How did you discover Fanfiction? (100)

1 Name: NewMagicWeaver : 2009-12-10 12:17 ID:ykRfYOGC

I'm just curious about how people discovered fanfiction.
I went to this random Vampire Writing Club in Durham (North-East of England incase anyone doesn't know)
Someone wrote loads of fanfiction and gave everyone the website. It was cool. I wasn't interested in writing anything for it, but when my new friend asked me to read her story, I visited Fanfic for the frst time. I read her story and looked at the other stories besed on my favourite books (Night World by L.J.Smith) and Charmed stories. It was fab! I signed up the next day, I think, and I started writing things for fanfic.
This was only about a month ago, lol.
Also, one of my friends wrote fanfiction, so I kinda knew what it was before the Vampire Writing Club, I just didn't know about the website.

So how did everyone else discover fanficion?

2 Name: Beth : 2009-12-10 12:23 ID:CFdsITvx

I was eight years old. I had just become a (big) fan of Tomb Raider and I wrote a tonne of stories about Lara and her adventures. Then came along Lemony Snicket and Harry Potter and stuff. Yeah. So that's how I discovered fanfiction.

3 Name: Tenshi-chan : 2009-12-10 12:26 ID:RDyikmzf

4 Name: Smile-J : 2009-12-11 12:13 ID:m8GL514g

A friend emailed me a Harry Potter story for my boys. I had to read it to check suitability but it was to 'old' for them. I searched for other stuff and found fanfic but I seem to have got stuck in Twilight - not that I'm complaining, I prefer some of the fic to the original :)

5 Name: Me, Myself and I : 2009-12-11 19:43 ID:5gZ0tEZx

One of my old friends suggested it a while back, and I just found it written down on a slip of paper a couple of months ago and decided to investigate. I'm now hooked.

I hade an operation last January and, while I was off school for recovery, I was browsing the internet. It just happened that I stumbled across the word 'fanfiction'. Immediately, I became interested, so I searched on Google "Tails fanfic" (because I'm a big Sonic fan :P) and the first story that came up was "Lethal Mutation". Since then, 11 months later, I've been hooked!

10 Name: Sabulana : 2009-12-17 09:05 ID:5sZZuMgP

I discovered fanfiction while browsing a Rufus Shinra fansite years ago. I had started off looking for Sephiroth, then saw the link to the Rufus site and found the fanfiction on there. The first story I ever read turned out to be Rufus/Tseng yaoi smut fic. I have been hooked on fanfiction ever since. Not long after than, I found fanfiction.net but it was some time before I gave writing fanfiction a try and signed up.

I wasnt sure if it was true so I searched and found many, many stories on ff.net written on BTVS. Since then I've been hooked! I still dont know I Joss Whendon said that, but it opened a world of online fiction to me!

15 Name: Rachel Cabbit : 2009-12-19 12:15 ID:4vQBWSA0

Waaay back when I first got the internet I was not so wise about websites and the concept of a search engine was foreign to me. So when hunting for anime I just typed the name of the anime followed by .com which led me to sailormoon.com. they gave me a sailormoon.com email address and access to chatrooms and stuff, and i recieved a newsletter. In the newsletter there was a story about Usagi and Mamoru going on a date and Usagi wearing a gorgeous silver dress and I was curious. This wasn't what I knew from the series. So I looked about anf found that people wrote stories for pretty much anything. So I started my first fanfic - a crossover of dragonball gt and tenchi muyo.
I'm rewriting it at the moment, because GT was too overpowered and too big of a cast for me to control.
But since then I have been reading and writing fanfics.

16 Name: DragonFriend95 : 2009-12-19 12:27 ID:cLdTBnmb

I found it by mistake. I was on a Numb3rs website and there was this little link to fanfiction. I was curious so I followed it through a lot of mini stories and eventually found ff.net.

Now my mum has to drag me off the computer with offerings of food and cola :P

17 Name: Dave2380 : 2009-12-19 14:44 ID:nuOK0jEQ

I was bored and looking at vgcats back issues one day and Aeris beat Leo to death after he caught her writing FFX slash. So being nosy i googled fanfics and kinda got hooked. Took me a while to get the nerve to give writing some a go.

18 Name: Vic Taylor : 2009-12-19 14:58 ID:Sc10ZekK

I'd pratically been raised on Doctor Who, and when the new series came around I was 9 or 10, and I just wanted something to happen on screen... so I wrote it.

