Ungrateful? (39)

1 Name: Vic Taylor : 2010-02-19 23:44 ID:S7u9vlVq

Just left a concrit for one of the multi-chapter stories I'm reading, saying I thought one of the characters was acting OOC and why.

I got quiet a rude reply back, saying that the writer didn't write for concrit, denying that the character was acting OOC, and that she was doing it because it didn't happen on the show and never would (which is a pretty good definition of OOC I think).

She also said, and I quote, "I wouldn't recommend sticking with this story (or any of my other stories)".

I was a little shocked to say the least, and really haven't got a response. :(

Has anyone else had a review reply like this?

2 Name: セーラーエリスは刀の女ですか。 : 2010-02-20 01:02 ID:u7n9UXB8

my review:

>I am afraid to ask but I will ask anyway. Have you seen the Japanese Original episodes?? let's leave the Seiya thing to the side since a lot of fans believe that Haruka hates her so I am kind of Used to it. Haruka NEVER EVER called Usagi "moon face"[in the original] also in this story Haruka seems to be a bit rude with Usagi. No matter what, in both Amine and Manga Haruka was never Rude with Usagi. Only in the Dub actually all those things happened. anyway it is your story and you write it they way you like, I am just a bit turned off, with all the dub references that's all

her reply:

>well this was my useing sailor moon characters plus in english i heard serena? be called moon face by amara? the question marks because i'm used to the japanese version so i'm rusty on english and from what i know haruka and were suppose to be on bad terms.

my reply to that:

>yes in english Usagi was called moon face by Haruka this is what i said at the end of my review, that all those happened in the DUB(a.k.a. north american version]. Haruka called usagi a lot of things in Jpn original but not moon face. she called her "koneko-chan" (a.k.a: kitten) she called her Odango-Atama (a.k.a: Odango-head) and in the manga she Calles her "Odango-chan".

her reply?

>it's just a little hard for me to get this right

3 Name: Bola : 2010-02-20 03:30 ID:D3KxE+qO

Oh, yes.

I once reviewed a girl to whom I nicely said that her characters seemed very much OOC and that perhaps a beta would help her through the little grammatical and spelling mistakes that seemed to drag someoen off the story. I included that I found it a very nice idea and except for the few little oopsies well written. Only that maybe she could make her chapters longer.

I got back:
they're not. whatever. it's MY story. i'm not gonna listen to you.

And then I sent back something along the lines of:
I was just giving you my honest review on your story, in which I tried to give you some constructive criticism. I would like to believe every author has space to improve something about his or her work and most authors would be happy to get it, but apparently you're not one of them and I shall remind myself that reviews are not welcome with you.

and then she sent back:
i'm just a new author, okay?? sjeez, of course reviews are accepted. man...

and then i sent back:
oh, the joy of being a young writer. all of us have started there and all of us have most likely have shit on them from less friendly readers than me who just told you to go kill yourself.

and then she sent back:
okay.......................................................

So apparently, she was a thirteen-year-old who thought she could outsmart me, that she could outsmart everyone. That only she knew how to write a good story.

at 3, Thats terrible! New writers especially need the concrit. Well, most anyway. Mind, i remember my firt real constructive review and while meaning to thank them for it, it seemed i was trying to defend myself. :P i was young, i was foolish! I was also terrible with words and must have sounded proper pissed. :/

Actually, i don't think I ever had the problem - if anything, I would be the one going OOC. And I never quite minded before - I write crack, and crack is tough without OOCiness.

@>>2 : Geez, I don't see what's difficult in it. But just a thing: sometimes, people don't watch the subbed version so they obviously can't know it. I admit it's irking but maybe she just didn't see why you were telling her in a 'wth are you saying anyway?'-kinda way. And my english has to be crap because I barely understand her first reply.

@>>3 : Reviews, not concrit. Some need to flatter their ego and then, they would just go and rant at how just awesome they are. They just don't see the point at the moment but actually, I never got actual 'concrit' - like, nothing really detailed or anything - on any of my stories and now, I just feel like being a bad writer. (I might as well be^^)
Anyway, one day she'll see a REAL flamer and this time, I'd be curious to see how she'd react. Badly.

@>>4 : I guess that when you are younger, you always sounds defensive in some way. I would never know, I was 'old' when I started posting (read: 17).

My gosh, you like those guys in Van Helsing (movie).Flame them? You sure have plenty of time on your hands to go and flame people. Nah, it's better to sit down and wait for someone to do it - like a real, trolly flamer. evil smirk

lol Tristana that's the point she claimed to have watched the original version.
and I'll be a bit bitter here, but in the Sailor moon fandom, who ever is not aware of what is going on in the original version, is condemned to butcher the show in a fanfic. Sailor Moon eng Dub was one of the worst Dubs in anime history! :P

9 Name: sharingansupergirl : 2010-02-21 07:04 ID:4xCLQw8y

@ Tristana, I guess. I remember thinking that maybe if I explained what I was doing they might reply and gimme a few pointers with the added knowledge. And since when was 17 old? Silly girl. :P

I don't actually flame, as it's against my nature to be evil and condemn a fic to die. Sometimes, though, I do just pray someone else does. :( Especially when the writer refuses to take advice nicely... Gosh, I sound mean.

