009-12-27 12:49 ID:M6OpcUXN

It's a good idea, a way for all kind of writers to be able to share and get feedback on their work. The writer should pick their favourite story that they've written so that they're not carrying around all of their work, but it's a good start on helping each other improve, or just to have fun. I still think this website needs more than one person running it though.

527 Name: Kayleigh :) : 2009-12-27 14:31 ID:AA3SmsRg

Really good idea. Will make the authors be able to have them more as their own if that makes any sense. More creativity going into it as well and shows they actually care about it

528 Name: Fiver : 2009-12-27 16:06 ID:4GaZrqYR

Great idea :) I would actually prefer to swap stories in real life...sometimes reading off a computer screen gives me a killer headache and it just doesn't feel the same as reading off a page. Also I think people will give each other more critique face to face. Ever notice how the glaring majority of reviews on ff.net are just one-liners saying 'GREAT, update soon!!!' Of course we all love to be praised but we want to improve too...

And I agree that there should be a proper front cover too...it looks a lot more 'professional' :P It also gives you the opportunity to include your own or someone else's fanart. I often feel that's one disadvantage of fanfiction websites - there's no way to include images. Considering that most fanfic is based on anime or movies (or books that have been made into movies...), I'm sure a lot of people would like to see some art as well as read the story :)

529 Name: KiteRunnerx : 2009-12-28 13:36 ID:qrD3isXl

It's a great idea to be able to swap stories at the meetings, seeing as sometimes it's nicer to have the copy in your hand rather thn pixelized on a screen. Also, it's a great way to recieve constructive critique as Fiver mentioned (post 528) and it's easier to get across what you mean if you are talking face to face.

About the cover art, I think this is also a really good idea. It both gives your piece of writing a bit of visual flair and also shows off your talents if you do happen to be an arty sort of person.

530 Name: Spoilers : 2009-12-29 10:53 ID:p/X+9zq1

I'd love to show my fanfiction to people and get feedback in person. It's true that most reviews don't really do constructive criticism and I don't want to be over confident about my writing.
The cover art sounds good; unfortunately I know just what I want to be on mine, but it's OC heavy and I can't draw to save my life. But it would be more interesting.

531 Name: KakeruTamaki : 2009-12-30 06:59 ID:ZgMRhD/6

Yeah! meeting up with a more professional look to your work is more likely to inspire people to read it so in that respect, its an awesome idea. Im sure (simply by reading this page) that there are also a load of people more than willing to draw a cover for their stories!

532 Name: angelkitten365 : 2009-12-30 07:14 ID:t7kP0rMS

Finally! I found it >>

Sorry for such a late reply.

Funny thing is, I make covers for my fanfictions anyway -or I pay Raiden to do it- and I think it's a really good idea and as others have said it's better to have the fanfiction in front of you. Also, this way you might actually get constructive criticism. Having a front cover for a fanfiction- depending on what is on the cover- can help the readers imagination as well and a fanfic with a cover is more likely to draw people in rather than one without one.

I apologize if have the things I wrote make no sense. I am in fact both tried and sick.

533 Name: Girlaloud05 : 2009-12-30 07:19 ID:KrG0bxvX

Sound like a good idea, but to aviod legal issues, dsclamers would need to be place on them; saying somting along the lines of: e.g. J.R.R.Tolkien Ownns Lord of the rings. sadly, not me. that way we won't get sued, Yay!!

534 Name: PJB29 : 2009-12-30 13:24 ID:gW2m9sEM

Yes what an interesting idea, I think that putting a proper cover would be interesting and would bring fan art in to it. Yes I agree with Girlaloud05 that you would need to put disclaimers etc but lets make it happen???

535 Name: AngelSabar : 2010-01-02 03:29 ID:MIf48x/t

This is a great idea! I agree as far as disclaimers go but if you go to a meeting having your fanfiction available would be great. It would also - as you say - go a long way to making fanfiction more presentable. If the story was too long I suppose you could print off the first few chapters and a quick summary. All in all I like the idea!

536 Name: Steph : 2010-01-02 04:23 ID:OMAoZR3z

I printed my fanfiction off and even though the cover is a bit naff it looks awesome!!

537 Name: kitten87 : 2010-01-02 07:38 ID:sXv+jpA5

its an awesome idea to print off your own fanfics for ppl to read at offline meetings coz looking at a computer screen for to long gives me a headache. also i think havin front covers will be great coz it will make the stories look more professional and give everyone a chance to show off their art skills as well as their writing skills!!

538 Name: blackwitchkarma : 2010-01-03 14:39 ID:HYzhIBSJ

love the idea, it would put all of the chapters and words into focus and give everyone a sense of accomplishment

539 Name: SapphireElric : 2010-01-04 12:08 ID:fp3z3obO

I think it's a brilliant idea to print fanfictions and give them to people at meetings. FF.net is great and everything but at a meeting, you don't really expect computers to be brought along, so you can't show each other the work you've done.

540 Name: Someone New : 2010-01-04 12:52 ID:4r29Q5WQ

Really like this idea. I know people (myself included) who can't stand reading massive chunks of text off a computer screen.

A cover will make our fanfics seem much more professional and will give most, if not all, of us a real sesne of accomplishment.

Great idea!

541 Name: Sinsanatrix : 2010-01-04 13:10 ID:8XGEh2I9

542 Name: BeccaSwan : 2010-01-04 13:23 ID:Q51Z9Zb5

I think this is a great idea, putting a cover on your fanfiction allows the reader to create a first impression of your story before they've even read the first page.

I agree that it would make your work more presentable when handing it out, and people will instantly recognise your work if you have a noticable front cover.

So yes, I think it's definately worthwhile doing :)

543 Name: Insert_witty_comment_here : 2010-01-04 13:31 ID:BHRj9Zx7

I think this is definitely a great idea - if a lot of people came you would probably need some sort of system to organise the Fanfiction by, so that people could easily find the type of stuff they like.

544 Name: Rowanxxx : 2010-01-04 13:44 ID:SazKm+v8

I think this is a good idea. A good way to make sure the meet ups are never stuck in an awkward first meeting with nothing to do. I alo think it will help others discuss there work and brainstorm ideas.
I also think the title page is a good way to make the writing stand out more. It gives the person a feel of writting a publishable book. However I have yet to ry this idea with my own writing.

545 Name: Omeggia : 2010-01-04 15:35 ID:XpSlYBun

This sounds like an excellent idea. Not only does it help keep fan fictions organised but it also puts them a step closer to becoming proper novels. Also front covers are vital for leaving a lasting impression on a could be reader. I like this idea =D

546 Name: Mikel Midnight : 2010-01-04 15:52 ID:bC7eO4+J

A fun idea so long as it stops there. I don't know how many copies one has to make of such a thing before it starts having legal ramifications.

547 Name: juanafever : 2010-01-04 18:09 ID:eE8qUS45

>>547 I don't think there should be any problems as long as we don't try to make any profit out of those prints. I think it's the same as having them online if you don't make money out of it and say who really owns the original characters it should be fine. If they had problem with fan-fiction they would close fan-fiction net first and sites like it.

That is a great idea. It does make it feel the writing more real since you can show a solid proof for your work. I plan to go to one of those gatherings and I will try and print my stories. The question is how many copies do you guys bring? One and you pass it around or more? Because the long stories can be a pain to print more than once.

548 Name: Suabeth : 2010-01-05 10:09 ID:yZrE6fMT

I agree with Mikel Midnight and juanafever. I think as long as they are kept for personal use only then it's a fantastic idea. The only issue is printing costs - especially for long stories - but that is the writer's perogative.

The great thing about this too is that a printout with a front cover and contents page also works as a kind of gift to those who recieve it, if the writer is offerring a set amount of copies rather than one to be shared around.

549 Name: Dramione1996 : 2010-01-05 10:13 ID:OPiFgkFZ

It's also great for those who love both art and writing. =)

definitely a good idea especially because i prefer to read something on paper tha on the internet. even though that doesnt stop me lol! i also think that if it is a fanfic, then on the front or just the first page, it should have the title of the fiction of whose characters you're using, just to be clear!

556 Name: christinesangel100 : 2010-01-05 14:23 ID:AVAVSWis

557 Name: Blizzard : 2010-01-05 14:41 ID:TmP6f/xz

It seems a brilliant idea but ink costs money so does paper as much as I hate to put a damper on it it seems impractical. although I know Anime conventions do something similar they get a printing company to take on the costs I'm not sure we could get a company to take on that kind of cost without mass producing and selling which is illegal.

I like to make front pages on my fanfictions because I send them to my friends abroad so I'm normally making them anyway. Most I do on the computer because I can't draw to save my existence ^^;

Overall, it's an awesome idea, especially if the person meets up numerous people then your fic could be passed around from place to place.

It would also make it feel more like a proper published book and that would be great.

As far as ink price is concerned, just print work off as 'draft quality'. Draw the cover by hand rather than on computer. Done.

