I have heard that about 60% (or higher percentage) of fanfiction readers and writers are girls... is that true? Well, right now, I highly think so. So, let's count to see how many of us here are boys or girls.
I'm a girl. Clues in the name :)
I'm female...sadly lol.
I'm a guy. We should keep this as one post per person.

Last time I checked Felton0Fanatic was a girl.
Oh and I'm also a girl.

Female. And you currently have an exact 80%, from those posted.
And that 80% is raised by my two lovely XX chromosomes!
Hmm, seems that there are more fangirls than boys...OH YEAH!
Male. One of the few, it appears.

Try and top that xD;
female :)
I'm a girl. I bet tere are more femal anfiction writers because most fanficton is romance, and as a general rule that appeals to girls more.
Male. edgeygavin: Actually, I love romance fics. Probably 'cause I am hopelessly romantic anyway, but hey ho... life goes on.
female :D
Can I just say, I think writing appeals to girls more but boys should get more involved. I agree with edgeygavin but there is a lot of fanfic and such that isn't romance, quite a lot is violence and that's more a man thing, no offence to anybody, it just is.
Feeeeemaaaale o 3o
I prefer violence to romance, and rock music to RnB... but I guess I'm just a tomboy... my current fic is a romance fic thanks to girly friends threatening me with makeup. Dx
Female. the last time I checked...lol
I'm kinda a tomboy and I like violence but I also could go with a romance. I write romance fan-fics, but I start to describe the violent parts of the story more than the rest of it. I am this way thanks to my family of four older brothers and my tomboy best friend. I understand what edgeygavin is saying, but you're being a little sexist. I know a few guys who are into romance and a lot of girls are into horror and violence than romance. They say it's too boring and soppy...
I think that girls can express themselves far more than guys, and they are more open to judgement. I bet a lot of guys actually do write fanfics, but they just don't seem to want others to see them. That's my guess, anyway. If any guys out there want to prove me wrong, go ahead!
female
GIRLLLLLLLLLLYYYYYYYYYY!
Yeh, I'm a girl and I know what you mean - my friends who are girls like reading and writing way more than my friends that are boys "/
im a girl personally. i dont know many boys that like reading as much as me and my friends, but that could be because of our nature. we love to read and play board games. we also love pretending the other is a horse, and playing imaginative games like that. maybe were just weird
I'm female. It's weird: I was just wondering the other day about how many fanfiction writers are girls. I assumed it must be most of us. In fact I don't think I've ever read a fanfic by a boy. This doesn't mean that I don't think boys should write fanfics too, though. It would be awesome if loads more guys wrote.
Glad to be here, btw
hi. i was also reffered here to by yoshino in the moonlight. belive it or not I'm actualy a boy who writes fanfics but mainly to escape my hectic if not somewhat deppressing life but also because I like to write them. actualy I mainly write romance fanfics which probably seems unusual but hey I never did fit in. so far I'm still working on a sonic x fanfic mainly involving Tails and Cosmo
I'm a girl. (:
I think girls are more willing to express things through writing whereas guys just... Don't tend to bother, which also results in there being more female fanfiction writers.
I'm a girl. Stupidly clumsy and obsessed with Sonny with a Chance. I've commented on most of these thingys because i'm bored. and performing arts evaluations are boringggg.:]
Girl.
Male, I just like coming up with ideas and writing them down, typically action/adventure stories. Although, I've done comedy and an occasional romance fic.
Boy.
Female, and obsessed with fanfiction!
Female and proud of it =}
I'm Female
Girl :)
Also, I use smilies far too much, so that should be a dead giveaway to my gender :)
Another female here, i really enjoy writing so i naturally settled on fanfiction XD
im a girl:D
who is also obsessed with fanfiction!
I think most fan-fiction writes are girls/women. I just cant see most boys writing.
Another reason for girls ~ I'm a girl and I have gotten my girl friends into fanfiction, but non of the boys want to try.
