New York Fan-comics Team (159)

Once we have enough people here who are from New York, I think that it should not be difficult for us to start a fan-comics group somewhere around New York.

Of course, the first questions are, exactly when should the first meeting be, and exactly where should the first meeting be for this fan-comics group? It should be a place that many people would be able to reach easily, of course, at a time when people are not too busy.

2 Name: MeowChan16 : 2010-09-21 12:47 ID:L5QiLsRU

All right, well, I'm a high school student, so weekends are best for me. The closest big city to me is NYC, but I'd be willing to go farther. As for when, I don't know. I can't drive yet and public transit isn't an option, so I probably wouldn't be able to make the meetings for a while (unless I could get a friend to drive me). What about you guys?

3 Name: SephiriaEvangeline : 2010-09-21 14:07 ID:xlIEAMVa

I agree with MeowChan16. I too am I high-school student who can't drive yet, and there are still other commitments that I have that might occupy my weekends. I'll probably only be able to go if a parent drives me, and only if my brother's don't have anything on that date too.

4 Name: A Skylit Drive : 2010-09-21 14:58 ID:ijTP6DnJ

I'm a freshman in highschool, so weekends would also be great for me, but I also take piano and dance so my weekends are kinda packed. I'm not sure how i will be able to get anywhere far into the city.

5 Name: deadliving : 2010-09-21 16:04 ID:eaJVebEu

I have a hectic job, but I'll try to come whenever it's scheduled

6 Name: Sasue : 2010-09-21 16:49 ID:V0WfOXZ8

If we do have a group meeting, where exactly will it take place?

7 Name: ShadowMaiden : 2010-09-21 17:27 ID:rXD8uIA3

I'm a high school student also, so weekends would be good. All I would need is for one of my parents to drive me.

8 Name: Sora-chan18 : 2010-09-21 18:41 ID:fPMlktga

I'm also a high school student, so weekends would definitely be the best. I think that if we're going to meet in the city we should decide whether it would be good to meet downtown (perhaps near union square, since that is a major station), midtown (42nd street/times square) or uptown (either 86th, 96th, 125th street on either the west or eat side, whichever is more convenient). Also what would be a good day/ time to meet? In the morning (anywhere from 9:00-11:00) or in the afternoon (anywhere from 12:00 to 5:00)? As for the location of the first meeting, we can meet up at a major subway station/landmark or we could meet up by a large starbucks or barnes and nobles. And maybe you guys should list the dates in which your available and any other suggestions you might have.

I'm grouped in with the other members. I am a high-school student, who sometimes has free weekends, sometimes not.

The biggest question here is: where? Every place that Sora-chan18 has listed, I can reach easily. To the other people who posted here, is that possible for YOU?

I can meet either mornings or afternoons, and after the weekend of Oct. 8th through 10th, my weekends should be totally free.

Also, I think it would be best to meet—if possible—at the front of Borders, downtown New York City, on 34th street.

It's a public place, with a large store front, so depending on how many of us there are; this would be the perfect place in my opinion.

Any other suggestions?

I myself am in college at Marist in Poughkeepsie, New York. Trying to get INTO NYC wouldn't be too hard, but I'd need to set some things up first. I'd need cab and train fare, for starters...and we still need to think up a place. I'm open to the Borders, personally. Or maybe Central Park?

14 Name: LotusHana◆9Zi3JIOXNs : 2010-09-23 13:23 ID:OOTkIOBp

Like most of the other people on this thread, I'm also a high school student and is only avaliable during the weekends. Preferably, I think we should meet up at Central Park, because it's a lot more spacious for a group of people. Though it really depends on exactly how many people are near NYC.

15 Name: SephiriaEvangeline : 2010-09-23 15:33 ID:xlIEAMVa

I too am a high school student that is only available on some weekends. I'd also prefer to meet in either Central Park or in front of the Borders on 34th street, but just like S.S., I can go to pretty much every place that was listed by Sora-chan18. As for the time, as long as I can actually go the day of the meeting, I'll be able to go either in the morning or afternoon.

16 Name: curlscat : 2010-09-23 18:14 ID:8UYq4Doo

Again, I'm in high school. Central park would be best for me, because I rarely go into the city, and I would like someplace VERY easy to find. Afternoons would be better for me, as long as they're weekend afternoons.

