it really gets me frusterated when you see people read your stories but don't review. It really gets me going if i get a review, so i don't get why so many don't review. I love reviews, even if they are critical. You?
Oh, I know! It's really lame to see that you've gotten, say, fifteen hits and only three reviews! Ugh, I hate it when that happens. What's really annoying is if lots of people not only read your story, but add it to their favourite/alert list as well and don't bother to leave a review. >: It's so irritating!
Aaand this is on 'Self-Intros'...why, exactly?
Shrugs I didn't put it here ^?^
Reviews are wonderful. Even if it's just two words!
I agree T_T
Well, I hate it when I post a chapter and the first review I get says "Update!", that's annoying. Or onetime I got a review telling me how awful the fandom as a whole is. I like reviews that actually say something, not just pointless babble and such. ^?^
my latest one shot
246 hits 5 review :/
at least they are all good review!
my 17 chapters story finished
15,856 hits 127 reviews.
again the difference is frustrating TT_TT
Yeah. I sometimes have hardly any hits, but about 1 review every 5... but mostly the opposite: many hits, no reviews. I really get annoyed when these reviews (the little I get) are like these:
Update soon! ...when it has been finished, and mentioned so.
Great! ...that leave sme wondering if you have actually read anything in some way.
I make sure always to leave interesting reviews which the person recieving them will smile and I know that I made their day. I also feel so happy when I get a good review like that.
And if I get more hits than reviews, I feel happy that so many people are reading it. Optimism!
It just makes my day if I have a review. ^^ I nearly had a heart attack when I had 20 reviews on a story. To those good people who review, I tip my imaginary hat to you.
Still, I'll take anything, so hits and favorites are loved as well...just not as much as reviews. =P
I personally think that reviews are appreciated at all times, even a while after they were posted.
I do love getting reviews. Even if it's just a few words telling me they liked the story, that's plenty for me. If it's something that tells me what parts of the story in particular they liked and what I could possibly have worked on, even better, because constructive criticism is great, and so is a review telling what exactly were the strong parts.
It's a tad frustrating when people just add your story to favorites without leaving a review, but I guess on the other hand, it's also rather flattering. Almost as good as a review, I guess. XD
Agh. I hate it when people alert/favorite without actually reviewing, I know I should think of it in a positive light, but I wish that they'd just leave a review. I appreciate any review I get, even if they are just "great, please update!" on oneshots. ^^ Because at least they liked it, right?
I do wish that people actually reviewed though, not just a few words like "that was good." I haven't gotten a good constructive review in a while. While my reviews are defenitely not the longest ones out there, I think that they are more helpful than many and I point out both good and bad points.
Hits... I've gotten 1.7 k for a 6 chapter fic with 26 reviews... that's about 1 out of every 65th person reviewing. Not very heart-lifting, eh? o.o;
Aghhhh! I love getting reviews, I swear I do, but the majority or my reviews consist of one or two words, which happen to be :
"Update!" or "Write more!"
I've gotten 5 or so real reviews where people do into depth on why they like my stories, but only got those because I hinted to the readers that I write faster is motivated by great reviews. Heheh. Sneaky....
I absoultly hate it when you see all the hits ya get, but no one reviews! I mean, c'mon! I get some 2 word reviews too, but most of mine are good job. XD I get some really funny ones too. For proof, read Unexpected Existence or Fate is Cruel. XD Sorry if i'm pushing, but honset.
I got this eveil flame once. Now i can't even write the story anymore because of it...i have yet to tell my fans...sigh It made me really mad!
I totally know what you mean. Especially in certain fandoms, it's annoying, since it's really popular, so you get a bunch of hits, but no one reviews in those for some reason.
I do prefer reviews myself, since it shows some thought, or some real appreciation of your effort. Unless, of course, there's an "Update soon" or "Good job" and nothing else.
What gets me more then the high amount of hits/favorites to reviews, is the fact that I've seen some really good stories get very few reviews, and then another fanfic which isn't as well written get tons of reviews.
Popularity doesn't equal quality is for sure. Beware younger fan based fandoms, as you'll find people cliquing there. Also, look out for people only reading because you've written about their favorite character, or pairing.
I leave reviews for nearly every fanfic I hit... however, the fact I am a critiquer doesn't go over well with some people.
...I recognize u. Yemi Hikari....you reviwed one of my fics and it really made me feel bad, what you said. Secret of the Ouin, remember? Now i just can't even work on it....sobs I don't wanna be rude, but some people don't like that critique showing in their review section. the next time you do that, can u send me a PM or sumthin?
