What do you think your strengths and weaknesses as a writer are? (92)

1 Name: Prism0467 : 2009-09-12 16:29 ID:RfYYAxgN

I was reading one of my fics and smiling. I found it to be sexy, and nearly flawless in terms of the way I structure sentences. However, I have always wondered if my premises held water. Additionally, I write and publish lemons with a bitten lip, unsure if they are sexy enough, or original enough. I usually get good feedback in my reviews, but as a writer I am always my own worst critic (as I'm sure you can all relate to).

What do you think your strengths and weaknesses are in your writing?

43 Name: Cannonade : 2009-11-03 10:42 ID:nudMCui6

Strengths: People tell me they like my Star Trek slash (though I don't write graphic stuff). A bit of humour, but I tend to lean more towards violence, dark themes and inner conflicts. I think I can keep to characters... I also like to kill off characters, especially popular ones and then have the bad guys win!

Weaknesses: I am terrible at starting something, thinking of something else and totally forgetting where I was, thus not finishing things. I always think ahead of my typing, so end up with typos and then gramma/spelling errors because Word tries to correct the said typos! I also find it hard to write happy things without making them seem stupid... but I am generally a cheerful person!

44 Name: Chloe : 2009-11-14 05:16 ID:+X6lk92W

I have many weaknesses but being only fourteen I think I'm entitled to a few.

  • I like to dramatize too much, and I want everything to happen at once.
  • I also tend to waffle way too much, I mean I started writing a story and so far I'm up to 30,000 words and the plot has barely even come into it, let alone thickened.
  • I usually run into stories on a whim as well without precise planning, and after a few chapters I feel good about, I end up thinking, 'well now what is going to happen?'
  • I always use the wrong words and typed ahead of myself. Like, I would mean to write 'He had a headache because of the loud music' but it would come out 'He had a headache the loud music'. I am just in a hurry to write it down most of the time :)

45 Name: Nefertel : 2009-11-14 09:05 ID:VtahAg0I

strengths - i appartently can write a good story and i can leave some great cliff hangers.

weakness - were 2 start my main was is my confidence i never really think my stories are actually that good.
also my grammer could be better.
and a million other things

plus i also found out that if i know what the ending is gonna be i can write a couple of good chapters and then some bad ones then i just wanna get the ending out of the way and the story isnt good
but if i have no idea what is actually gonna happen and i wing it with every chapter i tend 2 write better chapters

46 Name: bezerkoid : 2009-11-14 14:37 ID:UGO2I94q

Strengths: Battle scenes I suppose, though violence and dark themes are something i think I'm not bad at.

Weaknesses: At times realism may be a problem. I tried writing a social drama and I also found it kind of difficult.

47 Name: DarthRevanShepard : 2009-11-14 14:55 ID:elIW3Ogo

Strength: Well I think it's safe to say but just in case (gets out riot sheild to defend against tomatoes) that I am very skilled for my age.

Weaknesses: I tend to make characters act OOC (Even my own), I usually make my stories too short and I can suck with making my stories interesting and have taken down the majority of mine. But hey, I enjoy it so i'll keep trying to get better.

48 Name: Gouken 20xx : 2009-11-14 16:58 ID:Jd32hEcp

Strengths -

  • I'm not a canon nazi.
  • I work on ideas that a lot of people seem to give a wide berth to.
  • When I do post a story, I can usually get people reading fairly well.

Weaknesses -

  • My posting speed is dire.
  • My writing speed is dire.
  • There can be periods of up to a year where I do nothing to do with writing.

Maybe both -

  • I might not be a canon nazi, but I can rip canon apart for fun.

49 Name: Prism0467 : 2009-11-14 21:38 ID:T/1XUe/n

Good one, Gouken 20xx--

To piggyback on your last bullet, I have a taste for the older characters in my fandom--the parents, sensei or guardians of the more popular characters, and I will write yaoi fanfiction for them. On the one hand, I'm working what amounts to a niche; on the other hand, I'm working what amounts to a niche. What has resulted is a sort of cult following for my work, but it's a very small one.