私は女です。
>>77 I like you :)
>>78 You might like me less if you knew I like a Michiru/Someone who's not Haruka fic ;)
漢字 は むずかしい ですね?
>>79 as long as Michiru's partner is a woman and not a man, NOR Seiya I have no problem with it :P
But I have seen really few fic with michiru being with another!
as for kanji, I'm still in the beginning, the difficult part is to remember the onyomi and kunyomi.
>>80 Seahorse by Vahn: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5876464/1/
It's a boy (if one who turns into a girl later), though it does show her liking girls and being attracted to Haruka. I think it's done quite well and I usually can't see her being with a man.
I'm taking lessons, but it's mostly covering grammar. I'm picking kanji up as I go and I'll study more if I get to work there for a while.
>>81 What I can't stand in most fics about Michiru, is pairing her with a man.
I mean damn she is an open Lesbian, not bi not bi-curious or whatever and surely not straight who turned bi for Haruka's sake.
I'll try the story[since the "boy" turns out to be a girl]
as to Japanese, I'm attending classes since October, we also do mostly grammar, but also we do kanji, we are up to 100+ at the moment, and until the end of the semester Will be up too 300 or so :)
I'm a girl. And how is everyone?
I'm a girl. Hi y'all. :D
>>82 I think you might have misunderstood what I meant, but I'll see what you think. ;) It's a Ranma crossover, if you're familiar with it.
It is looking like more girls than boys, but I wonder if a poll could be easily put up somewhere to get an actual count.
>>85 I am not familiar with Ranma, but also the author doesn't seem all that familiar with Michiru either. as far as I have read, she seems completely out of character, and hmm way too many homophobes for a japanese media, the more media I watch the more certain I am getting that they do not act homophobic on gays, surprised yes, but I haven't seen any extreme reaction, from anime/manga to drama and live tv shows, anyway I'll read further to see what the author is up and I'll let you know.
as for here yap girls are more than boys, it is also a fact in fanfic stats that the great load of writers/readers are also girls.
>>85
I wish i hadn't read that story...
I don't even know why the author used Michiru or Haruka...
they seems WAY out of character, and they messed Michiru's birthday which is on March and not September...
I won't even going to comment of the homosexual parts...T_T
>>86 >>87 As a quick explanation of the Ranma 1/2 concept, most of the main characters are martial artists who have fallen into a spring at Jusenkyo. Ranma, the title character, turns into a female when hit with cold water and also has quite a few women problems - mostly due to his father making multiple arranged marriages and not telling him.
As far as homophobes in Japanese media go, media and real life rarely match up. Media here rarely portrays homosexual people (and when they do it's often comedic or portrayed well) or homophobes, but there are still quite a few people assaulted or even killed because of it. I've never seen the fact that there need to be women's only carriages in media either.
I can put up with the difference, because I'm mostly familiar with Michiru in the anime (or the SNES RPG), who isn't given much screen time and therefore not much depth. That and it's said life has gone a different way and we mostly see Michiru as older, with Haruka and after becoming Sailor Neptune. I'm willing to give a lot of points for any story that at least attempts to give an explanation for having a homosexual relationship with heterosexual characters (or in this case the opposite) or ones which builds a relationship, rather than suddenly being together and extremely close.
>>88
I wikipedia-ed ranma and read about the character to understand a bit what is going on.
also I have no knowledge on how Japanese react in homosexuality in real life, as I said what I observe from the MEDIA is not homophobic to the slightest [only media not real life, I have never been in Japan and the only Japanese I know is my teacher]
as for Michiru, from the anime alone is obvious where she is staying as a Character. since I am an H&M writer, and I have searched on the characters from every aspect, watched/read ALL available official media/interviews of sailor moon and especially about the two Characters I write. There are a lot of things in that story that make her act out of character. and I am not talking about her sexuality.
also what bugged me the most was the fact that Michiru wanted to jump all females around her. or the fact that she couldn't control her hormones while with that other "lesbian" and almost cheated on her partner. That's not Michiru...
