Nominations for the biggest Mary Sues (80)

1 Name: Lupa Dracolis : 2009-12-17 13:30 ID:e10P4yos

Basically, if you find a fanfic with a Mary Sue in, post it on here and after every few, read through them (or just the first page, paragraph, whatever) and vote on the biggest Mary Sue. My first nomination is the OC in this Twilight fanfic.

I read the first 4 chapter .........It was painful I must admit...I had to stop after that!

3 Name: Marth : 2009-12-17 18:29 ID:V7MRpL3T

Oh, God, you guys. Oh, God.

Also, I'm going to preemptively say that MI counts as trollfic for the purpose of this discussion.

One word: Sonichu.

I'd link it, but getting charged for a wave of spontaneous suicides across the Internet is not something I wish to repeat.

5 Name: Iaculus : 2009-12-17 18:41 ID:VMEbcqgG

@Marth: When reading that, I immediately interpreted 'FSM' as 'Flying Spaghetti Monster'. Put the story in a whole new light, I must say.

6 Name: Lupa Dracolis : 2009-12-18 10:51 ID:KYvANuxQ

What does FSM stand for?

7 Name: Iaculus : 2009-12-18 12:08 ID:X4COfkpa

Female Seeking Male? Friday-Saturday Meltdown? Forgetting Sarah Marshall? Federated States of Micronesia? The possibilities are endless...

8 Name: Marth : 2009-12-18 17:11 ID:V7MRpL3T

It's so much worse than you could ever imagine, guys.

FMS stands for "Frollo's Secret Mistress." Excuse me while I go throw up my entire digestive system.

9 Name: Iaculus : 2009-12-18 18:32 ID:X4COfkpa

... I prefer my suggestion. Let's go with that.

10 Name: ... : 2009-12-18 19:18 ID:a/CYs+lQ

I nominate Bella Swan.

11 Name: InAgreement : 2009-12-18 19:51 ID:XZThJ2t2

Here, here, I second that nomination!

12 Name: Lupa Dracolis : 2009-12-19 13:05 ID:KYvANuxQ

I thought a Mary Sue was meant to be perfect? Miss Fall-over-everything-including-air doesn't sound all that perfect to me.

13 Name: Iaculus : 2009-12-19 13:25 ID:5QMSe/17

Lady's a classic Anti Sue.

Observe:

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AntiSue

14 Name: ... : 2009-12-19 13:59 ID:a/CYs+lQ

A Mary Sue is a shallow character which the author wishes they could be. They are typically perfect, or have an entire cast of other characters falling in love with them for no discernable reason. Bella Swan is an insert-yourself-here character who falls into the second category.

15 Name: Marth : 2009-12-19 17:17 ID:V7MRpL3T

Exactly. Part of being a Mary-Sue is having ridiculous traits that don't belong in the fandom either concretely (Discworld elves, for instance, are not Tolkien elves, so putting a Tolkien elf in a DW story would be hella Sueish) or tonally (my main fandom is a fluffy, ridiculous magical girl show, so all the OCs with wangsty, tragic backstories are Sueish because that's not how the show rolls).

But the other part of it is that Mary Sues are black holes, distorting characters and altering the gravitational field of the plot until everything revolves around them, either because of what special snowflakes they are or for no reason at all. Bella may not have multicolored eyes or a bathetic backstory, but because all the attention of the story is focused on her--and it's not just her supernatural boytoys; all the kids at her school adore her despite the fact that she's kind of a bitch to them--she still qualifies as quite a Sue.

However, the phrase (and if horrifically bad "sexy" talk makes you want to claw your eyes out, I suggest you skip the rest of this post): "You are -- Oh -- like dynamite. Oooh! Explode with me, my succulent blackberry-woman," has never been used to describe Bella, to my knowledge, so I stand by my choice. XD

16 Name: Lupa Dracolis : 2009-12-20 02:51 ID:qQknhV7d

I also nominate Zoey Redbird from the House of Night books.

17 Name: Iaculus : 2009-12-20 06:37 ID:5QMSe/17

Flying Spaghetti Monsters and exploding blackberries? Ye gods, someone was hungry when they wrote that.

18 Name: Llama-Chan : 2009-12-21 12:57 ID:TUioBs3i

I want to nominate two... Is that okay? If it isn't, choose the first one I put...

1) ENOBY Dementia Raven Way or whatever her name is from My Immortal.

2) Bella Swan. We all know it!!

19 Name: Lupa Dracolis : 2009-12-21 12:58 ID:QayBC6r2

Bella Swan's already been nominated.