I'm not complaining, mind you--just making the point, as you did, that something can be considered both strength and weakness.

50 Name: NopeJustMe : 2009-11-16 17:39 ID:UO5DSiIV

Erm, hmm...you mean aside from all the spelling and grammar errors?
I write too many characters, and have them doing important things all at the same time, some reviewers have complained about their heads hurting trying to keep up! My stories are long-winded and fast-paced, not really a good mix. I also takes ages to write D:

Erm...strengths. I can name weaknesses easily. I suppose my plots themselves are quite good, I can throw in a few twists, and I'm good at cliffhangers, though I overuse them. I try to put real emotion into my stories, and it seems to work, just a little.

51 Name: LASER : 2009-11-17 14:34 ID:86avBHVn

I'm pretty good at characterisations and plot development but I suck at planning out my stories.

grammar I just don't care about

52 Name: Farrahmack : 2009-11-17 16:03 ID:ndU9obFs

I have bad grammar.. ( by bad I mean BAD)

I tend to start one story then get caught up in another..

I rush my endings...

any other critique?? you tell me check out my fics and tell me what to improve..

Well, I guess that they would be the following.

Let's start off with my weaknesses.
My weaknesses include advanced grammar more then anything such as using colons, semi-colons and I rely on Spellcheck for most of the things I am unsure about. In school, english was my worst subject, but I've gotten much better over the years.

And now for my strengths.
For my strengths, I will have to say that I excel in plotlines and character creation. I am also good with action scenes and in romance scenes as well. If you ever need help creating a new character or writing a fighting scene, I would be more then willing to help with both such things.

55 Name: Kivea : 2009-11-18 04:36 ID:WcqjcLra

I love Symbolism. Like seriously, I'd marry it if I could. I think, apart from imagery, it's one of the best tools for writing. And its fun O:

56 Name: DragonFriend95 : 2009-11-21 12:06 ID:85sGdoqV

Let's see... my weaknesses are usually spelling, nothing major, but I can sometimes miss a letter or mix it up, like adn, bt etc. mainly cause I type so fast. I also have trouble with emotions because I'm autistic so it's harder to understand how someone is feeling.

As for my strength's I'd say I'm pretty good at kidnap scenes (not that I'm very proud of it) and someone has said that my stories have a nice flow to them, which I suppose is good, and another said I'm quite sensitive with my Numb3rs death fic :)

57 Name: queenoftheoutlands : 2009-11-21 13:39 ID:MNGfu0SA

Here we go then:
Strengths- My biggest stregth is character writing, getting into their heads at particularly interesting points of canon and trying to explain why they are doing what they are doing
I also write parodies quite well, I am told

Weaknesses- Once I get into writing a character I like, I tend to stick to writing for that character
Spelling is sometimes not great, but hey, whats a spellcheck for?

Could be either- I enjoy writing villainous characters. A lot.

58 Name: Woody2792 : 2009-11-26 08:16 ID:LRpinKMz

I find it quite easy to get into a character's mind, eg. Arya from teh Inheri Cycle tends to be extremely OOC (Out of Character) in many fics I stumble upon. Yet I get ridiculously amazing reviews to say that I get her just right (I love those reviewers!)

I guess I'm also good at imitating a writer's style, as I've been compared to CP (Christopher Paolini) several tiems. I take this as a huge compliment, but I want to deveop my own writing style for my original fics...

A weakness si that I get caught up in aprts of the story, and when I'm really into it, I don't enjoy writing the small filler-but-necessary parts -> I just wanna get to teh good bit!

59 Name: Sapphira : 2009-12-01 15:34 ID:TVqrw7rg

Strengths:

  1. My spelling and grammar tends to be very good. Although sometimes, when I'm in a rush, I miss out the occasional word which is a habit I never managed to break in primary school. :D
  2. Creating OCs. They usually integrate well with the canon characters (or so I've been told) and I don't think I create Mary Sues, either.
  3. Description. All the credit goes to my English teacher there: he's amazing.