Anyway you said: "Media here rarely portrays homosexual people..." are you leaving in Japan? if not what country do you mean?
Ah, I thought you meant that you thought Japanese characters wouldn't act like that, since you'd not seen it in media. I think that it's interesting to have more real-life situations sometimes though, which you wouldn't see in media because it's not done, or not suitable. That might be one reason I like Awkward Consequences (another Ranma/Sailor Moon cross, only Ranma/Hotaru ship, Haruka/Michiru is background). It's completely out of character, but deals with something that happens pretty often.
I'm living in the U.K. which I meant as a contrast - homophobes are rarely portrayed in media here too, but there are a lot of them. The only homosexual related things seen in the media by me at least are usually celebrities, occasionally people in soaps (who usually have a small bit - like a single story showing them come out and then you never see them again) or often comedy characters like the stereotypical homosexual man in 'Are You Being Served?' I'll admit I haven't watched much T.V. in the past few years though and I heard there was a campaign to include more positive views on TV, which might have been successful. There are a few exceptions I've seen, like Ellen (which is American, but shown here) and I've heard Torchwood does but I've not seen it. Actually I looked up 'homosexual' in conjunction with 'British' and 'media' and all I found was Torchwood.
The out of character mostly I could ignore, since I've only seen the anime and I thought Ranma was done okay (brash, insulting, using force for everything, somewhat innocent, no social skills and a good person). That and she was both younger and most likely not as confident at that point. The wanting to jump all the surrounding females did bother me too though, so I was glad when it stopped.
This has gotta too long, so I'm off to do my coursework now. >.<
Well the Characters seemed more American's than Japanese, from the way they were talking and acting.
when I said media I meant Japanese media only. such as anime/manga, J-drama's and TV shows.
an example of how they react to homosexual affection [which is never showed, as heterosexual affection is not showed either, mean kisses and such]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xzpx5RoZ78g
at the beginning the girl goes crazy when the other girl wings at her. and near the end of the vid[at 8:29], we see Kaho Anna showing her ring finger and says how Ouki Kaname-chan[the use of "chan" can mean closeness of any kind] gave her the ring. and then Ouki Kaname explains that they had played the roles of a husband and wife in a play and she felt that it was natural to give her a ring. they asked her how she did it, and she said that she herself put the ring on the finger. The crazed fan from the beginning, says how "it would be strange if they HAD NOT fall in love" and the others reaction at the news was pure surprise. and they were more surprised that the other girls knew :P
western cultures are clearly different from Asian cultures.
I have no knowledge on Ranma so I can't judge but I do have quite the knowledge on Sailor Moon. She was also 14 when she was shown at the episode from Haruka's past. she was quite confident when she hit on Haruka straight ahead. as for Haruka she was also OOC, way too childish, and needy! Haruka originally is a very shy and strict person, also very emotional, with a cool persona as her facade. actually you can see Haruka in every girl [with short hair] in that vid I posted earlier, since the creator of Sailor Moon, had those actresses in mind when she was thinking of Haruka.
Girl, obviously (princess).
No, no I´m a guy, hence my name... Are there actually any boys here?
>>94 Well, there's Iacalus. And...um... yeah, I think that's it.
Uh ... yer girl here too! So ... it's all girls and one guy?
Hmmm, I can only think of four authors I've ever encountered who said they were boys...and two of them were gay, and one of them was an adult who flamed my sister. This is just another symptom of men being afraid to do anything these days. Where are the male singers, I ask you? The male authors and poets? Come on, guys, embrace the beauty of fanfiction! Creativity isn't only for girls and homosexuals!
I'm a guy. I've met some really talented male writers. We need more action/adventure stories on the site. Romance and drama are fine, but nothing beats epic adventures.
Im a girl and I write alot of fiction. Like Twilight, Doctor Who, Primeval, Torchwood and Night World, Vampire Diaries.