26 Name: Lupa Dracolis : 2009-12-22 07:59 ID:V944gLoC

My friend was talking to me about a fanfic she wrote, and got me to go read it on ff.net.

27 Name: Windesque : 2009-12-25 14:35 ID:u8OzXwZX

My friend mentioned it to me briefly once. Then, on a forum, there was a thread about fanfiction, since there seemed to be quite a few writers on there. I loved reading the fics, and a few months later, I joined.

28 Name: Star Gamer : 2009-12-26 07:33 ID:oAJu9HCf

The first time I got into fanfiction was quite by accident when I was searching for anything Nintendo-related and the computer wasn't all that magnificent. Thankfully, I found Nintendoland.com in 2001. By that time, it was a dead website but there was som great Mario stories on there! I think it is up and running again now. Now I go o fnfiction.net... I wish I had found it earlier.

By the way, nice start to the website Yoshino in the Moonlight!

29 Name: RayRay : 2009-12-26 11:20 ID:LG/7Am97

My friend said she was reading HP fanfiction, when I said I'd never heard of it, she was gobsmacked, linked me to one, and since then I've been hooked.

It fed my secret belief that Draco and Ginny, and Remus and Sirius, are meant to be - and introduced me to a whole lot more.

Is started writing it about 2 months later, just written my 10th oneshot, about 6 months on from me getting my account!

30 Name: CrazyKidDeath : 2009-12-26 12:31 ID:f0DM9zKi

31 Name: Castora : 2009-12-26 16:57 ID:3W0dLOv9

I was watching a fanvideo on YouTube of Red Eye because I'd just seen the movie and I saw a link onto fanfiction. I clicked on it and was absolutely addicted. I eventually got my own account a year later and started writing.

32 Name: Rolo : 2009-12-26 19:14 ID:F2dPelHx

I had a rather bizarre introduction to fanfiction. An older friend of mine was /always/ on FF.net in the school library. One day, I decided to ask her what in heck's name it was, since she was always giggling at the computer screen. She told me what fanfiction was, I was stunned people wrote with other people's characters.

Needless to say, once I knew it existed, I began to write fanfiction. I signed up and posted fics. Later on, I found out through pure chance what it was that she was always giggling about... she seemed only to read slash and Mpreg. Not knowing what either of those were at the tender age of 13, she told me what they were. Needless to say, I was introduced to the rather less innocent way of using FF.net rather quickly that way. That side of things still scare me lightly.

33 Name: Blindfirekiller : 2009-12-26 21:45 ID:k/jaoU4u

Was bored one day, starting typing random things into g00gle

Read a few, two days later my first four chapters of my own story was up. I'd known about fanfiction but I hadn't realised how big it was. Once I read a few I got HUGE inspiration and started writing.

34 Name: Lil Miss Vampire : 2009-12-27 03:42 ID:UgeIgKpu

35 Name: tiger002 : 2009-12-27 18:32 ID:RDf550jD

Thought I already posted here, whoops.
Anyway, I had read a fanfiction posted on gamefaqs for Tales of Symphonia and loved it, too bad it was deleted. Later on someone else on gamefaqs put a link to one of his stories on there, which made me make an account on there, but then a forgot about it for over a year. Then someone else linked one of their stories to it, and I started browsing others. Found an epic adventure that made me want to write my strange ideas, and the rest is history

36 Name: Slavka13748 : 2009-12-27 19:10 ID:g+qatNjK

I forget how I found fan fiction to be honest... I think it was actually on a forum I belong to, the Beyond Good & Evil Revolution. We had a section for fan works, and there was this fantastic fanfic called 'Human, All Too Human'. It hasn't been updated in months, but that was the 'fic that got me onto FF.net, and it kind of went from there.

I only started writing (seriously) a couple of months ago, when the mood just took me.

37 Name: wwo : 2009-12-27 21:31 ID:Bf129C8+

Hm well, let's say I was looking for some slightly morally dubious material online for Lord of the Rings, and one directory gave me a link to fanfiction.net. Much to my delight it was actually a great source of entertainment that was more... kid friendly, shall we say, and was not just limited to LotR but pretty much everything I've ever watched, read, or played. Eventually I thought, hey, there aren't really that many stories that are exactly what I'm looking for. And the only was to fix that problem was to write some myself. And so I did!