20 Name: Marth : 2009-12-21 13:21 ID:V7MRpL3T

And I preemptively declared MI a trollfic (as far as this discussion's concerned) in post 3. Please read the thread before adding new nominations.

21 Name: KyuubiNineTailedFox : 2009-12-22 03:14 ID:JnU56DvK

Well my character Sora was a Mary-Sue; and I remember one very horrible review telling me that. But thats allllll changed now. Thank goodness I got some help! :D

22 Name: ... : 2009-12-22 07:13 ID:a/CYs+lQ

Bella doesn't have a tragic backstory because she has NO backstory, past friends, interests etc. Basically, she exists from the point at which it was convenient to start the story, which unfortunately happened to be in her late teens. She is something nobody thought possible: a Sue less developed than any fanfic Sue you care to mention.

24 Name: Lupa Dracolis : 2010-06-11 10:34 ID:iqfRceL7

Oh, my eyes. Why did I click on the link?

I find the fact that she believes running like an "anti-lope" is graceful rather amusing. For one thing, it's antelope. For another, I'd like to see a humanoid (because clearly as this is a Mary-Sue she won't be boring and human) run like an antelope.

25 Name: ... : 2010-06-11 11:02 ID:2835bYkh

Blatant trollfic. It's not even trying.

26 Name: RayRay : 2010-06-11 12:08 ID:H46L4F//

Funnily enough, reading it, I'm reminded of actual Twilight, combined with "My Immortal" If it's a trollfic, it's hilarious. If it's not. I feel sorry for that poor delusioned girl.

27 Name: Fee : 2010-06-11 12:56 ID:P6gpf94g

Every character in the Vampire Beach series. The books are that bad, I can't even GIVE them away...

28 Name: BlackMage16 : 2010-06-11 14:13 ID:bb45hRTS

...I don't know what to say. Only read the first chapter and I'm in shock. It's got to be a trollfic otherwise this person has some serious issues.

29 Name: ... : 2010-06-11 14:43 ID:2835bYkh

It's a carbon copy of My Immortal. Of course it's a trollfic (and an unoriginal one, at that).

30 Name: KatonRyu : 2010-06-15 14:54 ID:klV+/v5c

My character Ryu is one. I'm currently writing a fic from his perspective, to see if a basically omnipotent character can be in an even slightly interesting story. I'm calling it 'the Mary Sue Experiment' since I can't be arsed to find a better way to mark it. I'll post the link once it's up, but that might take a while yet.

31 Name: moonphase : 2010-06-30 11:40 ID:0EVDFyyF

I think Sookie from the Sookie Stackhouse series is a Sue (less so on the show.) She's very pretty and cute, every guy falls in love with her (even the non-supes,) she's extremely good ad kind and generous, fantastic at sex yet portrayed as quite chaste and virginial, has special powers, is important but doesn't realise it. I can't think of any real flaws.

However she does have problems (SPOILERS her bf does cheat on her and she is almost constantly broke.)

32 Name: Becca : 2010-07-23 07:12 ID:8EtoyL28

My nomination for Mary sue or Garry Stu is Daniel X from James Patterson's Daniel X series

He has he power to create real objects—people, food, anything— with only his mind they aren't just projections they are actual real objects. He also has super-speed (he outran a 100-mile-an-hour truck), super-strength (he can flip a car in a somersault if the need comes) and a photographic memory.

33 Name: Marth : 2010-07-23 08:12 ID:V7MRpL3T

>>32 Having never read the series, I obviously can't say for sure one way or the other, but powers alone aren't enough to make someone a Sue. What's he like on a personal level? How do the other characters react to him? In my opinion, at least, that third one is the most important for determining Sueishness.

Take Bella, for instance: She's not interesting, she's not fun to be around, and she's frankly a bitch to her classmates. And yet everyone loves her--not just Edward and Jacob, but all the normals in her school too. To me, that's hardcore Sueism, not her stupid mind-shield thing or how perfect she is as a newborn vampire.

34 Name: Iaculus : 2010-07-23 14:49 ID:5QMSe/17

Also, that doesn't tell us how powerful he is relative to his setting. I mean, if game-breaking powers like those are S.O.P. for a sufficient number of people, dude's gonna get challenged.

35 Name: Becca : 2010-07-23 15:32 ID:8EtoyL28

>>33 If you can just imagine up your friends you're not going to make them hate you? I have only read the first one and part of the second one, normally I read a full book but had to put this one down when Daniel was riding his motor bike thing along the road listening to his 'in his mind iPod' and listing his many cool super powers, and then explaining how perfect his four 'mind friends' are and how they are all amazing at motor bike tricks.