I either do mostly one-shots are rather long ones, and my two female friends write too. I know of a few people (also female) who write, and my english teacher knows I write (which helps with my english writing original, that im getting A in because of all the things you have to consider writing fic).
Its fun and creative, i dont know why people dont do more of it. You can express your fandom, each one is like a little story add on!
Girl :)
Girl
Girl~ ^^
Male- so tvtropes is right. (yes, I survived tvtropes)
Female
Girl ^///^
I'm a girl too ^^
Female.
Girl here, but I bet there are alot of readers that are guys, they'll just never admit it
Guy. One of the few who will actually admit he likes romance, and who has a very obvious weakness for cute things, especially cats.
Guy. Did anyone count the ratio girls/guys so far? I think we're definitely outnumbered >_<
BTW, if anyone says girl, it could be meaning Guy In Real Life (also spelled GIRL).. Just a thought.
I think on a fanwork site like this the girls are actually girls, as opposed to the rest of the internet where girls are guys and guys are also guys:P
FEMALE AND LOVING IT!!!!:-D
Greetz: Wraith Fan -xXx-
girl
Girl. Obviously. From my name.
I'm a girl. Yup.
I am a girl.
I'm a girl! ^?^
Girl.
I'm all woman over here! :)
I am a girl too...
Definently a female ^^
Girl.
So far, this is pretty much proving your point.
I'm a chick, chica, girl, woman, lady, however you want to say it I'm female. Really, do you know any guys called 'Crystal'?
Um, I'm a guy.
I'm male, yet my finely tuned senses are telling me that perhaps I am not in the majority here.
Female, though I used to get mistaken for male when I was in elementary school from time to time.
I'm female, always thought to have been one.
But I have been told I'm a gay guy trapped in a girl's body.
I find I must agree with that. xD
Guy here. Yeah, so far looks like your point's being proven. XDD
Female :3
Guy, although people keep calling me a girl on ff.net. How many guys and girls does that make now?
I'm 100% girl here, last i checked! XD But i do write yaoi. Actually, 80% of the fanfic girl population is a yaoi reader/writer. Nifty, eh?
Girl... out of all the fanfic writers I know, only a select few are guys.
Um...ummm...waaaaiiitttt Gu--No! Girl. Yeah, I'm a girl. XD
I'm a girl... as far as you know =b
Another girl here, one who also writes yaoi ;D
Hm...
-Bra? [x]
-Long Hair? [x]
-Earrings on both ears? [x]
-High-ish voice? [x]
Yupperkinz. I'm a girl
Girlies here.
Isn't that strange? Most WRITERS are girls. But most AUTHORS are guys....
Strange.
Girl for sure. Hey Anonymous you never said which one you were.
I got boobs, and I don't got anything hanging between my legs, so that's girl from what they told me at school.
Only 60%? I'd think it was more than that, I mean, most of the fanfiction writers and readers I've met are girls, but it might be because I hang around the yaoi sections so much... That might have something to do with it...
>>140 Interestingly enough, none of those actually identify you as a girl.
Boy.
I'm a girl, but the majority of people I'm in contact with are guys. I can seriously only name about four girls on there. But then I'm a big ShikaTema/Naruto freak, and the guys are the best authors on that end.
But yeah. I'm girl ^^
I'm a girl. But, since I'm 24, I'm gonna go ahead and call myself a woman.
I am a male. Also, without looking at the prior posts, I'm going to assume that there are more females than males here. Primarily because Most Fanfic Writers Are Girls.
Hi, I just got sent here by the creator of the site on FF. I'll formally introduce myself on the threads above...
Anyway, I'm a girl, and I've only encountered three male writers on Fanfiction, and one male artist.
I would like to say that I am most definitely a girl. :I
I'm not entirely sure how many male artists/writers I've met, I never really bother to check, however I have found one male who dabbles in both. :) Most of the others are females.
Kind of makes me sad how girls are the majority. :/
I'm positive I'm a girl. A majority of the people who read my stories, or I talk to are girls. So I agree. More girls than guys write and draw.