Weaknesses:

  1. Canon charaterisation. I'm better with lesser known characters when I can make them, to a degree, anything I want.
  2. Believing that my work is good in any way. In my A/Ns at the end of chapter I always tell my reviewers that I don't think I did a certain part right, and ask them for their opinion.

60 Name: Efyraa : 2009-12-01 15:37 ID:QOWeDbMk

I don't really know my strengths but I don't count myself the weakest writer. I guess my sheer strength is description, as people have told me, but I'm not convinced about it much. |:

My main weakness which pulls me down is the fact I get nervous when I publish a fanficiton. I guess I compare myself to other writers ALOT. I enjoy it but theres always that little part.
Also, even though I can have a wide range of words, my mind's always on block from it. It's hella annoying.

61 Name: Elkkun : 2009-12-02 07:35 ID:FEKanDoH

My strengths are probably characterisation(?) I've been told a few times that I'm good with personalities mainly with my own characters...I was told on one of my Team Fortress 2 fictions that the Red Scout gave a few people nightmares because I creeped everyone out with him (oops)

I guess a few of my weaknesses are spelling, grammar and keeping a few of my characters...IN character. Like in my L4D story I was re-reading through and realised that my characters had changed A LOT D=.

Well I guess that's easy to do as in my L4D story I have like...9-10 characters to keep in-character as my TF2 one I only have two maybe three. ^_^''

62 Name: TheNightShaodw4 : 2010-12-07 17:17 ID:MexFWgzr

My number one weakness is procrastination. Seriously, I'm like the goddess of putting things off til the last minute. I also used to have really bad spelling and grammar, but I'm proud to say that-while far from perfect-I've greatly improved since I started writing fanfictioin.

As for strengths, I'm good at coming up with new ideas. And I always make sure I've got the facts right.

63 Name: Idrill : 2010-12-08 04:30 ID:vN4suDmU

I think my nr 1 weakness has to be my grammar. In school I do alright (better than alright:D), but somehow when writing for FF I'm at a loss, Oh and I should check for typos more often since I tend to type too fast and therefore get all those...well typos:P THEN I have to habit to read when it's finished, conclude it's too short and at parts that are a little of (they don't suck or make no sence, it's just not necessary)

My strenghts... Well I discovered I'm better at no-sence making/romance stories than adventure or action. which is kinda annoying since I like the action genre more. but hey, it's better than not being able to write at all.

Since I've started to practice on descriptions I've improved quite a bit with that too, at first it was all dialoges.

And people tell me I'm good at keeping it IC, which is always nice to hear:D

So much for my rant:D

64 Name: Idrill : 2010-12-08 04:31 ID:vN4suDmU

people I mean sense! sorry! (see, I need to check it more often)

65 Name: KatonRyu : 2010-12-08 05:42 ID:e3UsE/ZD

My strength is dialogue. Somehow I always end up having far more dialogue in my story than description, for instance. I'm told I manage to keep characters IC pretty well, too. A last thing I'd consider a strength is my spelling and grammar.

My weakness is my lack of description. I sometimes read fics with awesome descriptions, and I try to be just as captivating, but somehow I never quite manage to keep it up, always ending up with mostly dialogue.

66 Name: KazeYami : 2010-12-08 06:02 ID:xzG4SGDr

Uhm. Let's see...

My strengths are somewhat strange. I tend to get a lot of compliments on having certain characters 'in character'. But, I realize that most of these comments come for my lovely little twat teenage characters (such as Artemis Fowl or Severus Snape). I'm terribly good at writing snippy, angsty, intelligent teenagers. I also get compliments (and warnings) about how in detail / graphically I describe things. Though I try to limit myself, because I could go on and on with my descriptions, I still tend to come out with really blunt and tasteful descriptions. I'm a tiny bit proud of that. >///>

My weaknesses suck pretty bad. I've noticed that I tend to write the same kind of story over and over again. Even though nobody has pointed it out yet, I just chock that up to the fact I never write two stories for the same fandom (so, my fans never carry over to any other stories I write). Also, I screw up sentence structure, and repeat words, and switch names periodically. I tend to stop to clarify a thought in the middle of writing a sentence. Then, when I go back to continue writing, I'll pick up the sentence a few words back. So, the sentence will look like, "And then, Hermione thought about thought about her likeliness to get major frizz in the the morning." Poopins. And, i never see it until I read the chapter over the next day.

