i am a all-out fangirl of yaoi! there are some cases where i read some yaoi stories and they are written by guys. When i read the reviews, i see some anonymous reviewers saying how only gay guys read, write, and like yaoi. and same goes with girl authors and yuri stories. does this have ANYTHING to do with sexual preference? in my opinion i think that more girls like yaoi and more guys would like yuri. any thoughts?
It makes sense, I can't see how a straight guy could get into a sex scene between two guys, and would much prefer picturing girls doing it.
I think it is hard to say, because it is so rare to find a guy who reads and writes fanfiction in the first place. It has nothing to do with sexual preference either, because I know of quite a few strait people who write slash, and only slash.
I found a story where a straight married guy did a malexmale story. I think it all depends on the persons tolerance of each.
For me I like all three really. I just tend to write more guysxguys because I'm more familiar. GirlsxGirls is hard due to a bad relationship with one and for Het its so-so. So I also think experiances with these kind of things determine the persons view of each.

i know! and i found a really good male slash writer! hes so funny in his fics =D but it sometimes stinks to see like random reviews saying that the fic was gay or the author was. if they think its gay, why were they reading it? i mean it was in the correct category. i appreciate how the author doesnt let petty comments like these to stop him from uploading funny fictions.
>>5 - I don't like slash, but that is one of the things I HATE seeing happen to people. It's just as bad as saying guys who dress feministically are gay, or guys that look girlish are gay. I HATE IT, I HATE IT, I HATE IT!!! Doesn't help, when I first joined fanfiction.net, I had to deal with people who made Legolas gay, simply because he was a pretty boy, no other reason. LAME!
YAOI IS AWESOME!!!!!!!! TOTALLY LOVE IT!!!!! I don't know what to exactly say... first time trying but I hope this isn't bad for a start.
>>7 - I get that you like Yaoi. However, you may want to re-read the opening to the thread. There was a very specific discussion going on...
I whole heartlessly with >>3
it is indeed hard to say because there are way TOO few guys in FF net anyway.
Also Yaoi is basically something written by women for women [straight women at that] but of course there will be exceptions and some men [and I mean straight men] will read too.
yuri on the other hand is another story, I'm in a Yuri fandom and I haven't seen a single male writer EVER. I myself am an asexual woman with straight tendencies. Also there are writers who are married with kids, or just married or straight women. sexuality has nothing to do with your fav pairing. my favorite gay friend writes fics about his fav Hetero pairing :) and he watched the whole series of The L Word, that seriously doesn't make him a lesbian :P
I personally hate yaoi, because I as a straight guy don't want to read/write about two guys. I do like yuri these days, but not because I like to see a sex scene between two girls or anything. I'm just obsessed with cute and yuri can be extremely cute, more so than het or yaoi.
On-topic now: From what I know most girls like to write yaoi, but I know some girls who are really into yuri. Hell, they got me into it. The guys I know who write are mostly into het pairings. In fact, I don't know any guys who write yaoi, and only one who writes yuri. (That one being myself) In conclusion, I think it really depends on your own preferences, and that a person's sexuality doesn't necessarily comes into play.
I'm not a fan of yaoi, yuri, het, whatever... I'm a fan of individual pairings. So for example, I ship Marik and Yami Bakura from Yu-gi-oh, but I also love Rogue and Gambit from X-men. I think it's the characters that's the important thing, not what sexuality the couple are.
There is a writer on FF.net whose girlfriend got him into yaoi writing. I can't remember his name, but his girlfriends is Au Revoir Amour. I think it's just because her name is Goodbye Love, that is stood out to me.
I'm a yaoi reader and a gen writer. I've written one mild het, but I rarely read het. I think there are a grand total of three het fics on my favourite. I'm also a girl. I rarely read yuri, but I'm bisexual. I don't think it matter who you're attracted to, I think it just matters who you like reading about. I personally think Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy or more suited together than Harry and Ginny, but I also think Neville and Luna are great together.
For the most part, I'm like Lupa - individual pairings are key. In my main fandom, when I'm not writing gen, my ship preference leans towards Jack/Carly (my OTP and a canon pairing), but I also like Jack/Kazama; but in Bleach, asides from Ikkaku/Yumichika (which can be either pairing-or-bromance), I lean almost exclusively towards het pairings. I think it depends on the initial material, and the characters involved, on whether I'd choose any particular type of pairing - if any.
>>9 - Whenever I find a guy writer, I'm like, yay! Actually, the one person I've so far ever pulled off a co-story on, is male. we bounce ideas back and forth, and I think... if it weren't for him, it would not be anywhere near as good of a story, if I had just done it on my own.
>>10 - I am not sure if that really is off topic. As a female, you are probabbly the first male slash writer I can say I've met, as all the ones I meet personally, have been het writers. Then again, I stick to the het side of writing when it comes to fanfiction. If it is original work, I am not so bothered with it, because it is someone elses characters, that I know they created to be that way.
