2 Name: Daydreamer-Of-The-Unknown : 2009-11-03 10:40 ID:yIorPC3+

Mostly some sort of romance song that
fits the certain couple I write about!

Really depends, on my mood and what I want
to write in my stories!

3 Name: abvamp : 2009-11-03 12:25 ID:twquxf3J

Maroon 5, Duffy, Cold Play, Snow Patrol, Robbie Williams, to name a few.

4 Name: DarthRevanShepard : 2009-11-03 12:49 ID:4IXnngHA

I usually just listen to anything but it's mostly My Chemical Romance, Paramore, Breaking Benjamin, Three Days Grace or Evans Blue.

5 Name: dance with the devil : 2009-11-03 14:38 ID:/5TV6Gvs

Breaking Benjamin, Emilie Autumn, Voltaire, some of Bowling for Soup's stuff, My Chemical Romance and NIne days

6 Name: The Unreal Insomniac : 2009-11-03 21:05 ID:An64FuVY

It really depends on what kind of scene i'm trying to write.

For example if I'm writing a fight scene I'm normally listening to some seriously aggressive music, I was listening to Hearts Burst into Fire for a Sasuke vs Naruto fight I wrote. Now it's not aggressive as something like disturbed which is what I tend to put on, however it fit the situation lol.

But with fluffy or romance scenes, yes you guessed, loadsa love songs lol, sometimes really cheesy songs, trust me.

I tend to find a song which brings up the feelings of the character, say if Harry Potter was thinking about his dad or talking about him I'd listen to the song "A song for Dad" which is all about how much the singer is like his Dad. So yeah lol.

Love music, window to our souls and all that lol

7 Name: CrazyShikamaruFan : 2009-11-04 13:24 ID:nzeAptWB

I listen to Emily Autumn, every one of her songs and poems tell a story, which inspires me, you should really listen to her!

YEY! i'm not the only one!

9 Name: Purplepaintbrush : 2009-11-04 15:12 ID:PkEizxiC

Same as The Unreal Insomniac and Daydreamer-Of-The-Unknown.

I listen to music depending on the mood am writing. And sometimes I have songs that fit the characters that I play when I write them :)

10 Name: TeatThePetals : 2009-11-05 11:14 ID:fZGHulmS

Most of my chapters are rather heavily based on whatever I'm listening to while I write, to the point where I write scenes that fit more with the songs than the story I had planned on writing. At the moment I'm listening to alot of Gregory and the Hawk, Hello Saferide and Ani Difranco.

Does anyone do lyric-substitution things for their fandoms?

fall out boy, linkin park, disturbed, My chemical Romance, three days grace, The used, Paramore, the list goes on and on and on... :D

If I'm writing fics based on games, I sometimes play the game music, usually from u-tube. Eg. for Soul Calibur, Brave Sword, Braver Soul, Unwavering Resolve etc. Particularly useful when a character has a certain tune associated with them.

13 Name: RayRay : 2009-11-06 00:04 ID:LYZFoTs0

I don't listen to music when I'm writing really. Music inspires me though.

The fic I'm currently writing was inspired by the Bloc Party album "Weekend in the City".

Literally as well...was driving, listening to the song, and the idea was there.
I was in a bad mood as well, so to take my mind of the mood, I listened and as I listened, more of the fic came into place.

Now when I get writers block, I listen to that album again.

Not possible at the minute because I've lost it though ='(

14 Name: Lin Waddell : 2009-11-11 07:40 ID:v65jKjnf

Hmm, its funny because I always listen to music when I work and I change up the tunes depending on my mood, different genres feeding me different vibes for certain themes.

Like, Breaking Benjamin, Three Days Grace, Red, Three Doors Down, Disturbed, Linkin Park and Chevelle are great for when I need pound out some action or drama.

When it comes to a more romantic sense and even angst scenes, scores are great and so are some lighter tones from Trapt, Within Temnptation, Crossfade and some of the bands list above.