10 Name: moonphase9 : 2010-02-22 02:46 ID:cRohhAjE

Sometimes I do not give concrit if I think the person is someone who only wants praise and love. Luckily, I've never had someone being stupid about any concrit I have gave.
@ 3, that person sounds like an idiot. Hopefully they're just a self-important kid who will eventually grow up and relax a little.
I've never actually flamed anyone (*laughs*) but whenever people say the term, Van Helsing is what I think of!

11 Name: Tristana : 2010-02-22 05:14 ID:FIphqp8m

@ Sharingandsupergirl > Alright... I don't flame either... I wish I could. But I can't. The closest thing to flame I ever did - as in, destroying a fanfic - was when I corrected one of my friend's fic. She was upset because I 'rewrote' almost all her sentences.^^

Girl? Who do you call so young she could wear diapers still? (Too much FMA does that to people). I admit I'm silly though.^^

@ セーラーエリスは刀の女ですか。 , the worst? Oh my... I wouldn't dare and think about French dubs - those are like... 1000000x lamer than English dubs.

@ Moonphase > ^^ Or - just thought about it - T-Bird's crew in the Crow. 'Fire it up!!!' hum...

>>11 France really dubs everything. and I remember reading that Sailor Moon's french dub was really bad as well.
they had Haruka being a ... man...

13 Name: Tristana : 2010-02-22 10:20 ID:FIphqp8m

>>12 That they do. And most dubs are crap. Though the FMA one was a cool one - and, unlike the US one, Envy WAS male in our dub.^^

But I do admit they can such big time - I once stumbled on Naruto on TV and I was like: OMG!

14 Name: sharingansupergirl : 2010-02-22 10:52 ID:OfVM6AsW

@Tristana: I hope your friends alright. :S FMA is just so awesome. Serious, I ordered the whole lot online, even thought I... only watched about six episodes prior to it. The best spend of money ever! I tend to watch them all in Japanese with the subtitles, thought Vic Mignogna ain't that bad in his job... and now I know Envy's voiced by a male... :D

@Moonphase: That's the attitude that makes me want to give concrit the most, but sometimes (and I hate this) their story isn't that bad, so anything I could pick on just sounds... so petty. :(

@SeraEris (if that's incorrect, please tell me) Now I've heard she was voiced by a man, I really want to watch it... :P

15 Name: Iaculus : 2010-02-22 11:49 ID:hE55IazO

>>13 Though the first anime is rather more... definite, I might point out tht not even the writer of the original manga knows what Envy's true gender is.

With that in mind, anything goes, especially when they get around to casting... them for Brotherhood's dubs.

16 Name: Lupa Dracolis : 2010-02-22 12:24 ID:gbseNjJ3

I thought Envy was a hermaphrodite? Being made of both men and women...

17 Name: Iaculus : 2010-02-22 12:30 ID:hE55IazO

Sort of. It's complicated. For a start, there's a 'core' Envy under all the gribbly ex-humans, which seems to have even less in the way of a gender. I guess it's a question of what shape it's in/who it's imitating/how much of its personality is derived from the people it's absorbed.

>>14 yap you got my name right don't worry.
as for SM well when she was Sailor Uranus she sure had female voice, I have no idea though what voice she had as a civilian. :s

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sb0kSwZ52sI
that's her attack in 16 languages [including french] :s

19 Name: Tristana : 2010-02-22 18:37 ID:mw0pHeAR

@ SeraEris: I would never understand why do they feel the need of translating it... Geez, the attack in French sounds... ewwww...

@ Sharingandsupergirl: She is - actually, was pretty happy that I did all the job, even though I couldn't prevent her character from being one of the biggest Mary Sue I ever met - she didn't even made an OC, using herself as a chara and several of her friends - including me. Let's say it was a payback.

@ Iaculus: Isn't Vyvy supposed to be the son of Dante, which would make him a man in the first place? I'm too lazy to go through the whole thing again, don't kick me.
Anyway: Envy kicks asses. End.

20 Name: Iaculus : 2010-02-22 18:43 ID:hE55IazO

That was only in the first anime, as mentioned. The manga and Brotherhood are a bit different.

>>19 I really don't see any reason in dubs either, ESPECIALLY when they CAN'T do it right.
Sailor Moon due to some "extremes"[for society] like homosexuality, incest, transgenderism, death, use of terms as "Messiah" "holy grail" "Messiah of silence" etc, it was butchered to no end. Zoisitto was turned into a woman because he said "I love you" to his lover[another man], Haruka and michiru were turned to "cousins" because lesbianism was too much for them, and well technically they made that worst because they characters were flirting so it was like cousins in love[incest:P] and another gay man was turned into woman, but he had a scene where he was only into his boxers and there were no boobs [ahahahha] confusion? I was really confused for some of them as a kid. especially with the two male characters who turned into woman. but it was okay for them a girl to kiss a horse! [because pegasuses are good! and it was a male pegasus].
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZuBGRYoT24 that vid just explains everything about my fav couple :D, needless to say that the director of SM instructed the voice actresses of Haruka and michiru to play them as if they were a married couple.