>>12 - I might not be a slash reader or writer, but I personally agree that Harry/Draco has more dynamics then Harry/Ginny. I think, it has to do with the fact, Ginny's character was developed to be third string in importance, to even characters like Luna and Nevile, and recieved less true development.
>>13 - You reminded me of the fact that in Bleach, I had someone who is typically a fan of slash pairings, but told me that they couldn't stomach Gin/Toshiro.
I also like the term bromance. Two guys who are close to each other, might be gay, but not necisarily. I still remember the three preteens giggling behind me in the movie theater for LotR, when Borimer dies, and Aragorn does what is concidered traditional during that time frame.
I am a guy and I tend to read stories that don't focus on romance. When I do, I stay on the stright and narrow. Nothing aginst the others, I just don't like it, not even the Yuri.
I write yuri, and I'm a girl. I don't like yaoi despite the fact that I support a few yaoi pairings. And I just can't get it over my heart to write het. I just can't. :I
I've got nothing against straight people --or homosexuals for that matter: I'm bisexual myself. But I don't think that has anything to do with it. I know a guy who likes both yuri and yaoi, but is straight. So yeah. Depends.
@KatonRyu: HELL YEAH. 'T was about time you started writing yuri! I'm glad you enjoy being on the dark side. You want a cookie? :'D
I'm a basically asexual girl, though I am straight (on a look but don't touch thing :P) and I tend to stick to het pairings (I read the occasional yaoi, but most are no great or feminise otherwise awesome characters), simply because I find it easiest to write. Most fanfiction writers seem to be female, so seeing a male is really a novelty.
@KatonRyu, hey there man. Whats it like surrounded by all this oestrogen?
What I'd love to see and want to try out myself, is a story with no pairings so to speak. The main focus being adventure or action as opposed to romance.
@14, I also like of bromance like House/Wilson (I can't see them in a romantic relationship of any sorts, but they are kinda borderline that y'know).
So this is just my two cents on the topic.
@KatonRyu: -gives a cookie- good boy :3
I think I just got wierded out, possibly from the fact that it seems like I am not partial to some inside joke or something. Oh well... :)
@Yemi Hikari: yeah, well not really an inside joke, but nevertheless, I'm sorry I weirded you out :') I won't do it again n_n
>>21 - It's all right... just... wierd.
>>20 It's not so much an inside joke as it's that we know each other IRL:P This is pretty normal, actually:P
>>23 - Ahh. That still makes sense.
I'm a lesbian yaoi/slash fan. I don't get it either. But it's the guys, more than the fact that they are guys, that I'm interested in.
I'm a guy/girl writer, but a lot of my 'fave'd stories involve yaoi. I love it! I just don't know how to write it.
>>25 & >>26 - I think both of you missed the point of the thread. It was asking if preferance of reading had anything to do with preferance to sexual orintation. It was asked because someone saw guys who wrote slash being called gay, when that isn't necisarily true. Though, it is nice both of you are this exuberant.
I hate people who review a story like that by saying "Only gay guys do this or that" and stuff. I don't write Yaoi or Yuri but I just LOVE it! I kinda like Het but I'm more of Yuri and Yaoi! I mean can't anyways appericiate love the way is is even if it's in a story!
UUGHHHHHH!!! People couldn't be more wrong about this! i think, I'm pan sexual and I like only yaoi and slash stories and thats all i write! I hate het, although I have a boyfriend and I'm a girl, and I just dont like yuri much although I also like girls. see, I just prefer the bpy on man or the man on man ...or even the boy on boy lol
XXXSEIXXX
I write het and read yaoi, I ocationally read yuri. I am a straight female and to me what you like to write/read has nothing to do which gender or sexual orintation. My best friend is bi and she can't stand yuri but loves yaoi and is also a female. Also to me it is more about which characters for example in Supernatural I like the Dean/Castiel pairing and Sam/Gabriel but hate Sam/Dean and Castiel/Gabriel becasue they are brothers and the pairings Dean/Gabriel and Sam/Castiel I sometimes read but it really has to be well written or I really don't like it. To me I think the biggest thing is that people shouldn't be jugeded by the stories they write/read becuase it doesn't matter what your sexual orintation is as long as you are happy with it. Love comes in many different forms so who are we to judge?
Uhm...I'm a guy...and I'm totally straight. I honestly don't think that sexual preference has ANYTHING to do with Yaoi/Yuri. It's all about the characters and how they interact. (Even though I probably will never intentionally read a Yaoi story...) In fact, I am a proponent for Yuri stories. There just isn't enough of them. (Great...Now I sound like some dirty old man...)
>>28 - For one of my Bleach fanfics I had someone ask if I really did mean to have hints of Toshiro/Karin and Toshiro/Ichigo. The first one, yes... I ship that one, but I don't write slash for my own reasons. Toshrio/Ichigo was simply a brother/brother relationship, not a boyfriend/boyfriend relationship in my fanfic. I can see why they might think that, but that is using sterotypes there for the most part.
