So I was considering setting up a forum on FanFiction.net, mainly with the aim of getting people to read/review your work - I don't know about any one else, but I find it difficult to get feedback on fanfiction and thought it might be a good idea. Of course, there'll be boards where you can just talk, get writing tips, ask questions etc. What do you think?

There is already something like this on FFNet, if I recall. You just have to be a little assiduous in looking for it.

That aside, whether it'd be a good idea depends on how you do it. If it's just a forum full of people going "R&R MY WORK PLEEEEEEEEZE" then it won't work. It has to be a genuinely helpful environment (with people that actually know jack about writing), with an emphasis on giving concrit/help rather than just review whoring.

I speak from experience here; I'm a member of a fanfiction writer's forum. (Not that there's ever been any point were we were OMG REVEIW HOORS, but the times when we were most inactive were when we lost sight of the 'helping people write better' goal a bit... I ramble.)

I like it. I too am getting trouble having my work reviewed. Any effort to get some encouragement or constructive criticism is extremely valued.

Yeah, I was thinking of trying to focus it on criticism, encourage people to give slightly detailed reviews on stories rather than "LOVE IT UPDATE SOON PLZ!". I'd also like to do it where it's like an exchange, so the idea is if someone gives you a review, you review back. Unless of course all of their stuff is in a fandom you know absolutly nothing about, in which case...I don't know. But I think people are likely to read in the same areas they've written in anyway. So yeah.
just need to think of a name for it now...

Actually, Ellipsy, I think you're thinking of the phrase 'you don't know jack'. In which case knowing jack would indeed be knowing something. I don't think that's a cultural difference, and I've lived on your tiny little island for quite a while. =P

Or maybe I'm just horribly confused. Could be that, too.

Also, >>8: Review exchanges are great stuff. With regards to not knowing a fandom, why not partition your forum into separate sections for books, movies, anime, etc., and then let users form their own fandom-specific threads for reviews?

Of course, that's assuming it's possible. I don't know what it's like setting up a forum on FFNet.

@Duxy McDuxDux-When I say 'here', I'm referring to my city, as I have no idea about the rest of my tiny island WITHOUT THE ARMADA THAT SANK HORRIBLY. Bwaha. Anyway, we use 'you don't know jack' and 'you know jack' interchangeably, and 'you don't know jack' works like a double-negative. Saying 'you know jack about...' never means 'you know something about...' here.

So one could say, 'Jack knows jack about jacking jacks,' which is always fun.

Actually, having seperate areas for different fandoms is a really good idea. I'm going to work on it this afternoon, I'll post a link up once I've got it done & thought of a name. Cheers for your help guys.
