okay once or twice it can be excuses but esspecilly in stories conatining lemons leave off the cliches "I think i was born just to love you" PLEASE!!!
Depends, really, on how seriously the cheese is intended to be taken. There's a difference between plain bad dialogue and affectionate celebrations of rather worn-out classics. Besides, some characters are just like that - no story is complete without at least a slice of ham.
That and then you can easily have the character who has never known any form of love before and just spouts the lines because they think it's correct XD and turns out to be cheesy.
It really depends on what the story is.... but yeah sometimes it can =_=''
It sure depends on the story, but mostly it does for me. The always cliche lines make me stop reading.
If it's supposed to be cheesy, if that's the author's intention and it works, then it's forgivable. However, nothing should be included if it lacks a meaning or purpose/
If anyone here likes yaoi, and has ever read the works of Minami Haruka they will know every story she writes goes by the basis of wham, bam, thank you m'am. It goes sex sex sex I love you more sex. And they way they come out with it- "Yuki, I have loved ever since I first met you despite that being only two days ago"- is EXTREMELY CHEESY.
Do not bother doing lots of sex scenes and then coming out with love confessions that are only a sentance long. That in itself is cheesy... '~'
If it's relevant to the story and the moment then the odd cheesy line can make a story as well as ruining it.
It's all dependent on the story, isn't it? I mean, a cheesy plotline needs cheesy lines. A naturalistic or non-comedic pieces deserves NO CHEESE. In the vocabulary sense of the word

Rivala > I plead guilty... I have all her stuff - well, I have all Yamane Ayano's too and it's not exactly like... Swiss fondue, cheese like. (Why did I just think of Hetalia? TT)
I agree that if the author wants cheese, so be it. I love it in fics where the other chara would like... 1. Make a 'wtf' face; 2. ask himself WHY he ended up with this one; 3. whack the cheese addict.
But yeah, in more like... serious and naturalistic works, cheese can really be off. Though nothing beats cotton candy-like fluff.
Bola > Worst is when cheese is at the very end... I don't know you, but I'd feel... betrayed. /Sorta
It all depends on the characters I think. If you can see the characters coming out with the cheesy lines for real, then it's fine. It's when the characters go OOC merely so the writer can do something completely insane with them, that it gets annoying.
I once used 'encyclopedia of sorrow' as a metaphor, why on earth did no one call me on that!? It's a terrible line, thank kami I noticed.
I am really uncomfortabe writing romance, which is a shame because I love reading it. It's why I'm incapable of writing dramatic, angsty pieces without them turning out really bad. It's a way to take the focus off the bits you're uncomfortable about, I suppose, one of the reasons I prefer humour; you can put in lot's of cheese! I read a really odd fic once, which was Ok because it was supposed to be weird, it was made up of a bunch of food metaphors and similes thrown together. It was funny at first but also kind of pathetic. (not in a nasty way)
I mean because almost all of the ridiculous things there I have actually read in fics.
In an angst fic it is really difficult to take it seriously if the pit of despair is made of fluffy marshmallow clouds that have you wrapped in their terribly tender tendrils of torture and torment. ( I almsot added ticklish but stopped myself in time)
>>14 oh and don't forget the fluffy bunny-rabbits of tickleish torture :P. What? Tickleish HAD to be put in there somewhere hehehe.
Cheesy lines in crackfics are the best! - I'm reading an Hetalia fanfic with basically, Prussia seeking a princess and end up in front of Switzerland being all: Marry me! And Be my bride! And... I'm so awesome, how can you refuse. Point was... you almost can take him seriously until he gets shot at. (I'm strange)
I should write some angsty fic like: A is depressed and everything is so horrible and so on. The B arrives with an horribly cheesy line - gets told off only to say: Well, because YOU think that angsty like some 13 yo teen isn't pathetic? Especially when you consider the fact that you are sitting in a pink, marshmallow shaped couch, one hand in the bag of candies?
Or something like that... hum... Thanks Lyssa.^^
I think cheesy lines are bearable-to-great-to-hilariouslyfunny, however if you write a really good, complex absolutely amazing fic then end it on a really cheesy line or cliche it ruins the whole thing for me! It's dissapointing and weird if its in a different tone to the rest but if its written in well and its like 'I saw that coming but nothing else could fit quite so well' then thats fine, isnt it?
True, true. I piece of original writing I saw off Quizilla once (hey, no judging!) had very cliche lines. A few were put in for the hell of it, though, I'm sure of it. "I just LOVE a man in a uniform" etc. Kinda ruined it a little. But apart from that, it was pretty decent, and most cliched bits had me laughing in hysterics.
