Worse Version of your story getting more reviews? (12)

So... Me and my friend are co-writing a story on fanfiction.net called "Cannibal" in the Hetalia fandom, and strangely enough, after we posted that a lot of other people came out with Cannibal!Feli Itacest stories.

There's one particular one and it's not too good, but it has all these amazing reviews on it... The chapters are short and barely descript, there's no setting of the mood, or tone, it's... Just not that good.
It has about... 36 reviews on it so far with 9 chapters, which should indicate a good story, and judging from the reviews it's good.

Blah, check it out for yourselves... Seriously

I stopped reading some fandoms, because I was so irritated that some stories had loads of reviews, but were pap, where other stories were awesome and had a lot of effort put in, but because they had more plot and less sex, got no reviews.

I've come across that a lot while reading through some of the fandoms. It's ridiculous that people look for just sex scenes, most of the time they are written horribly, rather than going for stories that are so well written with details and a lot of effort. It's a shame people do that, but I guess that's how things go. Just have to be thankful for the ones who take the time to look for good stories.

I suppose it is inevitable that people on the internet are mainly out for free porn. I don't mind smut or sex scenes, but I just wish people wouldn't say terrible stories are 'amazing' when they aren't.

>>1 - I think I've found your fanfic and if I have the correct one you are actually averaging at one more review then the person who is writing the poorer written storyline. If that story had nine chapters too then it could possibly be at 45 reviews rather then the 39 this person has.

That said, I can tell you one of the reasons badly written fanfic tends to get more reviews then the really good fanfic besides the one moonphase and Lauren pointed out. Badfic writers tend to update a lot faster then the writers who do a good job. They can seem like they are getting a ton of reviews at times when their average is actually pretty low. Other times they are getting a ton of reviews because they update at such a high rate they keep dragging the readers in and badfic can be addicting to the untrained reader.

>>3 & >>4 - I thankfully write theoretical work rather then romance desptie the fact I do dabble a bit. I know that if a theory is well liked and few people write for it people will jump on ANY fanfic for that theory. Theoretical work tends to also be a lot easier to stomach even when the writing is poor because the basic theory... when the theory is actually good... will stay the same.

That said, when it comes to the romance fanfics there is I think another problem that feeds into how many reviews a story will get. The other thing I think rabid fans will look for other then "sex" is to have their pairing validated in a fanfic as canon fact. You see this less with pairings that are set in stone as canon or non canon. It occurs less too when the pairing has actual hints that it might become canon. It is REALLY bad when the pairing hasn't been declared canon but shows MAJOR signs of never being made canon.

I commented on this in the cliches you want to see done well thread, but this tends to result in stories that feature a love triangle between A, B and C. B and C are already together and work really well together. A comes along or comes back and because A & B are true love it breaks up B & C because B being with C is concidered cheating on A by the fans of A & B even when B & C are officially dating or married and A & B are not at the point in time.

>>8 what do you mean by 'theoretical work'? Is that like, when fans have a theory on why something happened in their fave show/anime/story, and the fic explores that theory?

Sorry if I am being dense right now -_-

>>9 - Some theoretical work has to deal with why things happen but others deal with what could possibly happen. A lot of these because AU. For the Bleach fandom I work big time with the theories of Isshin being Toshiro's former taicho and Gin+Ran=Toshiro. I also work with the idea that Isshin is a former Shiba a bit and I am likely to use the theory that Ichigo's mother is related to Uryu and his father in some manner.