In the first book he meets a girl at school, he walks her home, reads her mind and she is thinking 'Daniel is gorgeous maybe he would ask me out sometime?' And this is the first real human his own age he has ever properly spoken to, the only problem with this is he also has feelings for one of his perfect mind friends who just happens to be the ‘girl of his dreams’ and also has feelings for Daniel.
A review of the audio book said this; ‘his talented reading can't save this work from its substandard prose, flat characters, absurd plot twists, and holes large enough to fly an alien battle cruiser through’

36 Name: ... : 2010-07-23 16:35 ID:2835bYkh

James Patterson is renowned for his ability to create plot holes in the unlikeliest places. Tbf, he's good at keeping young readers on the edge of their seats. If he could combine this talent with the ability to create a coherent, cohesive plot, he'd be a force to be reckoned with.

Unfortunately, however...

37 Name: Anonymous : 2010-07-24 07:13 ID:Ps8Q0CMb

I'd also have to nominate another James Patterson character. Maximum Ride from Maximum Ride.

38 Name: Iaculus : 2010-07-24 07:26 ID:5QMSe/17

>>35 Ah, now we're entering appropriately Sueish territory. When half the book's dedicated to explaining how awesome someone is... yeah.

>>37 I presume other protagonists include No Through Road and Seatbelts At All Times?

39 Name: Anonymous : 2010-07-24 07:33 ID:Ps8Q0CMb

Along with Crap! The Cops Are Catching Up.

The name also annoys me. Maximum...Ride? Who would name themselves Maximum? Or Fang? Angel I remember as being a little girl. Fang. Maximum Ride. Nudge.

40 Name: Fnick's Witness : 2010-07-24 11:21 ID:lZmii3uH

Ebony from the epic fail fic 'My Immortal.' And there was this one fic where the main character was such a Sue. Even the title of the fic was horridle! 'The Weak, Smart, and Rich Bird Kid.' Oi, how I managed to get past the fact she loves Justin Bieber...

God, I hate Maximum Ride so much! Every time I think about her I want to scream, and I have imagine her flying into a building to calm down. And she spends half of the book going on about how amazing she is, and the other half showing how 'cool' she is because she ignores authority and does whatever the hell she wants. And she has a traumatic past. She's a definite mary sue. You couldn't make her more sue-ish.

And Angel too. Every five minutes she gets another bloody power: "Look at me, I'm amazing at fighting! I can read minds! Now I can control people's minds! I can talk to animals! I can breathe underwater!" And everyone seems to find her cute, or funny. I want to strangle her! Angel also has a terrible past, and is as bad as Max.

I think the biggest Marry Sue would have to be Maximum Ride like Chelera said. She says she is amazing and has no faults and that she is so amazing. She also is like way to obsessed with Fang, which makes the series suck even more.

I nominate Anna the female lead in this fanfic,

www.fanfiction.net/s/5569075/1/Youre_My_Heart_But_Im_Your_Weapon

The author has basically made her able to do everything and she is 19! No 19 year old can be a perfect shot with a bow and arrow, gun and knife. Also perefect at martial arts and is second in comand in Torchwood (totally unbeilevable) and Jack is OOC in this too.

Mara Bell from Exodus by Julie Bertagna!
In a setting where people are plagued by disaster, she's a spirited leader, and the only one who cares about the world's problems. She ends up "leading her people" to Greenland. Oh, and there's some sort of prophecy about her, too. She's also flawless, having an infallible personality and making a big deal about her social values.

58 Name: NoOneNeedsToKnow : 2010-12-08 20:17 ID:U9vFm746

I agree about Bella Swan. She annoyed the hell out of me.

59 Name: Vaneskera : 2010-12-26 07:51 ID:xny1IJGR

Maxiumum Ride is a pretty good series (first three at least) but the characters are a fail. This year, if you averaged it, James Patterson released a book every forty-one days. You need time to write novels, you don't write them in ten days!

Zoey Redbird from House of Night, another okay series with fail characters.

In my opinion, one of the worst sins in fanfiction is a main character OC because I end up hating most OC's. They just don't... Click with the main characters, you know? Its like trying to press two north sides of a magnet together.

But maybe I just think about this stuff to hard.

60 Name: Bitch Goddess : 2010-12-26 17:06 ID:4+uvbCml

Luckily, this person has never posted on ff.net, but she has written fics for every fandom from Dr. Who to Harry Potter to Star Trek to True Blood and everything in between.