And i understand wat ya mean bout popularity and quality, and it isn't my best fics, but c'mon. as far as some people go,i'm still new here!
I don't wanna be rude, but some people just don't like that stuff. Sorry...
Oh yeah, reviews are so motivating! But I can't stand it when I get 20 story alerts and 3 reviews for a chapter. Even a simple, "Good job, update soon," would work. I'm not picky. xD
I get few if any reviews that are just 'update soon'. things that seem to get me reviews that are generally more personal and genuine:
Works for me, maybe you guys could try it? It gets some incredibly loyal readers who review every single chapter.
♥♥♥Amanda (lemme know if it works pps)
I personally feel that ppl have stop reading me so the reviews are 0>5 for each chap.
hits are way less than my other stories.
I totally thank personally by PM all my registered reviewers. But I do not use my A/Ns for thanking ppl because that is a benefit for writers who can put out 2500 words chapters and not the barely 4000 words I can manage the most. So because I need to keep my A/Ns as small as possible, with a small disclaimer, plus important notes such as explanation of thinks I have used [name places etc] or the translations for the Japanese terms I always use.
for example my latest update of a 4000 words, had important notes go up to 300 words[at the end of the story] and other 100 for Japanese words and disclaimer[at the beginning] which left about 3500 words of the actual story, so there are no big AN for me.
but Once in a while I thank everyone who keeps up with me, reading/reviewing etc.
>>22 I meant 25.000 words Chapters not 2.500
I try to review as often as possible nearly for every story that I read. I'll only refrain from doing so in a few specific occasions, but otherwise I find it polite to review and offer others your opinion.
And it goes without saying that I do indeed enjoy receiving reviews as well. I'm pleased to know that others are liking what I have to offer them in terms of writing. Still, the only time I'm not so glad is when someone is critical without any sympathy. I enjoy suggestions and constructive criticism (key word being constructive here) but if they just point out everything that's wrong with a story it makes me feel more hurt than just being suggested to.
But, to come to my final point, I do find it just common courtesy to review after reading a story. Even if you don't really like it, you could find something to say like "Nice Work" without getting too in depth. This is all just personal opinion though ^___^
I get your point, SierraKathleen. I try to do the same. One of my reviewers recommended her story to me, it wasn't the greatest, but I felt complied to since she reviewed mine. It was pretty vague, because I didn't want to offend her.
Once a person's review was saying that the story was pointless and that they couldn't continue because it was centered (my mistake =/), without even using proper grammar. It was a bit of a drabble story, too. They didn't even put any really constructive stuff. I'm glad that they were honest, I even sent them a message saying thanks, but it did ruin my day a bit. And even though I know it wasn't my best story, it was a bit offensive that they were reviewing like that to my story, compared to a lot of the bad spelling/grammar fics out there. (I'm sorry if I sound really egotistic there DX).
Sometimes however, I just can't review a story without being purely offensive. So I don't review, in fear of being called a flamer for pointing out that their spelling/grammar could use a lot of work.
I get what everyones saying, I've been doing these two new stories, and it looks like people love them. I've gotten over 100 hits on both of them... but I haven't gotten a single review.
Interesting topic. I've actually not paid too much attention to how many hits a story gets verses the review numbers. I write predominantly because I like to do it and not because of the feedback.
I find it more annoying that mediocre stories have many reviews when there are more well written pieces that go ignored. I fail to understand this phenomena. I've often wondered if it had to do with the age-group of the readers.
>>27.
Could be. There are a lot of fangirls (and boys, I guess) you just like x and don't even care that it's in character or not and if there's horrendous spelling/grammar. I think I'm young by fanfiction standards, but I actually do try to be IC and to use good spelling/grammar.
Other stories annoy me more than my own, I find. Because there are these insanely good fics out there, and a big chunk of them are not read in favor of charrie A and B going out together (and where it might not even be realistic according to the fandom.)
I personally always review any story I read, and especially any story that I add to my favorites/alerts list. That drives me crazier than anything else, is when someone adds me as a favorite or puts an alert on my story but never reviews it.
I usually reply to signed reviews as well, to than them for their interest.
I often put 'Thank you for reading the chapters already online, and especially for reviewing/favoriting/alerting and such; it means more to me than you could ever imagine.' at the beginning of the chapters and 'Thank you so much for reading!' at the bottom of every one. I sometimes add 'Reviews/Feedback welcome!', too.
And occasionally, when no one has really shown any interest, 'I would love to hear your thoughts/opinion or suggestios on this; constructive criticism is welcome if founded, too. You do not have to be registered/logged in to leave feedback.', but that happens rarely.