I used to love drawing, but I'm kinda awful at it so I sorta gave up, but I do know some people that draw brilliantly so it'd be alright, haha.

So I guess the idea is similar to the Doujinshi community, where people base comics off various things. Not bad, seems like a fair idea. As long as rights are -always- given.
I can draw a bit, nothing proffessional, but it's good enough. I could probably do a few gifts <:

565 Name: Erika : 2010-01-06 19:09 ID:he06MtWi

I think it would be a fantastic idea.

I mean it's one copy and even though i can't draw to save my life i would be more than happy to do.

Also just think of what a good converstation starter it would be, no worried about how you are going to introduce yourself to different people.

Just - "Wow i love your book cover, did you draw it yourself?

I really want a gathering now!! lol

566 Name: pyro-chan : 2010-01-07 06:42 ID:7T4m9lOn

Sounds excellent - if people are to take fanfiction more seriously then it is perfectly reasonable that their works should have front covers. It also gives them an opportunity to express their work using art, potentially; a way to express what their writing is about through more than just a title.

567 Name: K_D_S : 2010-01-08 04:35 ID:5tDsSKAM

Hey, this sounds awesome! That way you won't actually have to go onto the internet or anything to read them and it'll be so much easier if people want to tell you about there own because instead of "Hey, go check out my FF at insert long and complex link here" it''l just be "Hey, here's my FF"

574 Name: Kburn : 2010-01-09 22:07 ID:mz6vExdY

I'm here to give my say cuz I was asked to.

This is certainly a great idea. As people have already said, a disclaimer would be needed just like with online work. As for covers even people with no wave of creating there own cover, could either ask for permission to use a fan art, or use a stock image of the show/film in question.

Long stories could be printed in part, with at the end a TBC marker along with the online location for the story so the person could read the rest. This would help people without the budget to print the entire lenght of there FF if it was huge.

Also at said gathering, comments can be given, and if the gathering was large enough, the group could try and decided on the best works. A little compertition is know to inspire great works in the future.

One last thing. For those like me who would like to show off more then one story, a ringbound folder or something could be used to carry multiply, and then everyone could read them. With printed off copies of the list of the work in the folder could be given out with the link for someone to read if having all the work would be to large. This would probably be good for people who have a series of FF instead of stand alone works.

575 Name: Impish : 2010-01-10 07:57 ID:AKwcavc6

I'm also here to say my piece because I was asked :)

I love the idea of a gathering start with; it would be really great to meet others who share the same love of fan work as I do. I love the idea of everyone bringing along a piece or five to share ^^
Covers shouldn't be too much of a problem, as KBurn said it's very easy to find stock images online, but if you don't want to that, perhaps a board could be set up here where artists advertise that they are happy to do covers for people for their work before a gathering? It shouldn't be too hard to scan in a drawn image and then email over a digital copy, should it?
I think the cover should be not only to represent the story or work, but also the author too. That way a piece would be more recognisable as being by a particular person. I know a lot of books that I can recognise the author of just by glancing at the style of the cover rather than the name on the book :)

Again, if the FF was huge maybe the writer could select a few of his or her favourite chapters or extracts to bring instead of the whole thing if it's too big or too expensive to create a hard copy?

I love the idea of small competitions between us; perhaps there could also be a small help section where people could bring along work they stuck with for advice and input?

576 Name: ruby diamonds : 2010-01-10 08:21 ID:Sn0aCm+z

i think this is a really good idea!! i know that with some of the fanfiction stories, if the character names were changed, then they would be an amazing book, instead of just fanfiction. having a front page and everything would be a great thing to do to establish this idea.

577 Name: Jouseika-chan : 2010-01-10 08:42 ID:RUI93V3Z

It is an excellent idea. Having a front cover with the title and author's name makes it easily distinguishable as to whose it is, so any comments, praise or helpful critiques can be made to the right person.
It also gives people a chance to express their story in art, or if they couldn't but have fanart for their story anyway, it can be displayed and then credited to the artist.

Some fanfictions are practically novels wih other people's characters in them, and every novel has a front cover, so having a front cover for a fanfiction would make it more professional.
It's a brilliant idea, people could also help each other out with it.

578 Name: sleepingbutterfly : 2010-01-10 09:18 ID:mc5p5x1H

I think this is a brilliant idea. I've printed off some of my work, but it just feels like a load of jumbled, old sheets without a cover. It would allow you to personalise your work and give a clear representation of what it is. Not only is it good to have with you at a gathering, but when friends of family members are reading it, it makes fanfiction seem less of a joke (as most none fanfiction lovers eem to think)and more of a serious hobby. As people have already pointed out, there is no lack of material that could be used as a front page.

579 Name: DarkFallenAngel : 2010-01-10 13:47 ID:Icgn2kC1

I'm in! Awesome idea in my view. I'm all for it, it makes it seem more proffesional, which is good because when I'm talking about fanfiction writing to my friends, some see it just as a hobby when some, including me, are very serious about it.

I think it would be great to have an offline gathering and discuss the fanworks. It would be interesting to see other people's opinions upon this. It would make for intriguing debates! Of course, a place and time would have to be sorted out by everybody who would like to come to this occasion. I probably can't because of school (soon to be college). Oh, well. What do others think? The best time would be in school holiday times.

A front cover is a good idea; makes the author's works more recognisable for one, and also unique. I agree with some of the other posters that say there should be a disclaimer - but I suppose people always have disclaimers in their actual fics too, don't they, before the start of the chapter/s?

Anyways, it'd be great fun to actually attend one of these fan gatherings! ^^

582 Name: Ginger-pig : 2010-01-11 10:10 ID:blO32wnz

Afront cover? Coll idea, but i don't know, for different people it would be different sized covers. unless you wanted the fan-fictions to be a certain size.
any way, it's a good idea, i would deffinatley go to a gathering.

583 Name: Suri : 2010-01-11 11:00 ID:pon+pgrk

I think that's a good idea, especially cuz then ppl can promote their fanfics. i know how hard it was for me to grab people's attention on fanfiction.net and its so frustrating when u dont get reviews! so at least there's that knowledge that ppl wana read ur stuff :)
id definitely go 2 a gathering as well :)

584 Name: TenshiHyuuga : 2010-01-11 13:26 ID:m9FT5CZO

I think it's a very good idea. And I agree with other people's posts that say it will make it seem more professional. And I'd also go to a gathering ^_^

585 Name: Orange : 2010-01-11 13:40 ID:4LLdGap1

I like this idea! Like you say, even if we can't draw, we can always just have a nice title page to the front so that it stands out. I'd definitely do this.
Plus making a front cover would give me an excuse to draw, which is always a plus!

586 Name: Trashlife. : 2010-01-12 08:29 ID:0UlzgCmq

You mailed me about this idea! It's awesome, I can think of covers for Miles High now....

587 Name: Katt : 2010-01-12 14:45 ID:zi3vdHls

I also got mailed about this idea on fanfiction.net, and personally, i think it's a really good idea as it would add another dimension to people's writing, especially if you're into fan art as well :)

588 Name: Drakien Seckuro : 2010-01-12 14:46 ID:NwSMjCxF

I think the ideas awsome, the only problem I'd have is coming up with what the image should contain...

589 Name: Bronach : 2010-01-12 14:53 ID:o3aJ+Wda

I think this is a really good idea if people are going to meet up. It links fanfiction and fanart which is always a plus :)

590 Name: Tiny-Tiny-T : 2010-01-12 14:56 ID:N9TMNUB/

I think if planned properly a gathering is a great idea- it gives people a chance to make friendships over something they have in common and it induces a lot of friendly banter. Also in regards to a front cover for fics, I think that it's a brilliant way of catching the browsers attention. I know that there's the saying 'don't judge a book by it's cover' but there's no harm in at least making an effort to present the fic well with an outstanding front cover.

591 Name: Beka Alcott : 2010-01-13 02:17 ID:bL3vl7zB

I think the front cover idea is pretty cool ... I like it in particular because it would be lots of fun to design and create a front cover, as someone who writes fanfiction, loves art, but doesn't tend to mix the two! Its a nice way to mesh fanart and fanfiction together. :)

592 Name: joayla : 2010-01-13 10:00 ID:nfhDSWMe

hi i think it is a great idea people have banner links on Fanfiction.net so why not have a front cover.

593 Name: the one thats everywhere you go : 2010-01-13 14:21 ID:b1gwD8sC

it sounds great it would definatley help people to recognise eachothers fan-fictions and it would make everything feel more organised and may make people feel better about sharing fan-fictions they have worked on really hard

594 Name: Anton : 2010-01-13 14:28 ID:KnSRVq6/

wow, there is a lot of people on that one, with replys nearing 600. your doing quite well for your self Moonlight. ^.^

595 Name: Allie : 2010-01-13 14:58 ID:z8pD6LUq

this sounds like a great idea :)

596 Name: Jenny : 2010-01-14 08:46 ID:fyZz3njl

I think this is a great idea! It will make the stories seem a lot more personal I think after all the hard work people will have put into them. Although I think it would be costly and annoying to print out more than one copy of a long story but the first couple of chapters just as a taster sounds good.