Then again, if I want to really just get immersed, I put my music or iPod on shuffled and zone out :P

15 Name: sailorjupiterox : 2009-11-13 09:35 ID:P9QCD/60

@dance with the devil, I'm writing a story about the song 'dance with the devil' by Breaking Benjamin, you should check it out :) It's on my link :DDD

I usually listen to Paramore, Breaking Benjamin, Forever The Sickest Kids, Green Day, Cobra Starship, 3oh!3, Beyonce, Plain White T's, Katy Perry umm ... and a lot of other bands, I have all the playlists for each different story on my iPod (my friends think I'm weird ¬_¬)

16 Name: Darkangelsmind : 2009-11-13 10:14 ID:hYOBr/Ry

I don't tend to listen to music while i'm writing my fics as it tends to distracet me however i love sticking my music on shuffle while creating fan-art!!

17 Name: Nadine : 2009-11-13 22:09 ID:zd87rECD

I dont particularly stick to one genre of music and tend to like everything but whilst writing it seems to be something more loud and beaty; drums and anger work well. Evanesence, Paramore, Avril Lavigne, Green Day, P!nk, Ardor and some rap like Eminem (the angrier the better)

18 Name: tiger002 : 2009-11-13 22:31 ID:RQx2UWzx

Normally I try to find something that fits the scene. For action, disturbed, dragonforce, and the like.

19 Name: SoraLover101 : 2009-11-15 10:00 ID:nftdIRMQ

I sometimes listen to music but not always, but if I do, it's either a random song or something that fits the story and/or pairing.

20 Name: BellaCullen666 : 2009-11-15 10:01 ID:nftdIRMQ

I also sometimes listen to music while writing but normally its just some random song stuck in my head before hand

21 Name: Colinamilly : 2009-11-16 09:20 ID:Xp0F7spU

For me it actually depends on the emotion i want to put into the scene in the story. but most of these songs vary from classic to rock. try listening to the ending of MAN ON FIRE and see what it makes you feel and then transfer those feelings into your story. sometimes i even listen to japanese music, indian music and the list goes on. even though i dont understand most of what is sang, i still get the emotions from the beat, or from the way the words sound foregn to me and then i try to transfer that foregn feeling into the scene in the story.

22 Name: NopeJustMe : 2009-11-16 17:35 ID:Ve8X6CtC

All the time, I can't really write in silence. It depends on the scene I'm working on, classical for sad bits, soft blues for couples, and rock and metal for fight scenes.

23 Name: qwerty91 : 2009-11-17 10:40 ID:D5uBSExO

well I usually listen to either the ffX soundtrack or some songs from kingdom hearts. that's cus I write final fantasy fics tho. I was listening to paramore when writing a chapter before and it turned out pretty rubbish...

24 Name: blackheart_whitenoise : 2009-11-17 10:44 ID:RBLRv3og

Sort of varies really, or according to what sort of scene I'm writing about, I do liek a bit of Thin Lizzy though :D

25 Name: Princess Tiger : 2009-11-17 13:03 ID:xJ7Ih+gD

I don't usually listen to music while writing as it normally distracts me. I usually listen to music before I write, as I like to imagine a scene in the story that that particular song could be a background piece to, then if it fits in a chapter, I can write it. If I can't think of a scene, I'll often imagine a montage for one of the different relationships within the story, that helps too.
If it's a romance scene though, I will always listen to 'This Guy's in Love' by Herb Alpert, it's the cheesiest, yet one of the most brilliant love songs ever sung; it always seems to crop up in relationships, either with characters dancing to it, or the guy serenading it to his love interest. Ahh, I always imagined this being sung to me when I was little.

26 Name: Star-pidgeon : 2009-11-17 13:19 ID:rOOF9oYa

I usually listen to music to drown out my family I cant write if their talking. I just let my ipod play through random songs though my favorite is Aerosmith

27 Name: Farrahmack : 2009-11-17 15:48 ID:0raQqxNZ

Paramore, Marylin Manson ( yes I know shiver be he is frightening enough to inspire me.) and any thing with good lyrics.

28 Name: Anonymous : 2009-11-17 17:01 ID:RWCRyLaO

Most things by Snow Patrol. I really like their lyrics- hearing decent lyrics tends to help writer's block too, so it's all good.

29 Name: Kivea : 2009-11-18 04:37 ID:8aCwe7PB

I listen to things with the right mood, but lyrics count most. Cause, as said above, it helps with writer's block.

I've recently discovered two Breed 77 songs that fit in with my fic so well. So now I know I can write, the ideas just fall into my head when I listen to those songs.

Its amazing. If I ever vid my fic, those will be the songs.