I'll never degrade myself to saying things like 'I shall not update until I have gotten x reviews.' That somehow would mean to me that I only go with quantity, and that basically the 'personality' of the ones who reviewed doesn't matter. I sometimes do add what I have mentioned before, but never shall I mentioned before. I may think by myself 'I'll update at so many reviews.' but I'll never say it. With me, it doesn't really matter. I most update when I have gotten something on it, whether that is alerts, favorites, or reviews. When I notice that there's been some activity, I'll mostly update. It however changes with fandom. If I'm aware that about 5 people are following this story, I'll most likely wait until I have seen activity that these five people have read it. I don't want to update too fast, and leave them having to plutter through the mass of updates. It changes, really; truth said: if I suddenly get an amazingly god review, I'll be more motivated to update soon.
Personally, I just write when I feel like writing, and update when each chapter is finished. Sure, it may make my update schedule a little...haphazard, but in the end I'm writing for me, and reviews, alerts, favourites, people reading my stories...they're just bonus. I'd still probably write without updating, if for some reason I couldn't access the internet or whatever.
This is why my friend joined the review revolution. She's been getting me to join it, slowly, and I only just noticed so a few days ago, when I read a really bad story, and reviewed it anyway!
@19 - I do remember that one. Was it simply because I left you a negative review that you quit writing that story, or was it because you realized it wasn't near as great of a story as you thought it was?
It clearly states on fanfiction.net, "Not all reviews will strictly praise the work. If someone rightfully criticizes a portion of the writing, take it as a compliment that the reviewer has opted to spend his/her valuable time to help improve your writing."
That means that even though people don't like critique, they are not allowed to tell people they only want praise on their fanfics. And the fact that you are asking for people NOT to leave negative comments, tells me, you don't really understand what I mean by popularity doesn't equal quality.
A LOT of people, are tierd of poor quality fanfics, getting praise that they really don't deserve, while theirs has a lack of reviews. That is what it means. It also drives people nuts, when people want a pat on the back, for everything they do, which is what you're basically asking.
I also wouldn't call you exactly a newbie to fanfiction either. You've got nine to ten fanfics under your belt, and getting close to being a year on fanfiction.net. Plus, the fact is, it is better to learn what works, and doesn't work, early on, rather then later on.
@21 -
@22 - It might have to do with the fact that you are writing in the Sailor Moon fandom, more then anything. Same as the Digimon fandom. Some are just... more popular then others. That, and you do write chapters that are 4,000 words in length. For some readers, that is actually a turn off. Though, at least it isn't 10,000 words per chapter, or something like that. I also thought that 0>5 was the average any author expects to get for fanfic, normally...
@25 - I've had reviewers recomend stories to me... even people via PM. I try to be polite and ask if they really want me too, because I am also a critiqer. They say go ahead, though some I don't think know really what they were asking for. I also had one person, that I had tried reading their fanfic a few times, and I was possibly a little brutal in my honesty as to why I couldn't read their fanfic. But I also didn't feel it was fair to lie to them. I think that was one of the ones that I didn't leave a review, because I didn't really now how to say something in the first place, and I wanted to try again later on, to see if it was just my mood at the time.
@26 - Sorry I don't know the fandoms. If I did, I would offer to read them, but thing is, I don't ever feel I really can give a fair review of fanfiction I don't know the fandom of.
@27 - I've talked to some people that come across such stories. They say, it is because they don't think it right to hurt people's feelings. However, I've always lived by the philosophy, not telling someone the truth, is a lot worse then telling them the truth they need to hear.
@28 - You should have seen the Shugo Chara fandom, back... oh, I would say 2008. It's not always just that they don't care, they clique together, and will gang up on anyone who talks negative, and simply will review any story someone writes, because they stick together. shudders I hope that is the ONLY time I feel like stopping from reading a fandom for awhile. It took a year or two... so it might have been 2007, or 2006. Not sure.
On that side. If you KNOW a fandom that is just starting out fanfiction wise, particularly fandoms that are geared towards possible, preteens (who shouldn't even be on the site), review all that you can. I am doing that for Yumiero Patissiere, for the purpose of hopefully preventing these girls from forming such cliques. Believe me... they only serve to feed the problem. :(
@30 - I satire a lot of things, so I am posting "I won't update until I get 0 reviews", and then putting the number of reviews I get in replacement, for the next chapter. Some of the people who know I satire problems in fanfiction, have had a hoot with it. Others... have missed the point I think...
@31 - I am glad. Though, I had a stagnat period of time, due to my move recently, I pretty much have the same thing. Unfortunatly, now I have notebooks of stuff I need to type up. LOl...