597 Name: Edward-Cullens-Little-Whore◆WBRXcNtpf. : 2010-01-14 09:14 ID:dzqLYQ/W

I also was emailed about this idea and i think that its great, it would make people feel more proud of their stories and make them seem more like real novels when you hold the pages with your writing on in your hands, But as you said Jenny it could cost you quit a bit due to ocost paper and ink.

598 Name: XxJamiexNataliexEtheringtonxX : 2010-01-14 10:07 ID:WsdMpBed

I think this is an awesome idea, if anyone was to do this for real then I'd probably show up -it depends if I go alone or not coz I'd wanna be with someone who I've met before who writes fan fics...=P-. The only problem with the printing is the fact that I'll probably use all the paper I own...=P, coz I'm still writing my 1st fan fiction and I'm on my 30th chapter...=P. I don't know how I'm gonna finish it so if I were to print it out (including the cover), I'd probably use up all the ink in the printer and use up about 40 pages...=P.

599 Name: Tsuki-No-Iona : 2010-01-15 08:02 ID:aRNeoEox

Sounds like a really good idea for allowing people who like both to put the two together :D

600 Name: animeloveramy : 2010-01-15 09:32 ID:BCptFNL5

i've allways thought that some fanfictions should be printed as book if the author of the origanal manga or book or whatever thinks its ok. they could share any profits made and more people would be able to read it.

of cource, its not likely to happen like that so doing it like you have stated would be great and a good start if it ever continued. ^-^

601 Name: XNekoAngel14X : 2010-01-15 17:55 ID:Uq5SmZjJ

I think this is a brilliant idea. It is an easy way to share your fan-fictions and get feedback. I have on written a few chapters of my fan-fiction, but I think that even if you only printed a few chapters out it would be enough. I would definatly try to particiapte in one of these meetings if one was announced. The city closest to me is London, and that is also one of the closest and easiest cities to get to for many people.

602 Name: Meeoko : 2010-01-16 05:01 ID:9OJ+B6tu

It certainly sounds like a good idea. The only problem I can forsee is if someone's fan fiction is incredibly long (mine are at least 25 chapters each). But I do like the idea of a front cover. It's sort of like advertising.

603 Name: Librastar : 2010-01-16 13:27 ID:TEPww8mL

What a lovely idea! We could even trade them, and maybe make people sign them if we like them XP

604 Name: Z-Nadka-ZAK : 2010-01-17 03:43 ID:NBPs+mrl

That sounds like a good idea, though there are a few problems I see (which have probably already been replied to, but with 600+ comments...)

  1. The cost of printing it. If it's a drabble/one-shot, it would be fine. But with large multi-chaptered fics with long chapters, that can come to a problem...
  2. Mass printing will also come to a problem, especially with sharing, assuming more than one person will want to read it (more of a problem with multi-chaptered fics, again).
  3. Copyright infringement (though I suppose a disclaimer and making it non-profit would make up for this).

That's all I can think of... It seems like a good idea in theory, but practically, it's a bit of trouble.

605 Name: Skylinebooshlover : 2010-01-18 04:48 ID:V8YRfacr

Sounds like a good idea, Z-Nadka-ZAC makes some very good points, which would need to be considered but yes its a good idea or maybe even a link to your fanfiction you can hand out tso they can research you after the meeting :)

606 Name: Jestervalaia : 2010-01-18 06:46 ID:w0VA9+d4

I like the idea, the only issue that a lot of people have already pointed out is the cost of printing. I'd have to go to somewhere that would print it out for me because I don't normally need to print anything out.
I suppose it could always be hand-written, but it would take a fair length of time and I don't know about other people but my handwriting isn't the easiest to read.

607 Name: Star Gamer : 2010-01-18 09:00 ID:dvqwrC2v

Nice! The trading of ideas is great so that you can take inspiration from others. I like writing stories although i don't get much time. Have any of you been to www.fanfiction.net?

608 Name: CazzyLove : 2010-01-18 12:26 ID:aIFmNgFH

I think it's a great idea ^^ and it would make it more fun so you could get Ideas from people and give real life feed back ^^ And Star Gamer I'm on fanfiction.net (I'm under the same name as this) ^^ ^^ ^_^
love peace and chocolate ^^ ^^ ^_^
Blessed Be ^^ ^^ ^_^

609 Name: L.Nightley : 2010-01-18 12:41 ID:8mf+lDu9

The idea of a front cover sounds good to me, especially if you're sharing your work with others, it would definately make it more recognisable. I live near Lincoln so that's the closest place I could get to.

610 Name: MissPodoodle : 2010-01-18 13:21 ID:P3rfeKnD

I think it is a good idea. The front cover would make it a lot more presentable and clear.
People could always just print one copy and share it around the group at the meeting so as to save costs of printing, ink and paper, etc.
If anyone wants to bring more, they could also photocopy it? I don't think it costs too much to photocopy something, although it would be in completely black and white, but then we know who the original belongs to XD

611 Name: Mrs.MonroeJacksonRathbone : 2010-01-18 13:28 ID:iEuMIlGr

I definitely think it is a good idea, especially with the front cover.

612 Name: Discover : 2010-01-18 14:27 ID:9nSXcBtG

yeh that seems a great idea. I have thought it would be cool to have a hard copy of fan-fiction, the internet is great and all but nothing beats a real book. It would be useful for people who can't get access to the internet all the time also it's nice to look at a book of some sort and think 'hehe I wrote that'. The front cover sounds good too, it gives people a way of being more creative, and giving people a little extra bit than they would get on the web.

613 Name: Valmarien : 2010-01-18 15:30 ID:QH+qcK/7

I think printing front covers would be indispensible if authors want to share and swap works - we would need a way to make the works recognisable.

614 Name: PrettyGreen : 2010-01-18 17:14 ID:PQl+FDRb

I like the idea of a front cover to your work. It gives it a more personal feel.

615 Name: Twilight's hound : 2010-01-19 08:32 ID:cF2d7TuF

yeah, it's an awesome idea. that way people can see their readers reactions for real, also i agree with discover about nothing beating a good book, and about the feeling of pride over haveing some physical evidence that you've written something. it also gives a talking point for offline meetings, if the authors are comfortable with their story being talked about of course. i like the idea though, it's good.

616 Name: Freeburnerr : 2010-01-19 14:52 ID:V/BvnVZD

I think it's a good idea, but with three major problems:

1) If a fanfiction is unfinished it'd be sorta pointless to bring it
2) Printing problems
3) Organisation problems and such

However, I am sorta shooting it down and as ambitious as it is, printing fanfictions out is a good idea. Difficult, but good.

617 Name: Khfan-forlife : 2010-01-19 16:09 ID:mPDSsE3E

Hey, i managed to get on this thing. I see some recognisable names from fanfiction.net. This sounds like a good idea, like your very own book others can read outside of the internet. Also if your fanfiction is incomplete it could just encourage you to want to read more. Like a trailer of your fiction, you can always post up your completed work online. Having a title would just make it more attractive, easier to read and make you feel more achievement of your work (as it has been given a title).

618 Name: Hanmy : 2010-01-20 08:15 ID:lJ49pcIt

Hey,
Yeah I think it sounds like a really great idea :) The more people we can geto to do this the better ^^ Imagine gatherings of like, 100+ people, all sharing and discussing fan-art and fanfiction :D

Love
Amy

619 Name: Daisy Diadem : 2010-01-20 08:59 ID:3LkfsjGa

I like the sound of this idea, it makes it look more presentable and also gives the reader an impression before reading the fanfiction. This could also be considered for Fan-art, giving a title of the arts as a collection if that is what they are.

I would definately love to attend one, ofcourse if I was to take my fanfiction along with me, it would just be very short as I have a one-shot and an unfinished piece that is in desperate need of editing and re-writing. At the moment I am working on personal projects but I do have plans to write new fiction and edit my old.

Keep on writing.

Daisy Diadem

620 Name: tigga123 : 2010-01-20 09:24 ID:CjlWWyi1

I think it's a good idea. A way of showing others what you write can give you a boost in confidense and you could get feed back from someone face to face as well. I like the idea.

621 Name: BeaBea : 2010-01-20 10:46 ID:jaeNa4q7

Sounds like a great idea to me! Course, seeing as I take forever to write anything, could be interesting :S

622 Name: Anonymous : 2010-01-20 13:34 ID:xuH0voam

I think that's it's a really good idea, as it does make the entire story much more presentable and it also makes it look a lot better. It can also tell other people a lot about yourself if drawn correctly.