33 Name: Watcher : 2009-11-22 18:37 ID:0Zje3IBw

I listen to Wrock sometimes (Wizard Rock), because I fanfiction Harry Potter. But I find Evanescence, Three Days Grace, Avril Lavigne, Nickelback and Simple Plan are really insperational bands, so I listen to them, too. (:

34 Name: Zanaso Rymm : 2009-11-25 10:51 ID:0S19e6AU

35 Name: Chloe xoxo : 2009-12-01 10:03 ID:7UKnE6jC

I normally listn to the usual. You Know paramore, Mcr, you me t six, the rocky guitar solo types mainly. They make me kinda angry and write in a stuck up manner. he.he. that's the way my character is. so it helps me get into caracter!! :)

36 Name: James : 2009-12-01 10:20 ID:1HJTEvID

I try to match the mood of whatever scene I'm writing; if it's a sad scene, I go for Within Temptation. If it's fast-paced, In Flames, and so on.

When writer's block hits me, I go for Poets of the Fall, who are just plain awesome in every way. <3

37 Name: Anonymous : 2009-12-01 11:42 ID:OgbXo0LT

I listen to whatever's on in my iTunes, sometimes I listen to recently added, or just put the whole thing on shuffle. Sometimes if I'm writing something for a specific thing I listen to a soundtrack (if it has one) to help me if I get writer's block- but otherwise anything.

38 Name: Morganna : 2009-12-01 11:47 ID:hRO+uKYy

As has been said before, I like to listen to songs I can relate to the scene or the character.
While writing my first Legacy of Kain fanfiction I listened to a lot of System of Down - Hypnotise. I found that the lyrics perfectly depicted the way a my narrator felt at times, it helped me zone in to her anger at the injustice she'd suffered.
I'm now writing another LoK fanfiction and find that this time I am listening to Nightwish, this is becasue my character is a singer and I can visualise her singing like Tarja.

I also put my iPod on shuffle and listen to Disturbed, Meatloaf, Queen, Within Temptation, Linkin Park, Leaves' Eyes, Therion, KoRn, Aesthetic Perfection, Suicide Commando... amoung others... too man to list ^_^

39 Name: Takato Lover16 : 2009-12-01 13:57 ID:WujgNWYv

Yeah, I have probably got the 'saddest' playlist ever, but whatever.

Whenever I am stuck for ideas, I put the radio on. (Magic 105.4)
It's based in London, or something.

Anyway, they play some really, really, insperational songs.
The music and the lyrics just make me so content.
I love getting ideas from them.

I prefer radio as opposed to my iPod, because it's random.
But, it is really annoying when you find a song that you really love, but don't know what it's called.

It's just like, well...Magic.

Hahaha, I just got the punn.

40 Name: swiftsilence : 2009-12-01 14:03 ID:skk87qZv

I listen to a lot of music while writing... mostly paramore, All-american rejects and fall out boy as their lyrics can jolt a thought inside my head.

41 Name: Blindfirekiller : 2009-12-05 12:14 ID:Zpy0lOkg

I listen to music all the time so I can't really say I listen to it while writing. Sadly, my music is quite limited, I like a few bands and I like songs of others but don't like the band themselves (E.g, The Kill -Like- 30 sconds 2 mars -hate-)

So what I do listen to is

Tokio Hotel
Alot of random songs from different bands=(

42 Name: Darksword512 : 2009-12-05 19:34 ID:HyEI3VgG

Anything and everything I like, but it's normally Rise Against, Linkin Park, Funeral For A Friend, Breaking Benjamin, Simple Plan, My Chemical Romance or Blink-182 because they're all the most awesome bands in my mind XD

I'm having a fanboy moment because I just seen most of these bands listed numerous times XD

43 Name: Xandre : 2009-12-05 23:10 ID:N03g7TCG

I have this several-thousand strong playlist. Just push play and write to the tunes. Bands include:

Enya, Moby, ZZ Top, Def Leppard, Deftones, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Blink-182, Offspring, Linkin Park, 30 Seconds To Mars, Zebrahead, Kaiser Chiefs, Kasabian, Razorlight, etc

44 Name: Lizzieleaf : 2009-12-06 04:39 ID:tuK3lAuX

I mainly like listening to Play, the Moby album, it's so urban and sexy. I think any song I listen to really reflects in my work, so I choose pretty carefully. I never listen to anything recent/in the charts, unless it's inspiring enough.