@32 - So, I'm guessing that by review revolution, you mean not just praising the work, but also letting the really bad stories know that you think they can do better. If so, I REALLY wish more people would do that.
>>33
http://www.fanfiction.net/anime/Sailor_Moon/10/0/1/1/0/520/527/0/0/1/
that is the fandom I'm writing and I'm not any different in length than every other writer there, except of course of my fav Author Feisu who is amazing in everything, plot, length, grammar/spelling she is just simply GREAT.
But if you see the length of the rest of the stories, they are as big as mine so not so much of a difference, yet they get 10+ reviews to their chapters. Actually what I have realized lately in my fandom and it pains me, is that ppl go for the stereotypical/safe plots[means Haruka as a lesbian who is so much of a man... and Michiru as straight who meets Haruka and turns gay in a night] no matter how much of OOC the character is.
which is also the reason I have stopped reading fics...
Wow, I agree with all of you.
Reviewing is .... confusing. Yes.
For me, I no longer go crazy if I don't get a million reviews that are always pretty much-
"LOVE IT, PLEASE CONTINUE"
Cause to me, that just says "I'm reviewing this cause your my friend, not because I actually like the story."
But anyways I guess all reviews come in handy sometimes so...
I agree! If you're going to take the time to read a story you might as well review. I mean is that not the reason we right? To see what people think? How do we know what they think if they do not speak their minds!?!
Jeez, -Sighs.- I simply do not understand. Even if its critisism it's still nice with the thought.
And saying:
"Please update."
IS NOT A FREAKING WORTH IT REVIEW. I want to shank all the people who do that!!!
Like this girl on my story Whirlwind, EVERY single freaking time she reviews its the SAME THING.
"Update soon."
She's lucky I don't know her! -Rips apart a phone book.- RAWR!
'"Please update."
IS NOT A FREAKING WORTH IT REVIEW. I want to shank all the people who do that!!!'
Eh, I once got a ":(" because I put my story off for a while.
I actually don't mind when I don't get many reviews. I'm one of those writers who likes to reply to EVERY review (well, the signed ones. I do what I can for the anon ones) so when i update a story and I have like 40 new reviews for that chapter, it gets a little...long. In fact, sometimes it takes me more time to reply to all my reviews than it does to write the damn chapter. On the other hand, I want some recognition guys. Which is why I don't mind just hearing that you faved my story. At least you cared enough for that.
>>36 Oh yes! There's one girl, and one every single story, her review is 'love it'. That too means to me that they are just reviewing because they're wanna be my friend. I don't really care about her reviews anymore. I don't even think she actually reads them before reviewing. It has happened that I put up quite a lengthy story that would take at least half an hour to read, and she already reviewed it after ten minutes or something. That disappoints me more than getting no reviews.
I recently got a review saying "Whoa, this is a straight copy from x's story. Same story, same length, same plotline. Only yours is riddled with grammar mistakes. That's just very cheap of you, Bola." I was seriously pissed off. I don't read others' stories if they're dealing with the same ideas I have to prevent that from happening. I have been plagiarized two times before with said person getting 40+ reviews and I none because she PMs every person she knows or who has ever reviewed/favorited to read it, and I refuse to lower myself to that. That's just sick. That's just... THAT'S CHEAP! Anyway... So I went to read the story the review had mentioned, and indeed I had read it (and reviewed), but after mine was finished, just to see how she had done it.
Is it impossible to have the same ideas as someone else without knowing when it is obvious what might have happened? Argh! Her story was 1500+ words. Mine was about 450. Same length, indeed. -rolls eyes- I know there were mistakes in grammar. That was only because no one wanted to beta read, even though I had contacted about everyone in the fandom. I had done my best to fix as much I could, but didn't have any idea where the mistakes were. If that makes sense... I personally think it was cheap of her to review anonymously so that I couldn't reply, and that she judged me without knowing me. She just called me cheap without knowing the way I do things. ARGH. Anyway, I did notice similarities with the author author's story, and PM'ed her to ask if it bothered her that my story had some resemblance. She didn't PM back. I took my responsibility and deleted it, since her story was up first, even though I didn't actually plagiarize anything.
Those are just reviews that make me very pissed off. Often enough, especially when I was a newbie at ff.net, I learned a lot from the critique I got. I must admit that I never liked getting them, but leanred to appreciate them later. I followed the advice given, and often the same readers came back later and praised my writing for it had improved a lot.
I just can't stand reviews like aformentioned, or readers who are just bound to say that this or that is unnecessary, creepy, confusing, awkward... whatever, and never can say something good about it.