Her character (which is the same in EVERY story) is quite literally the definition of a Mary Sue. First of all, the character is very blatanly this girl just in "pretty form". Second, the character is a know-it-all (self-proclaimed, in the stories) and is perfect at everything! From magic of all kinds in her Harry Potter story to knowing every alien language in her Star Trek story. Also, she is so gorgeous that she inspires even characters like Spock, Snape, and Eric Northman to swoon. She also makes every canon character completely OOC so that they can be in awe of her character. Not to mention, every canon character in every fandom absolutely loves her, not one person hates this character, not even villains (Voldemort included!). She also crosses over fandoms that have absolutely nothing to do with each other so that, again, she can make canon characters drool over the character. Such as writing a True Blood fic but having her character from the Harry Potter universe so that she can have some awesome powers with which to annoy Bill.

Be glad that this girl has never posted on ff.net, for she is the kind of writer that gives the rest of us bad names. I hope you all don't think I'm bitchy for this, but it's the truth.

66 Name: Bitch Goddess : 2011-01-02 16:38 ID:4+uvbCml

>>65 She didn't, thankfully, cuz I wouldn't have had any idea what to tell her. However, she did insist on telling me about her stories all effing semester, drove me nuts.

67 Name: Smile_Grim : 2011-01-02 21:22 ID:rD+vsKwN

I nominate Yuri from A Son's Path:the Last Namikaze by laydee kai (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4463470/7/A_Sons_Path_the_Last_Namikaze) She's introduced in chapter 17 I think.

The fanfic starts off absolutely fine until then. Naruto mentions her in earlier chapters but at first it just seems like she was just a "friend with benefits" he visited every so often when he went to the Mist Village. Later on, he mentions how much he loves her. After he introductory chapter, we finds out she's the Mizukage's niece and that she was trained by Zabuza, the Demon of the Mist. Other characters also add their two cents by saying how much she and Kushina (Naruto's late mother) have in common, making her and Naruto the perfect couple since he is already following his father's footsteps. She's strong and well liked by almost everyone.

She claims that Zabuza's blade (which is in the possession of Suigetsu) is rightfully hers and that she is the second coming of the Demon of the Mist.

Any comments?

>>59 I really liked Max, until y'all pointed this stuff out... :'(
Totally agree about Zoey. The series is so ridiculous, but so hooking. And there are SOOOOOOO many inconsistancies throughout the whole thing...
For example: four or five books in, every character kept saying "I heart me some blahblahblah", but only in that book. In Burned, Stevie Rae keeps saying "She has the right to (look like crap, be paranoid, etc) because sh almost died 2 days ago". And Aphrodite is suddenly throwing the word "retarded" around like a six-year-old who just learnd the word Fart. And in maybe Tempted was it? Erik was suddenly a total bitch to everybody, even though he'd been a super awesome guy the entire first half of the series. And everyone started out with flip-phones at the beginning of the series, but all have iPhones at the end.
I'm sure there's more I can't remember, but I feel much better after that little rant :)

69 Name: Anonymous : 2011-02-20 14:21 ID:UO8bquwv

>>56: While I totally agree with you about the nineteen year old thing, I've gotta say it: that pretty much makes Robin(s) qualify as a sue(s) in the Batman comics. XD but it's the DC verse, so it's okay.

70 Name: Marth : 2011-02-21 13:42 ID:g2RtZcaZ

>>69 Actually, I don't think they do. The two big things that make a Sue (for me, at least) is that Sue doesn't fit comfortably in her universe, and other characters react to Sue in inappropriate ways. Any given Robin fits into the DCU in terms of things like power level, appearance, status and backstory, and given that sidekickery is also an established part of that world, Batman taking them in isn't nearly as ridiculous as it would be in, for instance, the Nolanverse.

If you, say, threw Stephanie Brown into the Babysitters Club series, she would be a huge ridiculous Sue. It's all about context.

Hinamori Amu from Shugo Chara! She has a "cool and spicy" outer personality where really she is confused and scared on the inside. Also she has special powers like purifying X-Eggs. Everyone thinks she's SOOOOOOO cool. She has a million boy crushes and is really indecisive and weak. She totally ruined Shugo Chara! by being the main character.

I don't think River Song's been mentioned yet, has she? Let's see... she can apparently fly the TARDIS better than the Doctor can; hell, she can fly the TARDIS at all; she's all "the better I know him, the less he knows me :("; the Doctor doesn't scold her for gun-usage at all; she's a recurring character who knows about what's going on, sometimes more than the Doctor; she's the sort of person the Doctor normally mocks incessantly, but instead he flirts with her; the Doctor flirts with her; oh... and every episode she's in bloody revolves around her!