38 Name: Madness : 2009-12-29 03:06 ID:4MWOr5b6

I was told by my twilight addicted friend that it was really good but because I never used a computer that often I thought it was a bit pointless reading online but then when i went on it by chance (because a story was on google) and I realised that you could write stuff, I was very excited.

I owe to FF that i actually started writing but now i'm pretty much hooked on it now :D

39 Name: Acacia : 2010-01-04 07:13 ID:6bvyK+ni

I was told about a few fanficiton sites by one of my teachers. I didn't think much of it, until one day I'd been a little bored and I checked them out.

After that I began writing, and have been ever since.

40 Name: Hannah : 2010-01-05 10:38 ID:p9iejahT

43 Name: Lay-A-Egg : 2010-01-06 04:49 ID:/sBI1g+F

About four years ago, I got back into pokemon (not in the actual plot, but I realised that certain characters would look cute together as a pairing) so I researched some more about my favourite pairings, and found that people had created fansites about them. Eventually I stumbled across "The Pokemon Tower" website which had fanfiction for it, and that provoked my interest in writing, even though I was a crap writer then.

I then came across ff.net, which appeared to be even more popular, and with many more fandoms, so I signed up, and have since gotten better at writing (and I have moved on to different fandoms). I am now addicted to it. =D

44 Name: GaretStrife : 2010-01-06 05:15 ID:+p9QUcpO

I was just on YouTube talking to my friends on there and fanfiction come up somehow, I can't exactly remember what happened since it was around June last year. After that I went on there quite a bit reading my friend's wrestling fan fics which were awesome imo, so I thought I'd write my own to see what people think.

47 Name: Orange : 2010-01-11 13:45 ID:K1uPcwpw

Years and years ago, I was into Digimon in a huge way. One of my friends also loved digimon, and was a way bigger fan than I was. When we were chatting one night she sent me a link to digimon fanfic with the words "trust me, you'll love this!"
Long story short, I did. Ever since then I was addicted to reading fanfiction. I started writing things of my own, but never really had the courage to start posting things until last year. And I'm really glad I did. I still write for myself, and keep things that I don't post, but actually posting things on ff.net has helped me.

48 Name: Sara : 2010-01-11 14:39 ID:PPwER9U7

50 Name: MissMimi87 : 2010-01-14 06:47 ID:iMXmiL0E

I think I've already mentioned it in other threads, but my sister was so obsessed with it that she went on the internet looking for stories and then would read them and the ones she liked she would make me read.
It even got to the point where we were considering writing one together but I was like 10 and and she was 13 and the stuff we wrote down wasn't very good. But I remembered it like years later and I started writing my first story last year.

51 Name: Niori : 2010-01-14 16:32 ID:NGQIMT0H

My cousin was into reading Dragonball Z and Angel fics back in seventh grade and introduced me to ff.net...and thus an obession was born.

52 Name: DancexInxThexDark : 2010-01-16 06:40 ID:b8Mt8xgq

Well, i got into anime when i was in primary school, about year 5 time, but back then, writing didn't mean much to me.
But as i matured, i found myself writing ideas down on stories i would love to write about. That was when it hit me 'i wonder if there's a website where people can post stories online?'
and as if by magic along came fanfiction.net
I got writing straight away after that :)

53 Name: Librastar : 2010-01-16 11:55 ID:ZOjkdl0N

Mine was when I was thirteen. I was a cool kid and really really wanted a Digimon. So my first piece of fanfic was a self-insert of very poor quality. Bad times!

73 Name: Tristana : 2010-01-24 16:41 ID:Tn93W6US

@ WhiteAtropos: If I tell you that my very first fanfic was a poor excuse to get to snog Captain Jack Sparrow?^^ (Never let anyone read that and destroyed the file)

So I started searching the net for HoND websites, and I came across a site (now dead) called "The HoND Fan Fic Store." I had NO idea that people actually wrote down new adventures of their favorite characters.

I stumbled on it four years ago looking for some random fictions.
At first I didn't like it, at all. I was so used to the other sites that I didn't give it a chance. About a year later I just signed up.

Two days later I couldn't stop typing out stories and eventually I'm a semi-successful FF author and I love it.