Personally, I really enjoy getting reviews, but I'm also happy recieving any feedback, alerts, favorites, anything, it makes me happy to know people at least get some enjoyment from my work... whether they review or not.
I like getting reviews but when people just ask for updates it kind of annoys me. I hate getting cap-locked reviews. It might just be me and my issues but it makes me feel as if their yelling at me and I prefer normal tone.
I think what matters most is actually getting a review that caused your reader to talk about the subject or ramlbe about the story. There is this short story I wrote and it only got 13 reviews. I was far from satisfied up until I read them.
From a long review: "what makes a great story? is it the writing or the way characters are described, probably but i think mainly in my p.o.v. it's how the author expresses feelings, probably their own feelings or feelings that they have seen others go through, by using their, or others, characters. this fanfic shows a lot of feelings and i bet you worked really hard even if some chapters were shorter. i'm not a critic, but even if it is a fanfic you have a lot of talent on how to express feelings. keep writng and happy new years^_^ loved the story and it's kinda true in life their are no happy endings, but their are happy moments"
To something as small and simpl as this: "Wow. Wow! This is just so wonderful! You've structured it just right. And the general impression from the whole story is just life-asserting and mature. You've done a great job. I'm really impressed and moved. Thanks a lot."
It is frustrating when you got over so many hits/alerts/favs and no reviews but when you receive a review that is like 'wow I really read your story' it brings you a sense of pride and awe. Ya, know? 'People actually like my story' feeling.
I unfortunately have asked only for updates, but that's when I'm super sleepy. I regret EVER doing that.
I love getting reviews on my done story. Even flames~ They can be funny to read, and I'm sort of an odd ball.
Reviews are important; both to make your work better and to make you as a writer feel more confident. I absolutely detest flamers who bash solely for the purpose of being mean/rude (all my AN have something at the end about not flaming). On the other hand, constructive criticism is a good thing.
As a 'veteran' on fan-fiction dot net (5 yrs with an account, and longer without) here are some things I've found that help get more reviews on a story:
a) Have a summery, preferably a good one (it's what gets people to read the story, after all). Never say "I'm not good at writing summaries, so just read it" because the first thing most people will do when they read this is skip on over to the next one.
b) If you're wanting a lot of people to read it and you're not choosy about what you write about, choose a topic that's popular (like Naruto, DBZ, Sailor Moon, Harry Potter, etc) and/or choose pairings that are popular/controversial (you'd be surprised how many people want to read about nearly impossible pairings like Sakura/Itachi or Hermione/Tom Riddle).
c) If what the topic you wish to write on is rather unknown, a fresh look on things (such as a new pairing or plot idea) can give you a lead.
d) And finally, the thing that helps the most with getting reviews is to write well. Have a good storyline that draws people in, and have good grammar as well as good plot-devices to keep people reading.
As to review length and content, I, of course, feel that it's better to have relative meaning to the review (smiley faces just don't cut it) and constructive criticism or praise is always welcome.
Long, detailed reviews are nice, however, a mere "good job, keep it up. Update soon." is nice as well. It may not be as helpful as more detailed reviews, but it does show that people have at least read the story and like it. In response to a few of the posts I read, I don't think people usually write reviews in order to 'be nice' to a 'friend' (sure, there may be some, but it's not common) because usually even your friends won't take the time to write to you a 'nice' review about a story if they haven't read through it.
As to getting more hits than reviews, that's normal, many people are in too much of a rush to take the time to make a decent review. Other times some of the hits are people who've already read and reviewed the story, but are re-reading it and don't feel the need to write another review. Heck, there are even some people who don't understand how placing a review works (I don't know what they don't understand, but I know they exist).
Hmm...well, I may post something else later, but this should be more than enough for now.
~JUCHKO
I love getting reviews as much as the next person, but I've found myself getting excited for certain people to review. Why? Because those people actually READ my story and give real feedback besides, 'Love It! Update soon!' 40 fracking times.
>>45 Yeah, around my fandom there are authors who are better than others. When I get an email that says x person who is a good reviewer has reviewed, I am excited to read it.
I don't ask for updates, I just say "can't wait until the next chapter is posted", because I don't want to be pushy, I just want to be nice.
I love getting reviews, but i understand if people don't cuz i'm lazy sometimes too XD. I love giving and getting feedback, but i too would rather not get something like 'update soon!' multiple times in a row.
Sometimes, those make me want to say, "Hey, I have a life too, you know!"
I like getting reviews. I mean, I understand if you're tired and you don't want to think too hard about reviewing. I get that. But when that happens to me I always go back the next day and review their story, because it's nice and will probably prompt them to keep writing. I would appreciate the same.