>>61 Elkkun! >o> Imma read some of your stories. I'm intrigued. But, I'm in school right now, so I can't look it up. I'll google stalk you when I get home. So, yes. Note to self, stalk this person. >o

70 Name: Bozphin : 2010-12-16 10:53 ID:as0ZZyUZ

Strengths
-I am told that I am good at keeping in character.
-I believe I am good at balancing moods. Like if I have a lot of angsty and tragic parts then I try to add a little humor and romance as well. I always designate a character for comic relief. XD

Weakness
-I have the tendancy to start a story and then get bored with it...just for the plain fact that I don't usually get reviews right away. I actually think I write more and better when I get reviews no matter it they are good or bad...as sad as that sounds.
-I AM A PROCRASTINATOR! :(
-I write too fast and make a lot of mistakes, I'm trying to slow down and actually reread the entire chapter before submitting it.
-Once I start writing I can't end with just a few chapters...All my stories so far have over 25 chapters. So you can imagine how long it takes to crank these stories out.

77 Name: Piccylo : 2010-12-16 15:07 ID:3w9jYajy

Strengths
-I have a decent understanding of grammar and a broad vocabulary.
-I am able to present things in an original method of word combination.
-I think and research a lot.
-Keeping in character is good.
-If I'm in the mood to write, I can write a lot.

Weaknesses
-I will get tripped up by thinking about something later in a story, causing writer's block on a current part.
-I rarely proofread until after something is posted.
-My influences infect my writing in a way less than subtle. For instance, if I've been reading Heinlein, the dialogue becomes incredibly snarky.
-Since I'm a relatively unemotional person, sometimes I have a hard time trying to figure out someone would really react to a certain situation.
-If I'm not in the mood to write, another chapter can take literally months... sometimes longer concerning the fic.

Losing the plot if I don't write it down.
Losing interest
Not writing unless I'm in the mood (a rare occurence)

81 Name: Anonymous : 2010-12-17 10:04 ID:hGOD6MMh

(... I guess I should start whitening my teeth. Where are those adverts on FF.net when you want them? They had an interesting one involving a house wife and... lemon juice, I think it was; damn, I should have clicked when I had the chance... oh well, more fool me, I guess...)

82 Name: Chris000 : 2010-12-17 12:10 ID:uN/LBjKz

I am very strong at creating a plot, weaving two worlds together, creating dozens of OCs (some of which who don't survive), yet at the same time still giving them significance in a series, technical descriptions, sophisticated wording, and visceral combat scenes.

Now, my weaknesses can be redundancy and wordiness mainly. These were issues for me all my life and I have been trying hard to improve this. I think I am on the right track. Some times when writing, I seem to put a bit of filler here and there. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing like a fill occasionally, but I seem to be taking less away from the plot and more time for the characters getting to know each other.

Actually, I would class that one as a neutral point.

83 Name: Gabi1999 : 2010-12-21 11:11 ID:W9Pyvhfb

Strengths
I have a broad vocabulary and a good eye for detail.

Weaknesses
I have an iffy sense of grammar.
I tend to envision a single image in my stories either the beginning or the middle i then write up to the image and can't figure out an ending...fail.
If i read shakespeare then i will write like shakepeare for the next three chapters of my story.

84 Name: NamineInWonderland : 2010-12-21 12:32 ID:Qx4lIqwV

My strengths would be that I have good grammar, spelling, and sentence structure. I also come up with some pretty interesting story ideas.
Some weaknesses would be that I start a story and don't get a lot of feedback on it, and I think people must not like it all that much, so I discontinue it. Another is that I could be way heavy into a story and then something else will come knock on the door that is my life and I'll completely forget about my writing. And sometimes, sadly, my forgetfulness lasts for months.