17 Name: sasunaru-chan : 2010-09-23 19:38 ID:e1fPWQ+J

Times square! :D haha, yeah im in high school too but i would need to know a bit more than a week ahead of time, and it'd have to be on weekends. The biggy for me is just getting a ride to the city cause i live like 2 hours away from nyc :/

18 Name: Sora-chan18 : 2010-09-23 19:43 ID:iCJDcj3N

I like the Borders or Central Park idea (although Central park would have to depend on the weather) and I do prefer the afternoons. Also if it were to happen in Central park, where in Central Park would we meet?

19 Name: S.S. : 2010-09-24 17:17 ID:JiUCD/qR

If we did go to Central Park, we'd need to find somewhere in Central park that is easy to find, like a playground or something.

Has anyone thought of a date? If we do go in the afternoon, how does two o' clock sound to you all?

~S.S.

Also, I think that it would be good for there to be a sign to recognize each other, in case there are many others there as well.

21 Name: ShadowFireFox13 : 2010-09-25 13:36 ID:VfIN24zC

I'm a college student and sometimes I am free friday, saturday and sunday. I like the central park idea and the borders idea. If this is going to be done in central park what part because I just know were the baseball field, tennis courts and handball are. Also how would we recognize each other should we have signs.

22 Name: Sasue : 2010-09-25 15:00 ID:V0WfOXZ8

Oh yes, i like the sign idea. what should they look like? Although there should be a specific spot we should meet in, with an adress and everything. Senior in Highschool

23 Name: S.S. : 2010-09-26 19:23 ID:0+XUqzzh

For the idea of having a sign, I would suggest something simple. Maybe two people can bring a simple sign (or decorated if you want) that says 'FanBBS NYC Group' or 'Fanfiction Writers Here!'

In Central Park, I think it would be best to meet at a specific entrance, rather than somewhere deep in the park. I'm not sure exactly where the sports section is, but if it's close to an entrance, I think that would be our best option. Does anyone know if there is a picnic area? I think that would be one of the best places to meet up.

~S.S.

24 Name: deadliving : 2010-09-26 19:35 ID:eaJVebEu

I agree with SS and Anon. 'FF Writers' should Be an identifying sign.
I'm probably the youngest here, but I guess I can come with someone.
I only have one slight problem: What if us authors don't enjoy each other's interests.
We wouldn't want a Trekkie or a Gleek coming to a Happy Tree Friends or Twilight majority meeting.
If you are planning on going, I think we should find a common interest, something common, Hetalia, StarWars, The Simpsons.

I am interested in Happy Tree Friends, Harry Potter, Rammstein, The Oblongs, Ugly Americans, and Hetalia, with some random other things sprinkled in.

Remember, this is supposed to be a fan-comics group, not a group of fanfiction writers. "Fanfiction Writers Here" will not fit. Neither will "FanBBS NYC Group."

A much more appropriate sign would be "NYC Fan-comic Group."

A simple solution (I have told this solution to some others, but I think that it would be good to tell this to everyone):

Well, I think that what fandom the fan-comic would be about could rotate each time - even if not everybody is familiar with the same fandoms, it could be a good opportunity learn about each other's, right? It would probably be about the most common fandom at first, but perhaps each new fan-comic could be about a different fandom each time, to give each person's fandom a chance, so that perhaps eventually, everybody is familiar with everybody else's fandoms - how does that sound?

27 Name: Anonymous : 2010-09-26 19:48 ID:ZfkGAIkQ

To be more specific about how >>26 will work:

As mentioned earlier, the fandom of the fan-comic could rotate each time. I think that perhaps the person (or persons) who is familiar with it could just give a quick explanation of the story and of the characters of the original - I don't think it would be necessary for everybody to have seen the original in order to work on the fan-comic, as long as one person is familiar with the original. What do everyone think?

28 Name: SephiriaEvangeline : 2010-09-26 19:59 ID:xlIEAMVa

I agree with Anonymous
as long as a quick explanation of the story is given, i think people will be able to catch up with the storyline

Central Park seems like a lovely idea. Great way to attract other artists and writers, and btw, Anonymous, I think your club would gain more publicity and members if it were not limited to Fan-comics alone. Fanfiction writers could collaborate with said Fan-comickers and create more comics, don't you think?