I stumbled across this thread earlier, and on a whim I decided to figure out the rough review-to-hit ratios for each of my last seven fanfics. The lowest is currently at 30 hits to 1 review, the highest at 66 hits to 1 review.
When considering that I'm not an especially prolific poster and don't write popular stuff, those ratios make me feel kinda fuzzy. (And I know I haven't been drinking tonight...)
I had a story accidentally deleated, so i ended up losing about 20 reviews. So now, my 6 chapter story looks like i only have 3 reviews. It's a bummer. and i hate flames. It makes you feel like you're writing's not good enough
I prefer reviews.....I totally agree with MyDeadlyPremonition and PieLand....They help and it kinda boosts our FanWriting egos...lol....I enjoy it, but I hate flamers...They upset me so bad....I mean, they just tear us down, just to make them happy because they can't write anything due to lack of imagination...
I currently have 31,976 hits on all my stories, and only about 133 reviews, counting multiple reviews by the same person. This equates to around 1 review per 240 views. Now, this isn't to say that I do not like views, but at least give the common courtesy to say something. As a university student, I need to have work reviewed! Same applies to fiction work!
I love getting reviews I have been a writer for a while. When reading my storys you can see how I have progressed over the years. I know that my grammer is still bad but noone ever wants to betta for me to help me cath things. Anyway my newest story I have two reviewrsthat review for every chapter It makes me so warm and fuzzy I just wish I had more that two reviewers
My hits/reads are in the triple digits daily and my stories' reviews are only in the low double digits...T_T
I've learned to not fret over reviews too much, I get emails all the time of people favoriting or alerting my stories. So I take it as people like my story and see nothing wrong with it to critique it.^^;;; BUT I WOULD LOVE 4657897654 REVIEWS, PLEASE!!!!! XD
I like getting hits, but it really makes me happy when I have a review as well. Hits are nice and all, but one really good review can just make my day :) Know what I mean? Plus, reviews usually mean that they've actually taken the time to read the whole thing.
I'm just glad to see that someone reads my stories. That's all I can ask for, really xD I always make sure that I review now, especially now that I've submitted my own works. I haven't gotten one review yet, but I'm not too worried (I only submitted two stories so far anyways). Ah, I digress.
Reviews are my favorite. They can tell me if they liked it and want to keep reading it in one thing. I love when someone reviews because like a lot said, it means they read the whole chapters and are intrested in more. I always try to thank them, because it's a nice thing to do when someone takes the time to read your hard work, I think. I review a lot too.
I like hits.
Pretty much everyone I talk to (as in, actually know) never review. And, even though I know that hit counts are very inaccurate (people who accidentally click in, only read the first few lines, or read the story over and over are counted equally), I still care more about how many people actually read it, rather than the people who obsessively review, beg for updates, and poke or moan about pairings or character appearances.
Can you tell I'm a little apathetic towards reviewers...? :'D
I used to really enjoy and obsess over reviews. It got so bad that I would write a story just to see how many reveiws I would get. Thankfully, I got over that and just write what I want to write and when I want to write....Which hasn't been for almost a year, but I still love to read so that's fine with me.
what i like best is how popular some of the stories would get.
i have this junjo romatnica one "A STALKING HORROR" and in less than a month it got 50 reviews and over 7k hits. it might have been because i updated every four days, but they loved that i updated so often. i usually tyep seven chapters in a row and just copy an dpaste on ein every four days, that way i keep ahead of the readers!
sometimes it just urks me when you see so many hits yet very few reviews.
December Stats: For the month of 2010-12, there have been a total of 7,622 Hits and 1,375 Visitors to story: Italian Ice.
If I had that many reviews... :)
The story, in reality, has 296 reviews.
bothers me when i post up stories and no one reviews just reads
I use to obsses about getting reviews. That was what drove my determination to finish. However, over the months, that has disappeared and I just post chapters whenever I feel like so. Reviews aren't as "yayy" to me as it used to be b/c of the lack of imput most people give me.
They were filled with "Keep going!" "It was so good, update soon!" "I LOVED that part!" Like, c'mon?? Which part? I only like thoughtful reviews, the ones that make you keep going. And I just KNOW that almost all authors do. So whenever I read, I (try to) do my best and give a long, thoughtful reveiw. Critics are also nice reveiws. (:
What IS a hit? I get what a "view" is, it's kinda obvious, but a hit? Somebody explain, please.
I like getting long, well thought-out reviews more than anything. I have a humor one-shot that has 33 short "that was funny" reviews, but I'd trade them all for two serious reviews on my other stories. It's still nice to get them, period, tho. I had one fanfic up for at least a year before getting a single review, despite that fact that people kept reading it. I like to get feedback from my fellow writers so I can know how to improve.