@SeraEris, *gasps* Look at the size of those skirts! DREADFUL! Nah, Thanks for the link, I had a few laughs.
By the way, sounds like they really butchered SM.

23 Name: セーラーエリスは刀の女ですか。 : 2010-02-23 13:18 ID:gMQGclLf

sure they did, I had a rant in that thread about the butchering

a really long post ahahahah

by the way the skimpy skirts ;D allow better movement when the characters fight and also really nice pantie shots :D

Oh my gosh, uber long rant. The dubbing is just that terrible, huh? *laughs* 'Fraid I'm one of those old-fashioned types that like to make young girls feel awkward at flashing their knickers. Shame on you, panty-fiend! They're just too young to be offering themselves for porn. Even in anime. ESPECIALLY in Anime.

Anyways, back onto topic, have you ever come across AN's at the bottom that say things like "don't like, don't bother reviewing" meaning they only expect positive results?
Also, if you do give advice in a review, does anyone expect a reply from the writer? Sometimes people get completely ignored when they construct; I'm wondering if a reply sometimes means they got your message.

26 Name: セーラーエリスは刀の女ですか。 : 2010-02-23 14:30 ID:gMQGclLf

I do expect replies when I review that they never come.
I do reply all my registered reviews! with just a thanks or an explanation

27 Name: Vic Taylor : 2010-02-24 03:13 ID:S7u9vlVq

I kinda expect a reply if I review. If anyone favourites, alerts, or reviews my stories I always send them a little thank you PM. Like, if they can be bothered to do whatever to my story, I can damn well be bothered to say thanks, you know?

28 Name: RayRay : 2010-02-24 09:16 ID:GDtKpI15

I always reply to the signed reviews, always, even if they've just said something like "love it" and not said why. I do appreciate it.

If it's not signed, then I can't do much, but once I start posting multichapters I'll put out a general thankyou to everyone who's reviews and/or alerted/favourited.

29 Name: Bola : 2010-02-26 16:03 ID:D3KxE+qO

-nods- I mostly reply on my signed reviews, and if someone is so utterly talking rubbish and needs some serious arguments against, then I'll do the effort to search for him or her when not signe,d too. For example, when someone tells me 'ur storie sux, ho.' Then, well... He or she shall never call anyone a 'ho' again. I don't threat anyone. I put up arguments I'm sure respondents won't be able to reply anything on, and are fundated so that they are rendered speechless with truth. It's one of the good things about having learned how to write 'scientifically fundated assignments' on methodology of cyberpest studies.

30 Name: RayRay : 2010-02-26 19:32 ID:k3ASPEyt

Haha wow, I just reply telling them that if they're going to review with a comment such as the one they left, then clearly their lack of knowledge of the english language, should be a clear reason for me to not take them seriously.

31 Name: Hex3618 : 2010-02-27 08:49 ID:ZuaYJt+n

See, I'm not so sure...I feel awkward sending a PM to someone with a review that's about 2 words long. I don't know, may be something to do with my social awkwardness :P

Though I got a review that was about 800 words long...I mean how could I NOT reply to that? :P Usually I'll reply to someone who has obviously thought out their review, or has given me some advice on improvement, but usually I just thank all the readers and alerters etc. in general in the A/N.

32 Name: Anon : 2010-03-21 01:07 ID:SR+DWd9n

I almost have the opposite problem; I don't think my writing is that good, and would like to improve, but I've never received any critiscm. Although that could be that most Gleeks are too nice to say something unpleasant...

33 Name: Danibear423 : 2010-04-08 07:26 ID:ilQP7JQ1

No one gives me constructive critisism, though I wish they did, it gets frustrating.

34 Name: k : 2010-04-08 09:19 ID:Z3T2VR24

but what if your story has a lot off reviews and alerts then you will spend hours thanking everyone and not writting an update which is what everyone wants.

i've read some really good fics that have been flamed and i always get really annoyed and start spamming flamers for people i don't even know but i adore concriters and do try to offer honest-gentle- concrit where possible but some writers are really big babies

i say when (for twilight)alice squeals OMG rather than Oh My God please don't repeat this as it's grammatically incorecct and i either get totally blanked or a nice Pm telling me i'm a pedantic b**** because the authour is such a child they can't swear properly and have a limited vocab... very nice but then the icing ob the cake- the author actually asked for concrit...

i always put a little message that flames won't be tolerated of my fics and that concrit is always welcome and it seems to work... i don't think i've ever been flamed yet.