623 Name: ShadowLamb : 2010-01-20 14:01 ID:hcOlZpht

I also think it is a great idea! Just might be an issue if people aren't in to the same fandoms or couples etc- but it would make for great discussions. It doesn't even necessarily have to be hand-drawn if you're not too good at it- you could even find a picture online somewhere, as long as you credit.

Hopefully everyone would remain civil at these gatherings though and not be harsh- also some people might not want to read particular types of fic but they obviously don't have to if they don't want to!

624 Name: Bethan : 2010-01-20 14:45 ID:tDQxdoOy

hey youv been disscussing ideas with me on fanfic itself- i think this is a brilliant idea. the stories could get more known then. and like someone here said it would give them a more personal feeling and uniqueness. another really good idea. this offline meeting thing could really work if people wanted it to. x

625 Name: Wolf-Kaiserin : 2010-01-20 14:57 ID:p1PWNraZ

Hey there :)

This is an absolutely fantastic idea! I'm a terrible drawer, but I'd still really enjoy trying XD So how would we get big sites like ff.net to do this? And I'm game for an offline meeting, although I'm not very agile :P I can barely be bothered to go get food so it'd have to be nearby.

626 Name: jestervalaia : 2010-01-20 15:27 ID:w0VA9+d4

So far it's looking like either the 13th or 14th, right? That's the first weekend after the 12th and a lot of people are saying that's when they break up.

What about a time?

And exactly where...is there an agreed place to meet up?

627 Name: jestervalaia : 2010-01-20 15:28 ID:w0VA9+d4

Damn it, ignore that...computer spazzed out on me, shifted boxes and posted it somewhere else

628 Name: UniqueLikeNoOther : 2010-01-20 15:37 ID:Uj44kL7c

Sounds like a really good idea. Especially if you do both writing and drawings, combining the best into one that easy to access.
Also, considering this is more than just fan-fiction stories but also pictures and images, it would also be good if artists print out a collection of their art that's online, or making photocopies so the origionals don't get damaged.

629 Name: Laced-With-Fire : 2010-01-20 15:49 ID:BVSOGq3R

I think that's a good idea, if it has cover art then that's fantastic, if not then it's just a good way of making it look more friendly than lots of text.

630 Name: Soubi : 2010-01-21 14:44 ID:eWn/dc8+

I think in theory this could be a good idea. Cover art is a very unique thing to every individual. The problem would come if someone who couldnt have a cover would perhaps be upset if presented with a fan fic that had a great colourful drawn cover. Other than that, great idea, I might actually do one myself. Tho my fanfic isnt finished at only 4 chapters. lol.

631 Name: EvilPumpkin◆UB4.cH7hho : 2010-01-22 10:51 ID:GhSBugaN

I think this is a great idea, especially if everyone brought along several photocopies so that others could take fanfics home with them.

I spend too much time in class drawing art for fanfictions anyway... x_x

632 Name: Lutra-Gem : 2010-01-22 10:52 ID:AbyZcaCi

I certainly think it's an interesting idea, although it would definitely be biased towards those with artistic and/or graphical design skills. You'd also have to be careful about your distribution of the texts - almost by definition the contents of the fan-fic isn't yours (aside from plot and OC's), so whether rules would have to be made about what's acceptable is something to consider. Distribution should -definitely- not be for profit but publicity/demonstration.

633 Name: Narlth : 2010-01-22 11:18 ID:IDnw+/MR

Thats a cool idea, there'd need to be a specfied theme or somthing other wise you could get loads of fan-fics about something no one has read/watched.

The art would be fun to make as I tend to end up drawing scenes from various fan-fictions, without having anything to do with the finished product.

634 Name: Jordan : 2010-01-22 12:15 ID:ua2asxgU

It is a good idea... and yes we do have to consider rules and copywrite etc.
However, being a bit of a tree hugger :L and an environmentalist... this isnt the best idea for our environment or animal habitates etc. Taking one copy with you is a good idea but i do not like the idea of taking them to distribute, instead people could just bring the link to the fanfiction site or forum they are using.

635 Name: Gemma : 2010-01-22 14:02 ID:/LyGFgsu

It really is a good idea, I think a theme for each meeting would be a good idea. It would make it different from what you see other things doing at offline meetings. Plus it can really give you a confidence boost knowing that the people are sharing their stuff to and that your ideas are getting put out there.

636 Name: Gemma : 2010-01-22 14:02 ID:/LyGFgsu

It really is a good idea, I think a theme for each meeting would be a good idea. It would make it different from what you see other things doing at offline meetings. 637 Name: Sammii : 2010-01-22 14:09 ID:e8qe68sX

Having a front cover on your fan-fic is also another great idea of yours. It will then seem more personal to that specific person. And it will also make it seem more interesting for others to read if they like the front cover enough.

Keep up the good work!

638 Name: Tama-chan : 2010-01-22 15:14 ID:YHljxxZ+

I think that is an interesting idea and that a front cover would appeal to more people than a simple non-descript one

639 Name: bloodandvanity : 2010-01-23 07:32 ID:rQ1aEG4G

Hey, I said I'd give feedback so here I am, yey! I think it's a great idea it means people can show what they were trying to convey with their story, and it adds more fun to it all. I'm about to finish one of my fics soon, I may just do this cover art thing, it'd be like I actually wrote a book...that is insane!

640 Name: Rowan Kacy : 2010-01-23 14:54 ID:sR5kDDEv

I think this is a good idea, iv printed of some of my fan fictions before to share with other people and i relaly think its a good way to get the work out there.

641 Name: AnimeJM : 2010-01-23 15:00 ID:zwkU4lpY

This is interesting.
Though people's different artistic abilities would show and may make some others uncomfortable.
Still, this is a great idea and is brilliant for making your fanfic better known.

642 Name: Zoe : 2010-01-24 05:07 ID:0/1ATLv5

Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. I don't know how I would design a front cove for any of my fanfictions though... I'm not that artistic.

643 Name: Paddywhack : 2010-01-24 11:28 ID:owfq/H0V

Yeah, I think this is a really good idea, as I sometimes find in general that I'd prefer to read fanfics when they are on paper, rather than on the screen. I'd definitely consider doing it.

644 Name: Moretta : 2010-01-24 12:17 ID:/N1gXDG+

While I quite like the idea of a cover-page, this means that you, basically, want to turn fanfic into a book with a recognisable cover.
Apart from laws mentioned above, this is really expensive for everyone involved. I don't know if you all buy your own paper/printer cartidges, but I do, and if I printed out my fanfictions that I like the most + covers, it may not be that expensive, but do this for every meeting and more than one copy of each and it'll turn out to be expensive as well as really bad for the environment.
Reading fics online is one of those things that people either like or not, but if they're really against it they can print them out themselves (after having had a chat with the author, if they want a cover-page).

As for distributing it, well, we're back at the copyright laws. Not legally allowed to sell the fics, but we CAN just give them out. On the other hand, it would be ridiculously difficult to get feedback, which is what most authors need as inspiration for them to keep writing.

So yeah, that's my contribution.

645 Name: Abby : 2010-01-24 12:49 ID:hMFwTFzK

Love the idea and I Think That It would be good to share your work with others so you can get feedback and such

646 Name: Paramore11 : 2010-01-24 13:15 ID:hwVuYCaN

I think its a good idea im intested in seeing other peoples work actaully printed out, and vice versa ,i would like some feedback on mine if i ever printed it out.

647 Name: chuck uber fan. : 2010-01-24 13:20 ID:9sBMAvAy

i love the idea and think that if you could not be aretisict you could have your fanfition site, youbute site , and myspace adress on it.
wiht your story.
i love the idea and think it would work well

648 Name: WhiteAtropos : 2010-01-24 13:52 ID:XNOyRlzY

I like the idea but it is expensive to print especially if your work has run away and suddenly become a 30k+ epic. Maybe instead people could print out a section of their fanfiction that they are proud of along with a cover sheet with details on where to find the rest of their work if they're interested?

649 Name: Angel015 : 2010-01-24 14:01 ID:+/GwKV3b

I like the idea, but as it has been said before this can become expensive. Prehaps the best way to hand out during meetings is to have a few laptops/computers handy, and have people save their story on a USB then transfer it onto the laptop/computer, then send to everyone via email. Just a (cheaper) idea. Those who want to print can, but this can't be good for the enviroment

650 Name: Redondo20 : 2010-01-24 23:35 ID:SGSp+re1

It sounds like a really good idea actually. It wouldn't be too hard to either draw a cover or find an artistic friend to do it for you.

651 Name: Bethany : 2010-01-25 08:43 ID:MPZwu1b6

i like this idea. but i definately like the of USB transfer, if everyone brought their laptop of at least their USB stick/pen we could easilyn transfer work. AND...if someone was in a case of writers block, they could be helped out by other writers.

652 Name: Winchester Angel : 2010-01-26 13:48 ID:0mHzlPMI

It sounds like a good idea, but i also agree that it would be bad for the environment. That's the reason why most fics are on sites.