A 'hit' is the same as a 'view' - not to be confused with a 'visitor'.
A visitor is a unique person who has viewed your page, they can refresh your page, or reopen it and it will increase your views, but not your visitors.
Reviews are really what makes writing fanfictions worthwhile for me - if it wasn't for people supporting me I probably would have given this up ages ago.
If you're not getting any reviews, try making friends with some other authors in your section. You can agree to review each-others chapters when they come out and they tend to be good at giving constructive criticism.
I hate it when I get a view but not a review. I don't even care if in the review you say you hate my story, just at least write something so I have a guess to how my story was viewed. Though don't get me wrong I don't support flammers. Just seriously take what five minutes out of your day and write at least one bloody review for the story you just read.
Ummmm, let's see....
For reviews to my stories I have....
87-Just Bleachy
63-A Different Naruto
0-NarutoTimetravelChange of DNA?
0-A Vow
11-Sawada Daiouji Tsunayoshi
2-How What Meow?
8-Humans, Nekos, Inugamis, Tanuki's, and Kitsunes?
22-Tsuna Has His Secrets Too
...I wish people would review....TT-TT
But at least the ones that do are usually good at criticizing...
I don't even pay attention to views. I don't do stuff for other people, I do it for myself so it just doesn't matter to me.
Let's see...
For the reviews I have totally for my stories: 210, then again, that's because I post fics most of the time or I have a longer time on FF.net, and these are out of 44 fics. :P
Anyway for each one is statistically its:
20 Lights and Nights (Same reason as 'To Court a Critic')- 5
40 Sentences of Uchiha ItachixKinomoto Sakura - 3
Another Dimension - 23
Artists - 4
Behind These Hazel Eyes - 8
Betrayal and Lust - 1
Dark and Light - 1
Detective Jordan (I admit, I lost the whole document containing the story, darn) - 3
Even if you don't have a heart, I'll still care - 4
Finally Home - 1
Hope - 7
Kaiba Has No Luck (Written by my younger sister) - 10
Kaitou Kid Convention - 5
Mirror - 5
My Wish - 1
Poem for Ash Ketchum and Namine, Namine POV - 3
Possible Love (This was just a running thought) - 14
Puppets - 3
Sayonara - 1
Songbird - 3
Stars - 2
Sympathize - 5
Take a Chance (I still have the document, which is good, except with the fact that I don't know what to write for the next chap) - 14
The Card Captors Meet Yu-Gi-Oh (I forgot I had this) - 5
The Date! - 3
Thiective (Ok, for this one, I'll have to find and figure out the next chap for this, sorry fans out there) - 49
Things That May Not Happen (Gave up that one a long time ago) - 6
To Court a Critic (One of of the ones I enjoyed writing, but somehow stopped since I'm busy with college and all) - 14
...I feel somehow dissatisfied and somehow satisfied that I've been read, favored, alerted, reviewed, and so on, my new fics may take some time to be reviewed, sadly...those that have zero reviews aren't included in this. Dissatisfied for only being read, and not reviewed, satisfied for those who did, favored, and alerted....seriously, would it be a crime to ask people to review the new ones or those that are never been reviewed before? I'm shutting up now cause I'm just ranting. :P
People who read but don't review do make me a little upset sometimes. I'll get a hit on something but no reviews, and it leaves me thinking, why didn't they review? Did they not like it? Why not? Its just a sad feeling. But, its the ones who add stories to their favorites or alert list and don't review that really make me mad. Why aren't you reviewing, if you supposedly like it so much?! Jeez...
Anyhoo, since everyone shared their stats I guess I will too ^^
A Country Girl's Pirate- 131 reviews
A Date- 26 reviews
Catch and Fall- 23 reviews
Demon's Ward- 8 reviews
Destroy My World- 26 reviews
From A Pirate's Viewpoint- 61 reviews
Reflections- 0 reviews
To The Hereafter- 4 reviews
Together- 1 review
Unplanned- 10 reviews
Whitewing- 36 reviews
Overall, I feel that I've done pretty good- hardly anyone knows what Phantom Wizard is so its no wonder I have so little reviews for my PW fics T.T...!
I have had about 800 hits and views for my stories and only 38 reviews over my three stories.
