Ok I am absoloutely in love with Darren Shan's vampire and demonata books. I've also seen the movie for Cirque Du Freak and thought that it was pretty decent.
So anyway, I just want to know if anyone likes his books also I'd like some people to help me argue that it's better than the abomanation that is Twilight. I swear to god I just can't continue reading those books anymore I have to read Darren Shan to cheer me up because it's just so horribley written (Twilight not DS).
Also I want to know people's fav characters from the books. Mines are Darren, Steve, Larten, Kurda, Vancha and Murlough (Oh you know he's awsome)
OMG i so agree. Darren Shan wipes the floor with Stephanie Meyer. He's an amazing writer, the Demonata series is good as well. My fave characters are Mr. Crepsley, Arra, Kurda and Steve. I serioulsy need to stop liking characters, something bad always happens to them
Finally! Some other, sensible people will agree that Stephanie Meyer is not 'the best writer ever' as some people i know say. Personally i never got the whole Twilight obsession. I tried reading it but it was just so awful! Wrote one line then explained the line then baisically wrote it again in different words! Plus, to me, the plot goes too slowly.
Umm ... fav characters ... i dont really know! I suppose Darren, Mr. Crepsley, Arra and Steve (helped by the fact that he gets a crossbow! Dont ask, i just love those types of things!)
>>3 I liked Twilight like half-way through the first one but after that I just couldn't read it anymore, it was just so annoying and poorly written.
And I love Steve simply because so deliciously evil. The only thing I don't like about him is that he killed poor Shancus :(
HE WHAT!? I really need to finish the book now, thats just horrible
Oh crap I should've put up a spioler alert shouldn't I?
yeah I read them when I was a bit younger... I think I was about... 15? 16? who knows!? (and more importantly who cares!?) I loved them. id say mr crepsley was my fave
yes Darth you should
He is awesome. They should make a decent film on The Demonata. Seriously, the film for Cirque Du Freak...looks...crap.
yeah it doesn't look to impressive does it...
Actually it's not too bad. It's got a lot of changes in it but it's an OK movie, still don't like a lot of the changes but I'll go to see the next one if they make it.
And a Demonata movie would be AWSOME! As long as it had good actors who actually look how you imagine them.
The cique movie is pretty good but you have to try and ignore that little voice in your head that says "But what about...!"
i've seen the trailers and Darren posted a lot on his blog that the film is, in his words 'its own beast' its loosley based on the book but isn't a faithful adaptation, ie getting rid of debbie and replacing her with a monkey girl called rebecca who i incedently share names with.
I absolutely LOVE Darren Shan!! he is a brilliant writer!!
i'm re-reading his Demonata saga and will probably read the vampire saga again!!
i saw the film a while ago and thought it was pretty good too ^^
xxx
I've only read the first book (Cirque de Freak) and I'm waiting for the next one, but my friend told me what happens.
The movie, sadly, completely killed the book. It's funny, but ever so slightly off topic...
I've read the first free that make the movie. The books are far better than the movie as i found it jumped to different places quickly without much warning. I'm not sure if i'll continued reading them thouhg ...
@16: you should keep reading!!! the books are so much better than the movie makes them out to be!!! it gets beeter btw, you'll soonn realise...if you read ^^ lol
xxx
This is just a repeat of what happened with Twilight. I used to say to everyone how they should read it, and they all used to say it was just wierd. Then, when the movie came out, everyone was suddenly in love with it.
I saw the film when it first came out, mostly because I wantd to compare it to the books, and was mightily peeved with what I saw. I mean, the fight scenes are terrible. They play catch with a knife, for heavens sake.
Movie was a dissapointment.
Darren Shan ROCKS!!!! I got books 1-6 from the Cirque Du Freak Saga on my bday, but I didn't read them until after I'de seen the movie, and now I can't find 7-12 anywhere!
Twilight is just... eurgh. I used to like it, then Breaking Dawn came out, and then the movie... it just ruined it for me.
My dad started watching the movie at 10pm one night, but he couldn't finish it. He said "Vampires that sparkle. Just... no" And to be honest, I agree with him.
Darren Shan, however, has more believable vampire ideas, that aren't stereotypical (I hate stereotypical), and allow the vampires to seem human, and less like monsters.
As I hadn't read the books before I'de seen the movie, I can't really complain. Josh Hutcherson as Steve was... admittedly weird, but still okay. And John C reilly as Mr Crepsley was hilarious!
OMG me a obessed twilight loves the darren shan saga MILESS better than twilight a) better written b) i called Edward a sparklepire and c) IT JUST BETTER nt the film is awesome !!! John c reilly was not much like mr crepsley BUT I LOVE HIM IN THE ROLE!!!! n i alway thought that darren shan was english (well me being english might have something to do with that ...) :d IT ROCKS DUDES!!!!!
Yeah, considering the author of Darren Shan is from Ireland, I'd say the characters are either English, or Irish. I personally think they're English.