653 Name: McGee2-0 : 2010-01-28 03:51 ID:zO+1KO93

I like the idea, if you can't draw I know a free art site where you can search for good pictures however please notify the artist you plan to use their picture its www.deviantart.com just sign up and search its easy and you don't have to pay or get emails selling you rubbish. Also if you do hand out published fanfics they have to be free for copyright issues. And I agreed with the USB transfer because it could get expensive

654 Name: Akira Cat : 2010-01-28 06:26 ID:lMJt7lHi

I like it. It gives people a chance to show they can do art as well as just writing. Obviously it's okay if not everyone is a good artist and all. But it's a bad idea.

655 Name: Akira Cat : 2010-01-28 06:27 ID:lMJt7lHi

Sorry about the last bit in my respose! I meant a good idea!

656 Name: Melusina. : 2010-01-28 12:05 ID:9q50msoq

i think this is a great idea, as you said, makes it unique and different, and as, again, others have said, a chance to use their creative side.

657 Name: BlackHeartedNinja : 2010-01-28 13:36 ID:WRJTGY6X

that is a pretty good idea man very unique

658 Name: Dory-Tox : 2010-01-28 13:49 ID:NUkwrBIo

An interesting Idea, it allows people to be able to quickly see what the fanfic is based on and makes it more like a real book.

659 Name: NotQuiteHuman01 : 2010-01-28 14:41 ID:rPoanaWe

i would love it! i love to draw and this would be so much fun as well as helpful for offline mettings awesome idea!

660 Name: ShigUr3' : 2010-01-28 14:43 ID:bivgkgmg

It's a good idea so I'm all for it. If I can get the printer working haha.

661 Name: hoshixcandy : 2010-01-29 10:06 ID:TqEEvMxG

interesting concept this. I believe it would work greatly as it would encourage others to let their work be written, which may boost confidence if they're the shy type.

On the front cover a little bit of background of the text/anime/game etc used would help with context too, for those who haven't heard of the used topic : )

Even if the story isn't complete, a small preview would be enough for an individual to work towards something ^^

662 Name: snappydog : 2010-01-29 13:32 ID:R2oKyU/a

I think it's a great idea if you want to share your work in an offline context, since when you're online people know what sort of stories they're looking for. I agree with hoshixcandy, it could be useful if you were to put the category and maybe some background info on it on the front.

663 Name: xxxJellybeanxxx : 2010-01-29 14:24 ID:68uzChlC

Yeah, I think it's a good idea too.

664 Name: LucyLouisaAliceXx : 2010-01-29 14:36 ID:+9SfNSuy

I think it's a great idea to have a front cover for work. It could show both the genre and tone of the writing, and clearly display the name of the fiction and the author.

665 Name: XLady_Nazina_Of_The_Western_LandsX : 2010-01-29 14:44 ID:e2Ro3nHw

This is, to me a great idea also. Considering that is your fiction reaches the right people and is mind gripping and good, you may have the possibility of a career in writing, if you are passionate about it. I believe this is one of the best ideas so far.

Nikki.

great idea for those who are passionate and like the idea of having a manuscript

668 Name: MistressWinowyll : 2010-01-30 12:00 ID:CUoGgVEu

I like the idea. Still, there will have to be more then just an idea thrown in. It would require organization of more then several people working in unison and then coordinate a time frame in which to meet. Lets not also forget it would have to be public, involve a lot of commitment from more then just the person setting it up. Also, there has to be an anticipated amount of people expected to NOT show up. Plan for it. Also, it's going to have to start cheap...dirt cheap. It's all a matter of getting organized and then sharing information. Baby steps before we walk or run.

Your Mistress.

669 Name: Gael : 2010-01-30 12:27 ID:1C29IVhB

It sounds like a fair idea to me. Of course they don't have to be elaborate or anything, just something that can be recognisable and won't easily get mistaken for something else :)

670 Name: Lex =) : 2010-01-30 14:39 ID:CHllXD1u

I think it's a good idea but if people are more suited to writing one-shots or just a couple of page long stories, people wouldn't necessarily want a cover to look at and would perhaps prefer to acknowledge the images recieved from the fiction in their own head.

I love the idea but if you've got a page what would the use of a cover be?

Sincerly intrigued,

Lex =)

671 Name: hairymclary : 2010-01-30 15:43 ID:gmhW7Nbr

Personally speaking, it makes a big difference to have your writing on paper (even if it's just printed off), and being able to have people read and feedback on it there and then, in front of you, could be really useful. After all, online, you can't tell where people are laughing/crying/confused/smashing-computer-screen-in-frustration/insert-relevant-description-of-emotions-here. And I know I don't review every story I ever read on fanfic.net.

There should probably be a list of things someone should put on a cover, even if it's just a kind of guideline - Title, category (you don't want to pick up a fanfic and find it's for a book you've never read!), possible genre, any warnings (e.g. slash, language), that kind of thing.

Yeah, it sounds like quite a good idea, but I agree with Mistress about the organisation thing.

672 Name: lulabybaby : 2010-01-31 06:27 ID:nMNMzsa9

I think this is a good idea. It would also benifit to have the link to your story online on the front cover too, I think.
Also, if I was to go to a meeting it would be in London, as that's where I live. Somewhere in Greenwich or Bexley (my closest boroughs).

673 Name: F15HLE9 : 2010-01-31 13:07 ID:LeHaQ4Kc

Sounds like a good idea to me, would certainly make FanFiction more appealing, rather than, as you said, just a bunch of words on paper. It would certainly be awkward if there were no front covers; you'd have to read the first couple of sentances for each stroy until you found the one you were looking for. Exceedingly tedious...

674 Name: Mae : 2010-01-31 13:15 ID:vqjd/Rmn

I think it's a great idea! Personally, I'm attracted to books based from their covers. I believe that in some cases, the cover symbolises the story.
So why not in fanfiction?

675 Name: Rozzer : 2010-02-01 10:09 ID:lcMEDg+a

This seems like a good idea. Personally, covers are normally what make me, at least, want to know what the book is about. With a nice cover more people would find it appealing and want to read the fanfiction.

676 Name: Swiftswallow : 2010-02-01 10:47 ID:ewUAFrgt

It's a good idea but would you have to elaminate them and stuff to keep them clean and would people bring 2nd copys if other people wanted to take copys home with them or could one person be nominated to keep a copy of all the fanfics people want to share so that overtimes a collection builds up?

677 Name: Xitheta : 2010-02-01 12:01 ID:iAHPN394

for fanfiction writen by no great artistic talent, stock photos of the fandom in question (eg. david tennant/billie piper for a 10Rose doctor who fanfic) might suffice to alert readeer to the content. Ratings for ages might also be a good idea

678 Name: Moonlightshadow : 2010-02-03 12:44 ID:2rOAYR5+

I think it is a good idea to have such a title page.

Any sources for pictures etc may have to be noted on the inside cover or something though for copyrite etc.

Also it might be a good idea to include an age rating and any other inclusions in the fanfic/art i.e. mature activities etc.

And also, if someone finds a fic they really like then they may be able to request a second copy somehow, say via email or something as long as the author doesn't mind.

679 Name: Fee : 2010-02-03 13:10 ID:87N16ZqJ

What a lovely idea.
Though to an extent I agree with Lex, not everyone will want to participate in this. So making it compulsory or anything like that wouldn't be great.

Possibly there could be a requests list? so that people less confidant in their artistic skills could request others to make the covers for them?

680 Name: Endelvich : 2010-02-03 14:41 ID:c0POSc6n

Very nice idea; for me, it would definitely add a touch of individuality to a story.

681 Name: RoisinAnDubh : 2010-02-03 14:53 ID:5Q1y5dbE

I think this a brilliant idea, it gives the attendants of the gatherings a clear idea of what they are going to read. You could even put a short blurb on the front or back if they wish, about the story

682 Name: Dunabunk : 2010-02-05 13:23 ID:LrGBWmCg

It's a good idea but those people with very long fanfictions or many fanfictions may find it difficult to print out hundreds of pages especially in the current economic climate. A front cover or a blurb is a good idea.

683 Name: Lulu-fifi : 2010-02-06 04:47 ID:lx9cDZx3

me likey this idea. It woud definitly be a good way of getting more readers, and finding out which pairings etc...are popular. :)

684 Name: NaomiJayne : 2010-02-06 09:48 ID:+xdiI1ub

I like this idea to, I actually started this but not for the reason of giving it to people but mainly so when I'm writing the next chapter I don't have to look through my documents of find it on ff.net I can just look at my folder and look back over it. Also I'm always drawing pictures as it helps me get into my character more. (i get confused easily) and my having pictures and printed copies it makes it seem more organised.

685 Name: sarahliza : 2010-02-06 11:02 ID:v28MiIYV

That's a cool idea. Though we shouldn't really be judging a book by its cover...:P
It's a good point that people with fanfictions with hundreds of pages might not want to print theirs out. I like the idea of being able to make my story like a proper book, with a blurb that we can make a little longer than the space for summary they give us on fanfiction.