I may sound stupid but where the hell can you see how many hits you have O.o
as for reviews, It used to annoy the shit out of me when I do get faves but no reviews, but recently I care a little less. I've got some faithful reviewers, reviewing each fic the best they can and no ''Good, liked it'' or whatever. So those mean a lot more to me than 20 ''loved it'' reviews:P
Hmmm looks up stats for story My main project (The definition of weakness) Hits: 1256 Reviews: 27. That's 2.1 % of people reviewing. Really depressing.
I almost always review: good, lengthy ones too. With bits like 'this character was dead on, but your plot needs work' and the like. But oddly, it seems a lot of people don't LIKE getting these. I've gotten snippy responses to these reviews. Makes me sad :(
Oh, and Susu, if your on ff.net than you can click on story stats (under traffic) and there will be a column for how many hits you have. If you're on ff.
My main story (it's been going for awhile now) has... over 60k hits and 567 reviews. I have no right to complain, but it is a little irking that, besides hits, I have over 500 people SUBSCRIBED to the fic, and get around 30 reviews per chapter. Most of which say "Good chapter, update soon". The percentage always ends up being >5%, which seems to be the norm with most fics. A lot of people just don't bother reviewing. The clicking and the typing of at least a sentence... "Nah, too hard!" Honestly...
My pride and joy, my South Park series as eternal-lie, has had 10 reviews in the past 2 months of posting:
4 for Death and Drama
4 for Drama never Dies
2 for The Fall of Coon (and one of those was my sister hacking my third account to make me feel better and prove she really was reading it)
And according to FF.net I have had 823 visitors to those four stories, plus another one one I've posted on that account.
I've come to the conclusion South Park Fans are not a chatty bunch.
My Zelda story has more faves than reviews, which I find plain frustrating. I used to get over 400 hits when I updated (not sure how that measures up to others in the Zelda category), and get one or two reviews per chapter.
I wish more people reviewed. I think a lot of readers don't realize just how much it means to writers.
I prefer reviews because they tell me what I'm doing correctly and what isn't working. Unfortunately, it's hard to get very detailed reviews sometimes. :(
A friend of mine told me that just because people don't review doesn't mean they don't read.
It really ticked me off until I checked out my profile page. One story received over 144,000 hits while I got less than 1000 reviews for it. Did it matter any more? Not a chance, because if that many people are willing to read it.... I'm perfectly fine if they don't review.
Although, realisticly reviews are more than welcome and I do reply to every one I get. I also review every story I read whether or not it makes it to my fav list because I do know how it feels.
Getting hits is all well and good, but it always feels so much better in my eyes to get a comment back. It kind of annoys me when a ton of people look at something I made but say nothing. I don't expect every single person to comment. (If they did, I'd get over 1000 for some of my works) But one every now and then is always nice.
I have too admit, I usually don't review a story unless I really love it! I always try and think of my reviews and make them mor ethen a simple "please update" (which I also dislike). I have offered my soul, given cyber cookies, proposed, and given them virtually FF cash.....sometimes those dont work well, but i always keep trying!! My current story "Guardians of Time" (check it out!) Has over 200 reviews and over 1,000 people on my story alert :D
From the 58 stories I currently have posted I have a total of 103 reviews and a grand total of 22,324 hits. It doesn't bother me that i have so few reviews to the ratio of hits since I have 152 favorites. Plus I know when I'm reading a story that I'm really intreaged in I just continue to read till I reach the end. I'm sure many others do that too so they only do one review instead of one every chapter plus when you're really in the story you tend to forget about review.
Yo. I'm Zombie Boy.
I've been on FF.net since February of '04, and I currently have nine stories covering the Ranma 1/2, Kim Possible, Calvin & Hobbes, Fallout, and Family Guy fandoms.
current stories I'm working on:
First Steps: My Ranma epic, currently waiting an update when my muse for that one gets back from her retreat at the sanitarium.
Basic premise of the story: Ranma and Akane grow up. Things proceed to get weird.
Bad Moon Rising: A rongo story, based off of Doppler Effect. Drakken gets lycanthropy and infects Ron and Shego, then he clones Kim and starts causing trouble.
Echoes of Eras Past: The Courier, a woman named Molly who is not as she seems, and Boone partner up to complete their missions of vengeance and in the process change the wasteland.
I'll get a ridiculous amount of hits to a story - then only get like five reviews for every 100-1,000 hits...- but I get alot of favorites I guess, so that kinda makes me feel better about it.
what really pisses me off is this one chick - all she can say is "luv it, update soon, 'kay?"
I want to rip my hair out when i see her reviews
Ah yes those reviews are annoying, I appreciate it, but still.
I like hits, Some fics of mine get quite a lot, but I must admit I am quite the review junkie. It's like I won't update if I don't get X reviews, but I do lose my motivation when I barely get them.