The movie was okay, and I think having American 'people' instead of English put a whole new spin on the series.
yes finally fellow darren shan lovers lol
i absolutly LOVE all his books amazing!
saying that i havnt seen the movie, it looks more of a comedy and i was hoping it would be horror-ish
still Darren Shan rocks, :D
I love darren shan (and im from ireland so some day I'm gonna go down south and steal him-_-) at the end of book 9 of demonata I suddenly hated the series cause i thought he was gna give a crappy ending, but it was amazing, albeit it was similar to the sagas (go back in time yada ya) but it was better y'know?
I also don't like how grubbs came from a horrified teenager to a blooddriven.. thing?
Omgosh I'm only on book four of the Darren Shan saga and its awseome! XD And I just got book 10 of The Demonata today, I hope it has a good ending, it would be so disapointing if it was a cop out -_-
Darren Shan is awesome! I can't actually stand Twilight, and cannot even bring myself to read it. It's too fawned over for my liking, and rom what I have heard/seen, it pales in comprison to the epicness that is Darren Shan.
I absolutely love Larten Crepsley, I cried when he died ^^; I like Evra Von as well and Murlough (I just love that crazy guy XD). Steves pretty awesome too XD
I need to read the last 2 books of the Demonata series, and hope to not be disappointed by it XD
Darren Shan!!!!!!!!!!!
♥♥♥Mrs Crepsley♥♥♥
It does get dispointing in the last trilogy but we can't have everything. i like what he writes but, his actual style is something i'm not too keen on i guess it's because he's meant to be a 10 year old and his dairy so he writes in that way (just got that) and yes i am married to mr crepsley and darrn is our child :)
But yeah Meyer smells but, i must say what beats the two of them together is let the right one in.
I loved the Darren Shan saga, but the movie completely ripped it apart! Plus the end of the Demonata series, weak assed ending, completely crap!
Dammit! I went shopping on Sunday (14th December), to buy xmas presents, and I went into WHSmiths. Books 7-12 od Darren Shan were there, and the new Alex Rider, which I haven't read either.
I didn't have enough money! It's not fair! And now, reading this, I think I found major spoilers for 7-12. Oh. Feck.
I'm gonna go, before I find more, and get really p****d off. Bye!
Shan is an author of Win. One of the best writing for young adults right now. Loved the Saga, Koyasan and the Demonata (tho would've liked a wee bit more Kernel) but... frik.
Ok SPOILERS people OMG SPOILERS!!!
The ending to Demonata. The. Ending. That freakin' reset button, the whole "magic thingum solves everything with magic". I LOVE those books. I so wanted it to end well. Saga did the same thing of giving the main character a second chance, but that was AFTER he'd saved everyone with awesome, as a sort of reward. Demonata just kinda skipped the denouement, after books of character and plot development, it felt like the ending was written as, well as a "fix fic" from a well-meaning but inexperienced fan.
Compare it to the end of Lord Loss, the build up of hoplessness, then Grubbs has his epiphany re: Loss' weakness, and awesome commences. It was great, he solved it with wits and brains, not just -oh hell.
I hope you don't think I'm just flaming, I really do love these books and this is my one solitary complaint in an otherwise amazing set of works. I wish I could join in with the love here, but right now that ending is way too fresh in my mind. I've kinda barged in and spread a bit of gloom and wrath all over the place, and I really am sorry.
I still have to read the last Demonata book. Darren Shan is a writing god. Both the Darren Shan Saga and the Demonata are so amazingly well written and immersive.
What amazes me most about the Darren Shan Saga is the way he managed to create a whole separate world alongside those of the humans, on the same planet. And the final trilogy was just too awesome for words.
As for the Demonata, I suppose the same thing goes although here the universe of the Demonata is separated from ours. I just need to buy the final book....
Oh, and the...well, in Dutch it's called the Doodsteken, literally the Sign of Death the vampires make when one of them has fallen, together with the words 'May you triumph even in death' are the things I do at funerals, just because their meaning is so...well, deep, I guess.
I have read some books of the saga, but not all since my library doesn't have them all. From what I read though, I find them a load better than Twilight (yes I have read those too, I have this annoying habit to read all the books of a saga/series no matter how bad they are. It's a compelling need.)
Darren Shan --> Twilight. This comes from someone who actually likes Twilight. The Darren Shan universe is just much more varied and mystic than Twilight, and the vampires make a lot more sense. Combine that excellent world with the compelling writing style and you have pretty much the best vampire books you can get.
As for vampire-related things overall...I'm torn between Darren Shan and Legacy of Kain.
Darren Shan > Harry Potter films > Inkheart film > Eragon film > One Piece dub > Twilight books > My Immortal > Twilight films.
I love all darren shan books but I do have to say that the thin executioner is one of my favorite shan books. I liked, kurda, evra, alice, Mr crepsly, evanna and Vancha best. Vancha was my favorite. When Gavner died his last lines made me cry, and i never realy cry at books. And I agree that saga of darren shan are better that twilight, although I don't like the new covers as much as i liked the old ones. I think shan did a much better job at wrriting vampires than meyer. And i just loved the idea of the deaths touch sign.
I realy did like the demonata series, best book for me there was Bec because I love the time when it was set with the Macconn tribe and the tuath and all the old stuff.
I read them in 6th grade, I feel in love with Cirque du Freak. Even though I like Twilight, Cirque du Freak and The Vampire Chronicles are the best series I've read.