686 Name: bananapankaces : 2010-02-06 17:29 ID:Nhs3nDnG

Great idea,
Also having some pieces on hand for the less confident writers to look through might help gain confidence in there own work by which i mean that they might gain some deeper insight into the whole fanfiction area and be more willing to print off some of there stories for the next meeting.

689 Name: PandaChan13 : 2010-02-10 01:53 ID:k6cUAYGc

So yeah, I think it's an awesome idea :)

694 Name: Anonymous : 2010-02-10 15:22 ID:xT48t87K

Sounds like a good idea - perhaps the opportunity to exchange electronically, like on cd or something in case fanfics are particularly long and it would be too expensive/take too long to print out.

695 Name: NB : 2010-02-10 15:49 ID:mLIsO0NB

That is a pretty cool idea you have there, would give it all the more personal feel to it as well.

696 Name: ~Libby~ : 2010-02-10 15:54 ID:0cTwVlPL

I really like this idea. It would make a good topic for discussion at offline meetings.

697 Name: Jemma : 2010-02-11 02:23 ID:56lGDmPo

I agree it would look more professional and would perhaps encourage fanfiction writers to really focus on the wuality of writing. It could also integrate fanart as well, whihc would look great.

Also to agree with #702 Anonymous I think sending electronically would be a good idea as well, perhaps something like a PDF so texts couldn't be edited and could still look professional on a computer?

698 Name: Loveless-is-4ever : 2010-02-11 02:38 ID:tPD4IZP5

I think it6 is a good idea, because in stead of it just looking like a fanfiction it would actually look like a book and it would give new wrighters the confidence and ideas to do their own work with.

699 Name: Dying Kitty : 2010-02-13 14:25 ID:AVKYyAcU

Personally... no.

I find it easier to just scrawl a website address across someones face than spend hours printing out a story, writing a full disclaimer, backing it and finding cover art.

And thik about the trees. Poor trees.

I think it's a good idea in theory though.

Kitty.x.

700 Name: twistedkat : 2010-02-14 13:18 ID:bsH4xn99

It's a good idea. It's always useful to hear other people's thoughts of your work and idea's. It can be a bit of a pain to print it out, but it does look much better.

701 Name: eldradmustlive : 2010-02-14 14:30 ID:cHgcxnwF

I think it's a great idea, however, I do agree with dyingkitty about the usage of paper, after all we are supposed to be trying to be environmentally friendly, we'll just have to make sure that we are trying to be environmentally friendly in other respects. It is a good idea in principle though, and it would be a whole lot easier to read, but if there's just one copy printed out, then there could be a way of reading each others fanfic so everybody has one written by somebody at the meeting. Sorry I ramble on, need to stop doing that. Anyway, good idea!

702 Name: animechaser : 2010-02-15 06:39 ID:UamAey/v

I's disagree if it suddenly became mandatory but otherwise it's a good idea and woohoo for organizational skills.
I'm still fond of the electronics option but i really agree a meeting would benefit both.

Having the stories brought with a complete summary (name, genre..etc, whatever it tells you to put on ff.net) and bringing it with cover art could be the same or entirely different matters.

Professional or personal air, good things to add. And arranging another to do the cover for you, good connections going on.

Personally, I'd be a bit finicky about giving a fic of mine an art cover unless i believed they were absolutely compatible.

Also, on ff.net there has been an option for it. Authors can post covers on say.. Deviantart, then add a link to it on their profiles or the fic. It would be nice if the idea was more common but this didn't really kick off.
It'd be better if ff.net had an optional extendy thing on the site that could show the authors (optional) cover. But this could get abused. ff.net have fine summaries but they could also allow a blurb/acknowledgement(some really love their reveiwers)/notes thing get added.

Maybe people could take their stories but it could get brought up that they can also print off/take any fan art they may posess. They can point out if any fanart goes with a particular story they did.

It also promotes fanart, sorta - woot!

uh...me rambling on, heh...

703 Name: Silversaz : 2010-02-17 10:17 ID:9Wt+ny4B

I think it would be good idea- a bit like a book club but with your own writing.

However, I agree it would take up quite a lot of paper. If people wanted to read other people's writing and discuss it with them at the same time, possibly meeting in a library with access to computers would be a good idea. This way, everyone could read one person's fanfic and then discuss it as a group.

It would be nice to have professional looking front covers with your fanfics printed off, but this could be another option.

Saz

704 Name: doctorwhobeyond : 2010-02-18 13:44 ID:0Fb3uGEo

Hey, it's me. I think Jemma's comment actually took the words out of my mouth - it would encourage good presentation, more professionalism.

We have to be careful and remember that this is all just fanfiction, and these will not be able to make money, so if they're produced in bulk the paper amount thing is a concern.

Maybe group readings would be a good idea? Kinda like a book club? So people agree to meet however many times in a time range, prepare new fanfics, compare and rate ideas.

705 Name: Anonymous : 2010-02-18 14:23 ID:iIxZza1S

I would be thinking a sample, you wouldn't print out the whole fanfiction if it's multiple chapters, in that case you'd print one chapter, or your favorite parts, as sort of a sample, the front cover, and maybe a sheet or two bullet pointing or representing artistically aspects of the story if the attendee so wished.

706 Name: Anonymous : 2010-02-19 08:30 ID:IPMa4ogX

perhaps an idea could be if everyone at the meet-up prints off one copy of their story, then you could do a rota to pass that one copy round, either sending it in the post or exchanging them at the next meet-up - this way everyone's reading something different, everyone can give their opionion of it as it is sent round and it saves paper too (recyling it round the group's not bad either).

707 Name: Halfbloodprincess96 : 2010-02-19 13:25 ID:EOYjEdza

Hi!

I think this is a good idea, however, I do agree that paper and the environment would be something important to consider.

Maybe, instead of having a new cover for every story, there could be just one cover with the authors name on that they use for all their storys. It's n t a great idea, I know, but the best I can do.

708 Name: BloodredViolet : 2010-02-19 13:30 ID:EKivOaok

Hello sorry it took me so long to reply ^_^! but i do like the idea of printing your own cover art but im afraid i have to agree with the masses mainly because it would be a bit too difficult to either have enough paper to print it off or find cover art for it plus if say you live in a city like Hull (like i do) and have to get it too London then it becomes just an extra thing to carry whereas maybe sticking them on memory sticks and taking them may be a better idea

709 Name: x.fresh.hannah.x : 2010-02-19 15:35 ID:jkfGop3S

i think its a good idea to open up to people what ur story is about and to get a feel of how the writer writes and what there interested in. Also, different people are interested in differnt things so would open up people to what there interested in. But they should do it as a small sample fo the first chapter and if the person likes the story to have the web adress of where the story is and where they can read the rest of it online.

710 Name: Cyan : 2010-02-21 12:33 ID:AQuDw/ml

Seems like a good idea for those who wish to make their work look more professional and have a clear pride in their work, but like someone else said- it shouldn't be complusary if people don't wish to- it would be an inconvinience (sorry spelling today is a no-go). Would a cover really be a good idea though? there a plenty of fanfics where the author thinks they've done brilliantly but the story is awful. Would you really want people pushing badly written stories at you all the time, even if they did come in a pretty cover, and asking you what you think? It's a good idea for effect- but may end up being more hassle than it's worth- Your call though.

711 Name: Moose : 2010-02-24 09:20 ID:c9Wu1B5I

I think that as long as it's not too difficult for people, I don't see covers as a problem at all. Quite the opposite, for me. I mean, most people will be going to these gatherings with a bag, right? And how much weight will a few sheets of paper with a cover on be? (No offence to anyone writing novels and things that will make their arms fall off). But then again, I don't think it should be compulsory - it's not fair to, like, refuse to read someone's work just because they haven't got a cover!

And Cyan, I completely agree that there are many fanfics which just don't read well, but I don't think your view's fair. I mean, surely half the reason for having a meeting with like-minded people writing fanfics would be to find ways to improve your work and receive constructive criticism on it. So it wouldn't be fair to refuse to read it, regardless of the quality of writing. And the cover has nothing to do with that. But that's just my view - and I didn't mean to sound mean! sorry!

Also, it seems like a lot of people would have one-shots, drabbles or short stories - or at least people have mentioned this above. Surely in this case at least, using one cover for all of them (like a sort of portfolio) like the HalfBloodPrincess suggested would be a good idea.

The problem with using memory sticks like Violet suggested is that we'd have to meet somewhere with computers, or several people would have to bring a laptop. It's a lot easier and friendlier (I think) if people make the effort to print and then take a hard copy. But then again, printing it off really wouldn't be hard for me, so maybe I'm biased.

Sorry this is so long! Also, if people want cover art but can't draw themselves or whatever, would it be nice to see if anyone around here draws or something. With the internet, I'm sure people would be willing to do requests for fellow writers!