33 Name: 123NaruHinaFan : 2010-09-28 13:22 ID:Z5s43qEp

I agree with Anonymous aswell. ^^

34 Name: Reimeiko-Chan : 2010-09-28 13:24 ID:vJpYVKNG

Also you might want to consider a more organized, user friendly site, I'm sure that there are web designers among us, including myself. I also wouldn't mind designing a club dedicated to NYC Fan-Comic Team.

35 Name: Anonymous : 2010-09-28 13:38 ID:ZfkGAIkQ

True, but perhaps it might be best to start with fan-comics first - other things can come later.

36 Name: Reimeiko-Chan : 2010-09-28 13:41 ID:vJpYVKNG

Hopefully there won't be any confusion about that when the club is opened.

37 Name: Sora-chan18 : 2010-09-28 19:27 ID:PfX4Hjd4

To continue on S.S's idea yes there is a picnic area in Central Park (it is also near a playground) right next to the Great Lawn, which is near the Belvedere Castle (roughly on 84th street). It would also be helpful if everyone listed the dates that they are available, so that we could meet and work out all the logistics of our fan-comics group. I happen to be free on all of the saturdays for the month of October except the 16th. Two in the afternoon also works well for me.

38 Name: LotusHana : 2010-09-29 03:48 ID:wRZ4+bSc

I am only avaliable after October 16th. Any date before that I will be too busy to attend. Any time in the afternoon works for me, preferably around three.

Hi. I was directed here and thought it would be cool to join. I'm a college student and normally have Fridays and Weekends off unless something comes up. I'm free to go where I please in the five boroughs. I like the idea of meeting in Central Park since it's right by my college.

40 Name: S.S. : 2010-09-29 19:05 ID:0+XUqzzh

I agree with Sora-chan18 for the place of choice. I'm pretty much free. If anyone posts a specific time, unless I say otherwise, I'll probably free.

As for the fandom problem, I believe we should make a list of fandoms we are very familiar with, as well what SephiriaEvangeline was saying. A brief explanation would be fantastic.

Also, I think we should have the meeting as soon as possible, since the colder the weather gets, the less likely people would be able to come.

I agree with Anonymous as long as a quick explanation of the story is given, i think people will be able to catch up with the storyline. It would be a better idea to have Fanfiction writers and Fan-comickers to collaborate so I agree with Reimeiko-Chan on that. Central Park is a good idea as well because it has lots of room but if it rain what should be the backup plan is there any bookstores around. I normally have Fridays and Weekends off unless something comes up but this week and next week I have exams and midterms do to plus projects. Im putting a link up for my fanfiction account in case anyone need to contact me. We should have a way to contact each other for example by email.

2nd. I'm vote Wednesdays, after 5PM. That's when I get off work. (Or I can try sneaking out during lunch hour). Either that or weekends I guess -- school, probably like everyone else here.
3rd. Library -- I'm guessing it's the little public one across the street from the giant lion statued one?

I think Kinokuniya Bookstore across the street from Bryant Park would be perfect for such an event. They hold similar clubs and events there. From time to time they hold and Anime club there. Perhaps something could be worked out there?

60 Name: darkshadow : 2010-10-24 05:52 ID:DQ8UNLmx

I think it should be Brooklyn Public Library. Central Park and Bryant Park are good options too.

Apparently I have to take back what I said earlier, since it appears I'm not going to have that much free time. If I do have the time though, I prefer if we go to the Brooklyn Public Library, since I'm more close to that library. The other places I haven't heard of.

The question is, which Brooklyn Public Library? There are many Brooklyn Public Libraries.

63 Name: Nicole : 2010-10-24 11:26 ID:8jmw+Yj+

Possibly at the central library in brooklyn, NY. It is large and has multiple floors. Maybe around Novmeber 22 or 23 or on a Saturday. I'm a student and take extra classes on Sunday so I am only free on Saturdays

Hi. (I'm super new. And in middle school. 8th though.)

Anyway, (through a long series of pm'ing) my friend asked me to join this group/club.