45 Name: LASER : 2009-12-06 17:09 ID:VkKPANl7

usually sterophonics or modest mouse if I'm struggling with ideas otherwise shuffle, only thing is I've got about 26 days of music on my iTunes so I'm always skipping through songs and then I just get distracted

46 Name: Star's Snowflake : 2009-12-06 18:49 ID:jtqEIYJp

Since I do a lot of musical fan fics, I usually listen to the music from the play before/during/after writing a fic. Sometimes it helps me get more intune, though it can be distracting. I also love coming up with drabbles with my ipod on shuffle. I don't know what I'm gonna think of! I don't really have an artist I listen to for inspiration, but I do put stuff into playlists that I might use too. There, that's about it.

47 Name: NewMagicWeaver : 2009-12-08 13:03 ID:MTvout25

Does anyone listen to Natasha Bedingfield? I always listen to her music when I'm writing. I love the song "Soulmate". I can't live without that song. When I'm writing L.J.Smith fanfiction about Soulmates, guess what song I always put on my iPod?

48 Name: Aaron Anderson : 2009-12-13 00:27 ID:myuOcxiz

Mostly Videogame music or tracks from Movies like Last Samurai, otherwise it's tons of rock and metal such as Trivium, Sylosis, Shadows fall, Bloodsimple and MJ. Wait, damn....

Quite a few but I find that they inspire me.

It's a weird mix of music when i write, from Pink to the Rocky Horror show cast album, to savage garden, dusty springfield, right now i'm devouring the Hedwig and the angry inch cast album from the off broadway production. And theres the omnipresent Sanctuary/Passion from kingdom hearts 2, for some reason i really like those two songs.

I don't really tend to like more than one song from a band, though there are a few exceptions:
Breaking Benjamin,
The Fray,
Within Temptation,
...And Disney xD A lot of Disney for some reason. I can't write without music, though it doesn't really affect what I'm writing. I just go on Spotify and have my playlists on shuffle :D
Oh, and a ton of movie soundtracks too. Especially PoTO.

59 Name: Darksword512 : 2010-01-01 11:39 ID:HyEI3VgG

Has anyone noticed that nearly all of the song writers mentioned on here are all rock bands? I've seen Breaking Benjamin come up so many times I've lost count XD

Does anyone else listen to Rise Against btw?

60 Name: DarkFallenAngel : 2010-01-01 14:50 ID:Y0sXEt6u

Evanescence helps me a lot, Paramore sometimes too. I also listen to 'Repo!' if I'm writing something gorey.

I just tend to put my iTunes library on shuffle, but then I end up skipping more than half the songs because they aren't right for writing, y'know?

I usually end up listening to a mix of:
Rise Against
The Goo Goo Dolls
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Random soundtracks
And this one song by Thriving Ivory ^_^

I tend to listen to whatever fits the feel of the scene I'm trying to write. Sometimes, if I'm writing video game, movie, anime - etc. - fiction, I'll listen to the corresponding soundtrack.

However, right now I'm majorly hooked on the Assassin's Creed II soundtrack. It's absolutely fantastic for writing!

(... And I've written to Breaking Benjamin once or twice. They're great in that the music has a good beat, but isn't so amazing that it demands your full attention. =P)

68 Name: Lay-A-Egg : 2010-01-03 10:02 ID:9FQqVhxG

Mostly alternative/"emo" rock. ^o^ It really helps get my creative juices flowing, even if the story I'm writing isn't necessarily angsty.

-Linkin Park
-Panic At The Disco
-Breaking Benjamin
-Cobra Starship (mainly "The City is at War")
-Innerpartysystem (well, one song of theirs...)
-RED (one song >_>)
-30 Seconds to Mars
-Nickelback sometimes

So many other random ones on my writing playlist!

I've got a new obssession with listening to Burn it to the Ground and Saving Me by Nickelback. These are two of a few songs I won't be humming to :p

71 Name: JustAchild : 2010-01-03 11:28 ID:9NGeE2AW

>>73 To TheSoliloquy: Yay! That was the first time someone has referenced me on this forum. =D I don't tend to listen to Nickelback that much anymore (as they're not angsty enough, but still awesome) and when I do it's usually "Savin' Me".