712 Name: Moose : 2010-02-24 09:22 ID:c9Wu1B5I

Oh, sorry. Post was too long. Does that count as vandalism? meep I didn't mean to!

713 Name: NewBirch : 2010-02-24 09:43 ID:hcg5wYY5

I agree that it might be quite difficult for people to print off their whole stories, but maybe if people just print off the first few chapters? Then people could get a taste for the stories without having to destroy rainforests.

714 Name: Moose : 2010-02-26 05:40 ID:WiDVxzjq

Oh yeah, I forgot the environmental problems. In that case, I agree with NewBirch - if your fic's really long, how about just printing off a few chapters? And remember, we can always print double-sided, which should save a few trees!

715 Name: Moose : 2010-02-26 05:56 ID:WiDVxzjq

Oh yeah, I forgot the environmental problems. In that case, I agree with NewBirch - if your fic's really long, how about just printing off a few chapters? And remember, we can always print double-sided, which should save a few trees!

716 Name: Anonymous : 2010-02-27 15:40 ID:omkShiAf

Instead of printing each story off with a seperate cover wouldn't it be easier to print each story off and put them in a ringbinder or something so that way you'd have all your stories in one place then everyone can see everything you've done.

717 Name: Zwee : 2010-02-28 10:47 ID:27UFmRUO

I think it's got to be optional. (For all the reasons mentioned above).

But you could always try emailing it to them and see what they've got to say about that. (Obviously there's the whole hard-to-read-on-a-computer business; but as long as you present it well and in a nice font it shouldn't be too much of a problem, surely?) You could always scan in a front cover or make one on the computer.

718 Name: spike.and.emmett.lover : 2010-02-28 12:19 ID:Ye+su67K

i think that it's a good idea, i have already made covers for some of my fanfic's. so even if you cant draw you can create one on the computer (which is what i normally do), i think that it's a really good idea to bring your fanfics with you, because some people (me) suck at writing summaries, so it'll be a better idea to share fanfiction

719 Name: Rachael : 2010-02-28 17:26 ID:N2TTaF+q

I really think its a good idea... to be honest as well printing the first 5 chapters off might be a good idea... if people want to find out the ending then they can log onto fanfic.net

720 Name: FoF : 2010-03-01 18:49 ID:QSMQ32YO

I think it's a good idea, but like Zwee said, it should be optional.
As it's been mentioned before, if it's a long story then I think only the first couple of chapters should be printed, and then people can look it up on a website or ask for it to be emailed if they want to read more.
But I like the idea - it gives the story more character.

721 Name: HFL : 2010-03-03 10:22 ID:rdGNPxAx

I think its a good idea to print off only the first few chapters because i haven't got enough printing paper to do more than that!!!
Also i reckon the front cover should have the link to your profile on it so they can see all the stories you have written :)

722 Name: Sakura-Biyori : 2010-03-03 10:34 ID:QdcAJEs9

If the story is really long, then I agree with printing off... Say... The first 10 chapters or something, but it really is up to the person that is the one printing it.
I do like the idea though. It could be interesting to see what people come up with as their front cover.

723 Name: Bionic Woman : 2010-03-03 10:56 ID:G0yG4WrK

Printing is great because if you aren't that good at explaing what your stroy is about they only have to read it.

I personally only need to read the first chapter if that dosent catch me then I wont bother with the rest of the story. So I reckon print no less two chapters.

The title page dosent have to a fancy picture it could just be a fancy font or fancy hand writing which ever is perfered. However, it dosen't have to be anything particulary special because you don't normally find them on a thread and the fiction will still appeal to the majority of readers.

724 Name: misswhiteblack : 2010-03-04 03:44 ID:vYt1kuJn

This is an interesting idea but as it has been pointed out before you'll have to be extremely careful with the copywright laws. You'll have to be very clever to box around them. If you are going to print something out you'll definitely need to include a disclaimer. It's probably the reason that fanfiction has never been printed before.

Still if this idea is looked into thoroughly I think it would be a good.

725 Name: BamfIsAwesome : 2010-03-04 11:41 ID:mAZBojHn

Wow, I think this is an awesome idea! I do really like it, there are quite a few people who draw pictures for their stories, and with some it would help to visualise OC's or certain places, or like one I've read, what you've done to the characters!

If it's short, yes post all of it. Of it's not, two or three chapters should be fine. I'm really liking what you've got going here, I'm glad that someone's out there thinking of all these things. And I'm still flattered that my counsel is sought concerning your ideas; you are pretty much a genius as far as I'm concerned :)

726 Name: Luckii : 2010-03-04 13:13 ID:S0EgTCgW

I like this idea, it will be more formal way of presenting work we are proud of and getting feed back.

I quite like design art so it would be fun creating something personal, but I also agree with the length barriers if we are reading it in person and also making sure ideas aren't stolen or used by others

727 Name: Elizawriter : 2010-03-05 03:35 ID:Y0oJSrex

I think that it is definitely a good idea.
For example I only have one piece of fanfiction but it was quite well received.

If we had a body of work we were going read and discuss, that would be another part of growing with the culture and would be really useful to helping other people improve their work.

Like a workshop for Creative Writers.

Eliza :)

728 Name: Becci : 2010-03-05 07:52 ID:Z3xeqYb8

It is a very good idea, especially if some people have trouble remembering fic titles and want to read more of a long fiction and forget to write down the title or author name, a visual stimulus may help to jog their memory.

729 Name: Fenella : 2010-03-05 13:21 ID:OkgUi0rt

Although making the front cover for it would be extra effort it would be worth it :)

Hey Yoshino, I think this is a brilliant idea!!!! It would be a great way to showcase fan-art and fanfiction in one work and it makes a work look more professional as well - something to be proud of rather than just a plain word document!!!

Thanks for sharing your ideas with me on FF.net and for telling me about your site

I think that it's a good, practical idea, and also people who are really serious or interested about fanfiction could have a 'signiture' logo or image etc. which could be on the front cover, so that if they are well known at gatherings/ the fanfic world, then people can recognise them.

738 Name: Nefieslab : 2010-03-07 14:03 ID:tvUMECV7

hehe, I've never been good at drawing so I'd have to either get a willing artist or simply use my logo. That leads me to a point. Would the cover be allowed to be an image taken from somewhere on the internet (with correct referencing for the artist or website of course)?

739 Name: mikirobbo : 2010-03-08 11:53 ID:tXhD2MQv

I have to admit i've already done this. When i finished my first fanfic story i printed it all out on A5 paper so it would look like a book. I even added a contents and acknowledgements page. It looks amazing and is something i can keep and share with others. I would recommend that everyone has a go, although printing can take a while. My story is 357 pages long and took about 3 hours to print as i wanted it to be double sided like a book.

740 Name: Razcoolzle : 2010-03-09 10:38 ID:Giv4oqiT

Yeah ths idea is good because its quite simple so it wouldn't have many problems but it could have a good impact on the meetings

741 Name: Lunadisangue : 2010-03-11 13:03 ID:R36phVAz

I think it's an interesting idea and I like it. I'm not very good at drawing. I'm not sure that I'd ever put any of my stories in actual book format though so I'm not entirely sure if its for me.
It's a really nice idea though.

742 Name: xxxLoonyxxx : 2010-03-13 05:47 ID:4nu5FfpI

Nice idea, though I'm not a superb artist, I'd love to do that! I'm not sure if I really would put my stories into book form either though.

Personally I think its a good idea, lol. I always like the idea of owning a real copy of something too (like a CD instead of downloading) so I think I'd really prefer to have an actual printed version of something I've done to show someone rather than give them a link or something, lol.

Plus, this would give the reader opportunity to tell you what they think straight away, rather than having to wait to get to a computer and do it.

In fact, when I first started doing fanfics, me and my friend printed one copy of chapters as they were done, and I thought that was like a really good thing to do. I dunno why but it makes it seem better, lol.

And besides, trees might be an issue but theres nothing to stop people using paper that comes from sustained forests or anything like that, lol.

749 Name: XbAbY RoSe CuLlEnX : 2010-03-15 12:54 ID:yDvTXNxG

I think its a great idea, i already do and when people come round they always spot it and think it's like a real book. i always keep hard copies because although there might not be mistakes i always find things that maybe could be worded different to make more interesting. i think its a good idea because it makes me feel as if i had produced a real book.

750 Name: blairwitch : 2010-03-15 14:28 ID:6paAnPF2

Good idea. It will make it a lot easier. People wont have to go looking and it can help everyone get a feel for different styles of writing. It will also help with constructive advice.

751 Name: LFTD : 2010-03-16 06:47 ID:SMypnRyA

I think it's a great idea.

I'm really into my art so it would be fun designing a front cover. I'm not sure what i'd draw but I would give the idea a go.

Having a front cover would make it clearer, I think for people to recognise other authors fan works. Which can only be a good thing.