I live in NYC, Brooklyn to be more exact. I'm not great at drawing, but I'd like to try my hand at it.
(After reading through the posts,) I kind of agree with some of the people that the library is most likely a great place we can all meet.
The Grand Central library is a great resource place, (my LA teacher took us on a trip there,) and there are a couple of areas in the lobby that we can meet and talk without getting yelled at.

The weekend would be an ideal meeting time, but obviously, not everyone has the time to go. So-maybe two meetings with someone willing to go on both days to inform the group or just pick a day where most of the people can meet.

66 Name: onyxfire : 2010-10-25 06:46 ID:3DPNozlD

Alrighty, so I tried posting a new thread on accident. (FAIL) Anyway, so I noticed everyone here seems to be from NYC. So here's the question. Should there be more fan-comics teams in NY, or just one? If just one, then I propose we meet in a more central, easier accessed by everyone, area of the state. (I hope this makes sense, as I am half asleep right now) I live in Western NY, so it would be very hard for me to go to many meetings, and I would love to be involved! I'm probably not the only one, so ideas?

67 Name: Miranda◆1.MyADZB0Q : 2010-10-26 14:36 ID:Yy0EOUlm

I agree with onyxfire. Where do you live? It'll take about six hours if you live on the other side of the state.
However, there are two sides to the coin. If a lot of people live in NYC, and everyone has to go to the middle of the state, say three hours, then it'd be more hectic for everyone.
I realize NY state is such a small place...
(When is the official meeting date? I'm guessing location is something to be decided.)

68 Name: Anonymous : 2010-10-26 18:40 ID:ZfkGAIkQ

>>67
I am guessing it would be a Saturday or Sunday of November - the question is, which one?

69 Name: onyxfire : 2010-10-26 19:47 ID:w5W9QrvG

I live in Rochester. It would be INSANE for me to have to go all the way across the state for a meeting that would last only how long? I couldn't even do it once a month, which was the timing I heard suggested. Plus, I can't even drive, and I doubt my parents would be very amiable to driving all the way to NYC for this. I agree with Miranda, that it would be hectic for everyone to drive several hours to the middle of the state. Which is why I'm thinking maybe there should be more than one in the state?

70 Name: Anonymous : 2010-10-26 21:28 ID:ZfkGAIkQ

Yes, there definitely should be more than one, although I think that the one in NYC can start first before others follow.

I'd hate to sound mean, but I agree with >>70 .
With >>68 , I think it should be Nov. twenty-first or fourteenth. Or the Saturdays before the dates I mentioned.

So though, the Grand Central Library? (Apparently, there are meeting rooms there.)

Hm,I like this whole idea so far,I do see potential and in New York it should be easier.Though, for me to go there I to take a train and taxi,I mean I live in New Jersey, and yeah it's the next state over, but still a little far to travel
TwT And I'm sure their are other people who live farther then me who have to go across the state to get here.

High five! I was also talking to Yoshino in Moonlight4.

Anyway, I realize that not everyone has a flexable schedule. I'm not free Sundays, but most people are.
For majority's sake, I think that the 21st is ideal, if everyone can make it. The place would be the Brooklyn Public Library, main branch-Grand Army Plaza. Time would be after lunch, about 1/2-3/4/5, depending on the length of this meeting. (This is New York City.)

So, that's pretty much my conclusion.

However, I think that it would be best to decide on the date of the meeting at least 1 week before the date of the actual meeting - at this short of a notice, most people won't make it. Perhaps this should be pushed back one week - how does the 28th of November sound to everyone?

79 Name: Anonymous : 2010-11-27 22:22 ID:fBEf6i5c

It seems like nobody is affirming any meeting date as of yet, but I think that it would be beneficial to decide on this earlier rather than later. So I think that the first meeting should take place on Sunday, December 12th.

So, is December 12th okay for at least many of you, or is there a better day for this?

80 Name: ngrey651 : 2010-11-29 09:55 ID:wUnz8666

I think I'm fine with December 12th, but what time would it be? Maybe we should all meet at the library at noon? Is that a good time?

81 Name: Anonymous : 2010-11-29 10:04 ID:ZfkGAIkQ

I think that perhaps 1:00 might be the best time, but I am not entirely sure.

82 Name: Anonymous : 2010-11-29 20:20 ID:ZfkGAIkQ

Also, just in case some people don't know where this would be at, here is the location:

Place: Brooklyn Central Library
10 Grand Army Plaza

83 Name: Sasue : 2010-11-30 15:41 ID:V0WfOXZ8

How about the 18th?

