Long Chapters vs Short Chapters (15)

When reading a really long story, do you prefer it to be 1 long chapter or lots of short chapters? And why??
And what do you think is the optimum chapter length?

I prefer shorter chapters - for the Doorstop, I keep it to a strict limit of six to twelve pages on Word. It's far more user-friendly, for much the same reason that 'wall of text' posts are discouraged, and makes it much easier to know where you left a story if you're reading it in multiple sessions.

Also, it can serve something of a narrative purpose, allowing you to deliver regular cliffhangers and revelations that keep your readers hooked.

I agree with Iaculus. As far as I'm concerned, 2000-4000 words is the optimal chapter length. Long enough that they have some heft to them, but short enough that you can read them in one sitting.

I like chapters that are short and sweet. I'm talking 2500 words maximum. Often I am on some sort of deadline, so I don't have time to read for ages,(at least not fanfiction any way.) I also think it's harder to read for a long period of time on the screen than it is on paper.
Of course, if a chapter has almost nothing in it (plot wise or character development wise) that's annoying, but that can happen on long chapters as well as short.

I write between 1000 and 2500 words per chapter (3000 max). The length I write is the length I prefer to read. Chapters that are too short are irritating because one has to frequently navigate to another page. Too long, and one feels pressured to finish the chapter in one sitting (owing to not wishing to lose one's place, and also for the satisfaction of one's obsessive-compulsive streak).

Mais hey, for I normally read and write one-shots.

I feel longer chapters can really emerge readers into them, so I don't mind long chapters. Things above 10k I might not be able to read all in one sitting, but I can really get into those stories. Writing wise though, mine are normally 2-3k, but I don't have a set rule for how long or short they have to be.

I prefer longer chapters, as long as it's not anything above 15,000 words. I like the minimum to be at least 1,000 words though and preferably 2,500.

To me, really short chapters can be annoying. It's often 'read for a few minutes - click - read for a few minutes - click and all too often they cut off before you can get into them.

I think 3000 - 4000 words is about right. If you loose your place, have to go out... etc. Its easy to find again. A short chapter <1000 is just anoying! especially when theres only about 15 chapters in total! To short!

I find it amusing that both those spambots are (in) Japanese. How are they even finding this site?

Anyway. I prefer longer chapters no matter if the fic is long or short. It just makes it seem all so much more worthwhile; it's more satisfying to sit down and read one long chapter than three short ones.

That said, there is such a thing as too long. Around two to three thousand words tends to be a good length. (Though I did read this one fic called Soldier of Spira that had absolutely enormous chapters. And it was fantasmazing.)