85 Name: Smile : 2011-01-20 18:01 ID:psLl2kqS

Weakness: I suck at spelling, get a bit too whimsical with my plots (aka unrealistic), and hate to write about settings. And, as with most high school students, I can't quite figure out when a comma is necessary.

Strength: Dialogue and grammar.

Strengths:

  1. One-shots
  2. Grammar
  3. My plots are original
  4. Diaologue is beleivable
  5. Plot development in SHORT stories
  6. Humor
  7. Angst
  8. I set the mood pretty well.
  9. I'm good at sifting out parts of my story that don't need to be there.
  10. Emotion

Weaknesses:

  1. Plot development in LONG stories-I tend to get off tangent
  2. My stories often come out rushed
  3. OC's tend to lean towards being Sues. I never create HUGE Sues, but they always come out kinda Jerk Sueish, and since I always try to give my characters a sympathetic edge...well, sometimes I overdue it.
  4. Fight scenes
  5. Physical descriptions-I NEVER use them, because everytime I've tried, it's been horrible, so I leave it up to the imaginations of my readers.
  6. Whenever I focus too much on details, it ends up sounding cliched, but when I DON'T focus on details, I feel like it's not detailed enough.
  7. I'm sometimes wordy and redundant
  8. Prone to writer's block
  9. I easily get bored with writing long chapter stories; my only good writing is done when a plot bunny hits me.
  10. Because of 9, I don't really map out my stories. I just write it.

89 Name: Beautiful Tenshi : 2011-03-20 17:51 ID:5ALfRA44

90 Name: Red : 2011-03-22 09:06 ID:3qWSkptH

My strengths:

1) I know my characters well.
2) I know their situations well.
3) I know my settings well.
4) I don't mind doing a lot of research (need the exact weight of a cubic foot of cow leather or the exact process of getting rocks out the ground and turning them into metal? I've got it written down around here somewhere...)
5) It may take a while, but once I get started I can write very quickly for long periods of time. I once wrote a 20k word story in four days, and it was shock, horror GOOD...! Didn't need much editing either.
6) I've been told my REAL villains are horrifying.
7) I can take a plot point and just run with it.
8) Also, i cna spel gud an haf descent grammer.

My weaknesses:

1) I know all these things about my story so well that I unconsciously assume the readers pick up on them too, and so don't bother with putting in enough description.
2) I get in a rush to get everything written down so I don't forget it later, but I rarely get around to doing a real second draft.
3) I am prone to distraction.
4) I don't mind doing a lot of research, but then I will miss some vital detail and not realize it.
5) I hate to edit. Once the story is written down, it's finished in my mind and I want to move on to something else.
6) Lack of detail (due to speed of writing I guess)
7) I don't take criticism well, and already know about most of the things they point out anyway.
8) I tend to repeat my wording.
9) My wording gets repeated.
10) My wording? Often repeated.
11) I have too many ideas, and they often trample over each other, so I have trouble finishing stories that I start, which is why I've only posted a few at FFN. I try to only post stories I've already finished because of this.

I must say one of my weaknesses is background research when dealing with things such as medical/metal conditions (anorexia, hospital procedures, etc) if I include them. Another is procrastinating; I leave a story for slightly too long, get bored, forget the plot, and never finish.

My strong point in my opinion is that I know my fandom/characters pretty well and can usually write them well enough that they aren't stupidly OOC. I'm also told (by teachers/parents/friends/reviewers)I have a good writing style, and that I can write with proper grammar and usually with good spelling (except those annoying typos I come across often) and good sentence/paragraph/overall structure.

Strong:
-I can write pretty well
-Good vocab
-I know the background of what I'm writing really well.
-I can fold up a nice long story
-Can write a good setting
-Dialogue

Weak:
-Ideas can get redundant
-Most of my OC's are similar in personality...since they pretty much reflect on me in some way.
-Laziness (Well, it does sorta count.)