I am female! Though for some reason people tend to think I'm a guy...
Ooh! Ooh! I'm a girl! -bounces up and down with hand raised like an idiot-
>>155 Paper-kun! Oh no! I'm stalking you, arn't I... Meh, I don't care... still... Hiiiiii~~!
double X here! XX, meaning I'm a female! Unless science lies.
one more guy to the list lol
I'm a girl, thanks, and I only know one guy writer/artist, but one who is only an artist. So...just two... and most of my friends on FF and dA are girls so...sorry guys!
I'm a guy~~~
girl
Guy
Akito, it's not polite to cyber stalk your sister.
I'm a girl and I think I agree with that statistic. I always assume the stories I read are written by females, and when I find out they aren't, it usually comes as a surprise.
I'm a girl. Yea I think that most of the stories that I read so far are for females.
Another female.
I'm a girl, but I'm a tomboy.
Girl. I'm pretty surprised that there are even boy fanfiction writers. Not to say that you boys aren't up to it; I just only see girls. Plus, when most of the Author's Comments contain things like "*drools over insertcharacterhere" or "SQUEEEEEEE" I tend to think that it's mostly chicks.(:
Girl. I usually think of a girl when i read fanfics too. Once i found out it was a guy and i was like O.o
Girls tend to be more emotional, so we can express ourselves more. I think it would be great though if more guys wrote fanfics.
DUDE....I'm a dude FanFiction writer....I never thought I would get into it, but now I have wrote like 14 stories! It's very addictive....Though, I don't think that the stories are written by mostly girls....Some dudes just like writing....
Girl here, and I actually do think that almost all fanfiction writers are girls. I mean, every author I've read says on their profile, and I've only come across two guy authors, but their work was really good, so...I think it IS just that girls that write and actually post things.
When I see something like 'squee' or a rant describing the hotness of a character, I think of girls immediately.
Boy with the name Amber....I lie. xD
Girl who is a tomby and girly girl. I think almost all my friends on fanfic are girls and mostly all of my fav authors are girls so I agree there's mostly girl authors I think I've only seen one or two guy authors
I'm a guy, with at least 18 fanfics under his belt (And the number is slowly going up).
Girl, which seems to be a pattern here.
Girl... Strange. The most popular fanfictions are for shounen manga. Maybe girls daydream more?
Hmm, I think there has always been a slightly higher percentage of female/male ratio fan-fic writers, but I would preface that with more recently as opposed to a decade and a half ago. I think then, when many of the fan-fiction topics were niche subjects, most of the writers were male college students. Or at least those with the disposable income to purchase the VHS tapes by which they were inspired, in anime fandom at any rate.
Girl. 'Nuff said. :)
Guy. I write a lot, but I'm rather new to the fanfiction scene. Well, new to the writing part. I've been reading them for years.
girl
Girl.
Hm. That's an interesting fact.
Guy
girl
Woman.

I'm a "Young Lady." Interesting that you bring this subject up b/c I only know two male authors on fanfiction . net. Interesting, I've noticed that most of the readers and writers were female too.

Girl. But most of DLP (Dark Lord Potter- a forum I occasionally lurk) is guys, so that kind of disproves the 80% theory. I think that the majority of slash writers are girls, and the majority of ship writers are girls (so romance and stuff) but then the genuinely 'dark' writers -in HP- and adventure writers are probably guys, or 50% guys/girls. But I'd say 60% is probably right.
LISTEN UP. I have got the valid stats of this thread here.....
20.36% male (34)
80.64% female (133).
So atleast in fanbbs, 80% are female.
Of the 194 posts above I have excluded 27 posts which were just posts by the same person or comments where I didn't get to know if the poster is a girl or a guy. Also one of the posts excluded was by someone who was a transexual (>>49 no offense but i don't know where to put you) whom i couldn't categorise.
And for reference, i am male, as i stated in an earlier.