Personal thanks to Quizilla in the early days! :)

Well I discovered fan fiction thanks to one of my best friends six years ago. We always liked to read a lot, and one day she showed me this page with fan fics of Card Captor Sakura, our favorite anime at the momment. I used to write little stories in my notebook for different animes bway before that, but I didn't now that was called "fan fiction" until she showed me that page.
After that, came Fanfiction.net
I started publishing fics later on. Now I keep publishing about CCS and Supernatural.

Well, I was 14 at the time. It was just after Charmed's sixth season was aired in Britain, so around February/March 2004 and I was reeling after they killed off my favourite character (Chris).

I went online trying to find stuff about it and discovered a site, I think it was called strawtogold.net. From there I discovered what fanfic was, and a couple of weeks later I discovered fanfic.net.

I didn't create an account until 2006 though, and only now am I really serious about the one story I'm writing, which involves torturing my favourite character to a point worse than death, funny turnaround there.

Having heard about HP fanfiction, I decided to see if there was fanfiction for other stuff. I decided to use Ace Combat and found JohnnyFrosts Tower of Black Ivory. From then on, I was hooked

I think for me it was about two years ago, I was looking at art on Deviantart.com, and I found a link to a fanfiction from a pic that was based off of a chapter of the story.

I read that fanfiction and many more after it, and just fell in love with writing. I think it was that day or the one after it that I sighed up to the website and became hooked on writing fanfiction. :)

Being a Yaoi Freak who knows about a lot of mangas and animes in a circle of obsessed friends, word got round about Fanfiction.net. Naturally curiosity hit me and I had to see. It was like heaven on earth. I was writing stories before this whole thing, but then I started writing my own fanfictions and got some hits. It was amazing so why let it go?

lol. I was 10 when I was searching for a Inuyasha website when i discovered a link to an author's page. after reading the story I checked out her favorites and the favorites of the authors I found through her favorites then I eventually figured out how the website works. I've been on fanfiction.net during most of my freetime since. I even got my mom into it. >:-)

I was about 13 or so and the first Harry Potter movie had just come out (so of course it had just got popular) and about the second or third book had come out. My friends and I had been reading the books since they came out and one of my friends discovered the oh so amazing Draco trilogy by Cassandra Claire which was posted on Snoogle. After reading that I went searching for more and found ff.net. And here I am 8 years later still reading and writing!

This is sad, but I really don't remember how I came of FF. I think I had been watching trailers for fanfics on Youtube. And then I clicked on the site and just loved it. I think it was two years later I got an account, because I realized I was serious about writing. Now I don't post anything though.

I was really into Inuyasha and I ended up searching some inukag stuff and viola I found fanfiction. However, I didn't find out about fanfiction.net until eighth grade when I heard some classmates talk about it. Love that site.

I was looking for Pokemon fics. At the time I was a Pokeshipper, and I was looking for fics of the pairing. Then I came across FF.net and pretty much immediately joined up.

i remember that three or four years ago i was reading some writings on Daa! Daa! Daa! and Cardcaptor Sakura ( i can recall it was a Sakura K. & Syaoran L. fanfic and Syaoran cheats on her with Tomoyo. it actually made me hate Tomoya for a minute there). At that time, i didnt even know they were called fanfictions at that time, but i enjoyed them anyway.

Then, last year, i was IMing my friend and she told me about this fanfiction she read on a site called adultfanfiction.net. the story was called For the Love of His Son. I was completely in love with the fiction and i asked her for recommendations. SHe then gave me another fanfiction site ( fanficiton.net) and i just started off from there. Because of HER, i am now an addicted fanfic reader.

I first discovered fanfiction when surfing the web for 'Pokemon' related things. I found and read some 'Pokemon' fics on independent hosting sites. For a time I enjoyed reading 'Pokemon' fanfics, but I eventually sorta just forgot about it. I didn't rediscover it until a while later, only this time it was 'Teen Titans' stories, and it was at this time that I discovered ff dot net. Again, for a while I enjoyed reading fics, and at one point I even tried to start an account, but I didn't understand how to get my e-mail account started up at the time, and once again real life drama intervened and prevented me from even so much accessing a computer for... shit, I don't even know exactly how long it was, but it sure felt like a long time... (And, no, I'd rather not detail what was going on -- family issues, and whatnot)

The third time I discovered fanfiction, it was in the Naruto fandom. After reading lurking for a while, I finally joined fanfiction dot net on June 11, 2006. Third time's the charm, I guess.