84 Name: Anonymous : 2010-11-30 17:24 ID:ZfkGAIkQ

>>83
Of course, that might be a better day.

85 Name: Draconite : 2010-11-30 19:05 ID:yjnuzJfw

I don't think I'll be able to make the twelfth, but possibly the eighteenth.

86 Name: Rowan : 2010-12-01 03:47 ID:rHMBL1QR

Hey! I'm new, just finished talking to Yoshino, thought I'd say hi. I could come to a December meeting if it's before the 17th-- I fly home for the holidays then, and that's several states away.

87 Name: MeteorBlackDRagon : 2010-12-02 12:42 ID:X1ceZTKy

Well I think I could make it on December 12th, so how will we recognize each other?

88 Name: ngrey651 : 2010-12-04 12:35 ID:JJ+NVG62

Unfortunately I've been given Jury Duty. With LUCK, I'll just have to show up for one day because of something simple like a civil suit at Enfield. Otherwise...I can't make it.

89 Name: Clow Angel : 2010-12-04 16:31 ID:4av1HcVE

Hello, new here. Been exchanging PMs with Yoshino. I'm a bit tentative about this, but I'd like to at least give it a shot. I'm not a high school student, but being a college student gives me just as hectic a schedule.

If we are to meet, I'm also going to vote for the 18th. Unfortunately, Brooklyn is a bit far for me. Living in Queens and without a car, I'm kind of not willing to travel two hours to go to a meeting that will be who knows how long or short.

90 Name: PureWaterLily : 2010-12-04 19:22 ID:MpxU5as+

Requirements for me:

  1. Saturday, Sunday, Wednesday (1 hour at noon -- must be near Soho)
  2. Please keep it to Central. I'd usually prefer Upper, but central is more ideal since we're all over the place.
  3. For those that don't know, central park is huge. Library. Bookstore. Easily markable location where it is near impossible to miss one another. PUBLIC and surrounded by PEOPLE (please no dark alleys).

Suggestions:

  1. We all wear something that IDs us, so we don't have to approach random strangers and ask "hey, you part of our fanfic/manga/whatever group?" Something like wearing red shirts, etc.
  2. I'm guessing this might take all day, so it'd be even better if we were all near a food place, so we could continue conversations/exchanges over burgers and coffee. :D

There is no possible way I can check this every day. Once a date and time has been determined, please email me at cokefloaty15@gmail.com. Feel free to contact me. Also, if you would give me all your emails too, that would be more efficient communication (create separate email if you care about privacy).

And as for us being complete strangers to one another (paranoid), I do hope I can get some idea of who I'm meeting. Me: High School student. Girl. Kinda-sorta geeky, obnoxious attitude. You have been warned.

91 Name: Rowan : 2010-12-05 03:09 ID:rHMBL1QR

If we have some people unable to make the 12th and some unable to make the 18th, would it be possible to meet up on Sat the 11th? Also, what's the skill makeup of this group? Who among us are writers, who are artists? I'm primarily a writer but I am capable of drawing very badly if it's absolutely necessary. But if we haven't got any artists at all, then we may want to wait for a meetup until we do. An orgy of writers wouldn't be very productive.

92 Name: darkshadow : 2010-12-05 13:33 ID:DQ8UNLmx

I'm both a writer and a artist. I'm very good at both.

93 Name: sora-chan18 : 2010-12-06 21:04 ID:ur2HSF7M

I can't go the 12th but I can the 18th, and I'm more of an artist than a writer. Also where exactly would we all meet?

94 Name: Anonymous : 2010-12-06 23:40 ID:ZfkGAIkQ

Well, we do need to quickly decide on a meeting location. Are there any libraries near Central Park?

95 Name: Anonymous : 2010-12-07 17:02 ID:ZfkGAIkQ

Okay, how about the library on 96th street?

Here is information about it:
http://www.nypl.org/locations/96th-street

And this would be the location:
Address: 112 East 96th Street (Near Lexington Ave.)
Map: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=112%20E%2096th%20St,%20New%20York,%2010128&um=1&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl

What does everyone else think about this location?