And if you like the bands I listed, you should totally listen to Flyleaf (who some people have compared to Paramore, but they're not really that similar)! And Cobra Starship if you like Panic. I only know "Don't Stop" by Innerpartysystemm, but that's fun too. =]

And like SapphireElric, I create stories based on songs and tend to put that song on repeat. Or I write song drabbles, where you listen to a song once and try and write a 100 word drabble based on the song in the time the song plays.

Why do I always write long posts? =/

Anything which is related to the theme of the chapter. Let's say, for example, I'm writing an epic fight on one of my chapters for World of Warcraft fanfiction. I would put on some epic fight musics from all over the place, be it movie, game, or anime OSTs/songs.

I suppose for a fifthteen yur old my band choices are quite strange but here you go.
Bon Jovi
Def Leopard
Guns N Roses
Linkin Park
Ozzy Ozburne
Status Quo
and if I'm in a poetic mood then I'll listen to Marillion.

85 Name: Orange : 2010-01-11 13:55 ID:P8y+3AOx

A lot of my fanfic are either based on or inspired by songs. Like many of you, I'm into my rock music. However, when I'm actually writing I tend to listen to the same four bands.
These are the Aquabats, Motion City Soundtrack, Limbeck and Talking heads. I find that I tend to work best when I'm listening to them!
Bands/artists I get inspiration from are much more varied. At the moment I'm writing something based on a Billy Idol song, and another fic based on a Kevin Devine song.

Whatever I fancy really, it all depends on the story I'm reading :)

I personally prefer to have silence when I get down to writing. Mainly because I become distracted and lose a train of thought when that happens. Although when I'm planning the story, I tend to listen to the song which inspired the theme of the story.

It depends on what kind of scene I'm writing as to what music I'll listen too, but at the moment, I'm in the middle of writing a scene which has sad overtones, and the song 'Wandering' has hit about 80 plays on my Itunes. It just sets a meloncholy mood so well.

It's strange, but i find it hard to concentrate on a story if i havn't got music on. I guess it feels as though something is missing.
Also, most of my inspiration comes from the music. There have been many times i've been stuck in a writers block and i'd just be sitting there, listening to a song and a sudden lyric would just make sense or help me along :)

Well it depends on what is happening in the chapter. If I'm writing an action sequence, I listen to disturbed, Manson, Linkin Park of Avenged Sevenfold. If it's a quirky fun chapter then Blink 182, Greenday or Scouting for Girls.

However whenever I finish writing I like to re-read listening to Kiss God Gave Rock and Roll to you

Rather random I think

Well, anything and everything, really.
Marmaduke Duke are one of my faves at the moment, as well as L'arc en Ciel and Aucifer.

But Beethoven and Nobuo Uematsu are neat, too. I love Uematsu's piano version of Aerith's theme. :]

I like Friendly Fires, too.

I love your taste in music! :D

I cannot, /CANNOT/, write and listen to music. Even if I'm writing well already, it interrupts my train of thought completely.

i usully listen to who will i be (camp rock). But different music make me think of different out comes in my stories. Like if i was writing a sad story i'd listen to my immortal (Evanescence)and if it was funny i would listen to High school never ends. Music changes my mood and my ideas. Strange i know but i find it cool

These days, I have an obsession with 'Masquerade' by L'Âme Immortelle. Though I tend to listen to some random music and then I'm all: that'd go well with [anime] or [anime] or... and so on...
Though when I write, I have a few bands I constantly listen to: Epica (fight sceeeeeeeeeeeenes!), Diary of Dreams, Within Temptation, Tristania, Deathstars and... many others. But I tend to turn them into AMVs too. But overall, it can be anything. I just can't live without music.

Mine's a bit of an eclectic mix made up of rock, pop, weird crap, OST and anime themes.

I have a few bands that always inspire though:

  • Rolo Tomassi
  • Fightstar
  • Bloc Party
  • Modest Mouse
  • We Are Scientists
  • MONO
  • Florence + The Machine
  • Canterbury

I can't really work without music.

Im a bit of both I guess.
When it comes to writing, I am not ashamed! But my friends arent exactly supportive. The first time I told someone, they asked what it was about, and were generally really interested. As soon as they found out it was fan fiction, they told me they were no longer interested and didnt want to read it anymore. Does anyone else have this problem?