752 Name: xdrop-of-golden-sunx : 2010-03-16 14:14 ID:9dLPER3+

having a front cover would be good as it makes everyone's work more individual than it already is.

Love that idea!

753 Name: the-wierd-1 : 2010-03-17 12:31 ID:QcO5b3bi

That's a really good idea
One question.... when does it start?

754 Name: EtakSppe : 2010-03-17 13:18 ID:hZr5c/dP

Hey, in reply to your message on Fanfiction...
I think this is a great idea! In addition to the whole "preferring something to hold" argument made earlier, it also means your story is accessable to everyone - people who don't have or know how to use a computer can read it too!

755 Name: Rabbitslikecarrots : 2010-03-17 13:49 ID:I+X0RFS3

I've just printed off my own front cover and will soon start drawing some pretty pictures on it coz I think this is an excellent idea and I wanted to try it right away. It will be so much easier to pick up and read fics as well if you can plainly see their titles - you'll know straight away what it is and if you want to read it.
Plus having pictures - maybe even fanart - will make you want to read it more (well it would for me)

756 Name: Conceal a Deadily-Poisen : 2010-03-18 13:02 ID:FHAuU13f

The Idea is very interesting for those with a artistic drawing streek.

I for one would find it very entertaining.

I'd after try this out sometime.

If the person is very artistic perhaps they could do a picture of a scene for each chapter? I mean I would.

757 Name: In Need Of Slash Fix : 2010-03-19 07:55 ID:gzXmKoH7

I think that would be a great idea.. and the one about picturing a scene for each chapter. =]

758 Name: Clear as snow : 2010-03-20 05:44 ID:tzgaatuU

I think that this is actually a good idea, I think it gives people the chance not only for other people but also for themselves to appreciate their own fanfic :)

759 Name: Gin : 2010-03-20 07:49 ID:Ze9A43mC

Sounds like a good idea. Although it may be a little more difficult for the artistically challenged (comme moi) but all the same, it'll make one's work a little more personal than just a pile of printed sheets ;]

760 Name: Black.Rose : 2010-03-20 13:36 ID:62Gb+7lt

I think it's a nice idea. I actually do this occasionally when I'm sharing my fanfics with friends who enjoy having actual papers to read rather than just a computer screen. Pictures are always enjoyable. If people do fanart for your story, then that's also really nice to include in the booklet.

It's also nice, because people can write in the book their criticism, grammar mistakes they see, etc. I add a blank page at the end and ask anyone who reads to give concrit on that.

761 Name: ABrokenHeartSomeTwistedMinds : 2010-03-20 14:11 ID:GWtbNDnj

Hey! it's HealMyBleedingHeart -but I prefer the above given Penname, and I love this idea, I think it's amazing, it gives people a chance to show others their work, and then the covers would make it more personal, and show each persons unique style, and if you can't draw -like me- then you could make a banner and print it of if you wanted to.
I just..i love it!
I also think it would give better insight to the story itself, and just..bah, I can't explain it properly, but I love it.

But yeah, it should be optional

763 Name: flameshameful72 : 2010-03-20 17:46 ID:J1ls3HIc

yeah thats a great idea and obviously people can compare notes as well with other authors

764 Name: Jazzola : 2010-03-21 07:38 ID:xnKMVVNN

This seems a good idea to me. Some other contributions from people seem good as well.
I live in the West Midlands, as I said, and the nearest big city would be Birmingham or Worcester. I doubt there are enough people in those cities for you or someone else to start a fanfic group there, but I would love to join one, as long as it wasn't going to clash with my other things. (Busy timetable...)
Reply on fanfiction.net, I'd like this idea to be made real.
Jazzola :)

765 Name: YukonGhost : 2010-03-21 10:13 ID:pKDEgwfy

I think this is a good idea, this will help to make fan works more of a physical bit of reading, rather than purely online. Also, maiking your own front covers sound kinda fun too ^_^ he he

766 Name: star95 : 2010-03-21 12:27 ID:VxizqFGK

i think this is a good idea.
i also think that i would make it seem more book like rather than something you would find on the internet.

767 Name: Sarah Paradox : 2010-03-21 13:10 ID:7j+Tp7GO

I think this sounds like a great idea. It can show off writers work and their artistic skills!
It would also give the writers work a more individual feel and make the pieces special to the writer XD :D

768 Name: tilldeathdouspart789 : 2010-03-21 15:04 ID:BE3SSDkf

I think that is a really great idea! I can draw, so I'll be able to do a good front cover! I might do that to show my mates at school. (They may even consider to form a Fan-fic offline group! :D) I live in Banff area in Scotland and I live in the country, so creating a small social group with my mates will be great!

769 Name: Prof.Ryoko : 2010-03-22 08:10 ID:zgmoo2AX

It's a good idea, actually tbh I've already got my sister drawing up illustrations for my fanfic. I'm planning to put it all together in a pdf. when I've finished writting the story.

770 Name: Desperate For Attention : 2010-03-22 10:46 ID:PWOXiRvv

I think it's a good idea, it makes it look more official. As if you are presenting a real book rather than a fanfiction. I have a friend who would love to draw the covers for my stories, just because she likes to show off her skills. xD

771 Name: S : 2010-03-23 11:35 ID:RNklmjBs

Yeah a great Idea, I love doing front covers!!

772 Name: tilldeathdouspart789 : 2010-03-23 13:12 ID:uRd9j1jE

I've just drawn a front cover for 'Without you', my completed Bleach fan-fic. I would like to show you, but sadly I don't have a scanner... :(

773 Name: XxCryingEyesxX : 2010-03-23 14:12 ID:PWrYly8/

The idea is great, it sounds interesting, I draw (well people tell me I can draw) but I get a bit self-concious about my drawings so I don't often show them, but I would love to draw a Front Cover for my fanfic and possibly others if they wanted me to. Currently I'm writing a Twilight fanfic called 'To Love Again' and I've started to write a one-shot that I thought of then couldn't get rid of the idea so that should be up in the next few days, it will be called 'Love Never Lost', its also Twilight.

I live just outside London, in the borough of Waltham Forest.

774 Name: Hannah : 2010-03-24 03:34 ID:gb6Yi4ZM

It seems like a decent idea with regards to having something more physical to read, rather than getting eye strain on the internet all the time :) Forgive me for being serious, but this is where you can get into the disclaimer/tv show or book rights if these things were to fall into the wrong hands. Im probably just being over-cautious here but that's just my view on it.

775 Name: Firefly Princess x : 2010-03-24 14:27 ID:LUv/uXfn

Ooooh. This idea is great- it would make me feel like my fanfiction was a proper book. It wouls also make everyone's fics more appealing to others, I think. What Hannah said, "This is where you can get into the disclaimer/tv show or book rights if these things were to fall into the wrong hands." This could be true, but I'm sure you wouldn't be told off as long as you didn't try to sell it or pass it off as your own idea.

776 Name: Hannah : 2010-03-25 02:03 ID:gb6Yi4ZM

That's true.

777 Name: chloemai-nessie : 2010-03-26 12:54 ID:h/qpmin8

I think this is a great idea :) Personally, I've already got a front cover. My friends at school demand updates alot, so usually I print them out and hand them to them when they arent complete, because my friends can use force to get me to write xD

778 Name: Hito-Hito : 2010-03-27 00:37 ID:Y36Mpote

I think it's an awsome idea! I love drawing so it wont be difficult and it makes it look more offical and more appealing to the eye, right?
BTW if anyone can't draw to well and wants me to one for then, just give me a call, 'kay?

I love the idea, I will start designing covers imediately!
If only I had written enough fanfics for me to do covers for...
Perhaps you could use that at offline meetings, someone designs a cover and someone else writes a fanfic to go with it!
I think it could work..

I do this all the time. Then I got bored one day and made up a fake barcode to add to each cover. And a printing company that I made up (I actually had to make a company up for one of my final print production classes during my last year in college).

I started doing it for the purpose of printing and binding a finished copy of a fanfic or collection.

807 Name: IrisawaAmaterasu : 2011-03-18 20:56 ID:44XGeRoF

Honestly, I was going to do this, but I figured that it'd be way too much with seventeen stories. D=
I now consider doing this when I finish Sen No Yoru Wo Koete. (:<

808 Name: J.E.McCormickGal : 2011-03-22 13:11 ID:nxra5FDW

I was actually messing around with this yesterday xD
I'd probably only do it for longer fanfictions, but I must say that for an offline meeting, it would be great, making it almost like a little novella-book.
I wouldn't print my fanfictions out regularly (mainly, I don't want my parents finding one and deciding to look through it) but for the purpose of offline meetings I might consider.

This sounds like a really nice idea. I like doing fan art for my stories from time to time, so drawing up an official cover sounds like good fun. For longer stories I might like to split them into several books covering different arcs, like a series.

(Wow, spamarific replies up there...)