96 Name: Icestorm51 : 2010-12-07 17:06 ID:F6LFT5ho

I can most likely go on any day on the weekends. As posted above, I'd like to not meet in any suspicious places such as dark alleys, anonymous coffee shops, etc. More likely a big library or perhaps a popular but not to crowded restaurant.
I'm more of a writer than an artist, but my friend who I'm bringing is the opposite.
Also, the identification idea is good. Should we just have like a color or outfit that we all wear? Or perhaps just walk around carrying something strange so people will recognize us.
Any ideas? Email me at Zmalzone51@gmail.com

97 Name: Icestorm51 : 2010-12-07 18:25 ID:F6LFT5ho

I like the above location. :D

98 Name: sora-chan18 : 2010-12-07 20:30 ID:fjOOXmcx

The library on 96th sounds good.

99 Name: Clow Angel : 2010-12-09 07:45 ID:LerQVtF7

That sounds perfect. I can totally go to that library, and I'm up for the 18th.

As for areas of expertise, I'm more of a graphic designer. I, of course, also write. I'm fairly decent at drawing, but it's not the anime and manga type drawing though if I have to, I can do those too. Except I'd be better at designing.

Hm, the identification sounds tricky. Wearing 'red shirts' is kind of out. It's freaking cold. We're all gonna be bundled up in coats. I'm not sure how many people own a red coat, but I don't.

I dunno, we can all upload a certain MP3 to our phones and play the music out loud? Well, actually that's bad. We're meeting up in a Library.

100 Name: Rowan : 2010-12-09 20:53 ID:rHMBL1QR

I can't make it to the 18th so I'll just go to the next meeting, but for identification perhaps you could do something like wear mismatched gloves? A little weird, maybe, but very identifiable and still relatively subtle.

101 Name: Icestorm51 : 2010-12-09 20:55 ID:F6LFT5ho

That's actually a really good idea. ^^^^ Shall we do so?

102 Name: Oceanviewluffy : 2010-12-10 18:55 ID:v5LrRdg0

I'm up for the 18th as well!

Well...since its a library...why don't we lurk around the manga section. We can always regroup at table later, and keep checking the manga section for people who come later.

Also odd clothing helps....anyone up for crazy hairstyles or anime t-shirts?

103 Name: Icestorm51 : 2010-12-10 19:55 ID:F6LFT5ho

How many people went to ComicCon? We could wear out ComicCon passes.

104 Name: PureWaterLily : 2010-12-11 15:56 ID:MpxU5as+

I can make it the 18th but I might not reach there till 4PM. Speaking of which... time?

107 Name: CouchPotato121 : 2010-12-15 13:04 ID:fZFdrbHy

I will be able to make it, but what number ave on 96th east or west? Is there a definitive identification for those who are going to be there yet? Otherwise I'll be in the manga section. Is there also a definitive time?

I really can't go, (freaking mothers...) but looking at this post, I'll just set a date and place, then you guys can change it.

If a lot of people can make it, the 18th of this December, at the above library, (or central, most likely above, I guess, whichever one, where most people are.)

111 Name: CouchPotato121 : 2010-12-15 21:40 ID:fZFdrbHy

Oh for those who don't know me I've been recruited by Yoshino in the Moonlight4 and have been talking with them for a while.

So 96th and Lexington library at 1 in the afternoon.

What should be our identifier? We need a definitive answer to get this started otherwise this will not move. Any suggestions, because I have a long dark red coat that I will be wearing anyway.

We should also find a place in the front of the building where we can all meet instead of wandering around.

112 Name: Anonymous : 2010-12-15 23:15 ID:fBEf6i5c

There is probably a main entrance, so probably just inside the main entrance should be fine as a waiting-spot.

umm... I can't make it, Family issue.

I'm here at the library now, look for a person wearing a Playboy Bunny hat!

118 Name: Anonymous : 2010-12-18 11:43 ID:fBEf6i5c

I think that it is most likely that nobody was able to go, so there was no meeting today - we will have to pick another day and try again.

So, how does Saturday, January 8th, 2011 sound?

119 Name: MeteorBlackDRagon : 2010-12-18 11:44 ID:gF46pkCD

Yup, if you see me, ask me "What I think about Sai from Naruto", my response will be, "He freaks me the fuck out!"
