Is anyone up for a oneshot contest? I want to post one here for a bit of fun, but I'd like to know how much interest there is first. Any fandoms would be accepted, so post if you're interested! Is this a bad idea?
Also, ideas about the restrictions/specifications of the contest are appreciated - for example, a lemon contest, a K/K+ rated fic contest, a non-romance contest, a T rated fic contest, a slashfic contest, a contest for oneshots under 1,000 words, are all ideas that occured to me off the top of my head.
Lemons? Count me in! Haha!
Yeah, I'd be up for doing a random contest.
Ooh, I'm in. Would do a buffy or harry potter one.
Ooh, I'm in. Would do a buffy or harry potter one.
One question...who would judge? And there's soooo many things to write about, would there be a specification, for example, it must be one of the following...Dr.Who, Buffy, Harry potter, Naruto...etc? Im up for it, just wondering how it would be contested :S
Given the sheer number of fandoms out there, it might be an interesting idea to have the contest criteria be the type and theme of fanfic, rather than what it's a fanfic of. Since the judges would (presumably) not be omniscient, this would present the extra challenge of writing something that does not require intimate knowledge of your chosen setting.
It's a thought, anyway.
I'm in for a contest! I like that idea of a criteria that could apply to any setting as it would make it more fun for the writer as they could write ooc and still write a powerful or fun peice as there are no character restrictions.
I also like the sound of a non romance fic for something different.
I'm up for it!
What about having an original fiction contest? That way, no one has to know the characters, because they're owned by the authors, and anyone can participate.
I'd do it.
I agree with the idea of having a general theme instead of writing for a particular fandom.
I'd be up for it, and the theme instead of a fandom is a good idea. Maybe give a prompt or something that the people would have to write for. Something I'm currently working on is a love collection where the author is given two characters at random and has to write a one-shot for it. Maybe they choose the fandom, and they have to do that, with the added challenge of making it so those outside the fandom could understand it.
It would be possible to do it by poll (on someone's FFN page, presumably), but that doesn't really help some fandoms being more popular/well-known than others.
I would say either (a) have a group of at least three judges, who cover as wide a range of fandoms as possible--and that way, the judges could write for it too, since there would be enough for the other people to evaluate their work, or (b) go with Vic's excellent suggestion and have an original fiction contest.
If we go with fanfic, I think one of the rules should be that extensive fandom knowledge should not be required in order for the fic to make sense.
If we go with original fiction, that's not a problem, so all we'd need is a theme or genre or whatever.
I'd be up for it, but I kinda like the idea of an original short story contest...like give a prompt, a theme and a word limit and let people be creative.
Either way it could be fun if I find the time!
Love the idea, I'm in!
Like the idea of a little OOC-ness since not many people on here read Pokémon fanfictions (which I write) so I suppose it gives me more freedom and I can make the characters my own, yay!
i'm in but for what though?
Okay, we've got a good few people. :)
How are we going to decide what the competition's going to be?
I'd advise setting a limit on word-count - short stories are easier and less time-consuming to judge.
All right then... How about 1000 to 1500 words?
Perhaps a bit longer? I don't know about the others but I prefer oneshots that are around 2000-2500 words
Well, that can be the upper limit then. We don't really need a lower limit. :)
All in favour of having a 2000-2500 upper word limit?
but what are we gonna write for? are did i miss something here?
true
I was thinking we could go through one thing at a time, deciding on each part of the competition, but it would take a while, I guess.
We need other people's opinions!
Would someone want to start a forum of ff.net where we could discuss this more fully and use polls. For the upper limit, I suggest 3-4k. People don't have to go that high, but that would give those who do enough time to fully develep their story. I also like the idea of not restricting the fandom, but make a qualification it has to be understandable to those outside it.
I'd be willing to create a forum on ff.net if people are interested.
Okay. :)
I'll post the link here when it's done.
Okay. :)
I'll post the link here when it's done.
Sorry. Double post. Any ideas what I should call the forum. It's 1:30am and my brain isn't working.
Okay, cool.
XD Not too far off.
Thanks Vic for creating the forum! disappears to ff.net to post
Anyone who wants to enter our first competition, follow the directions on this link:

Just bumping this back up to the top of the page. We need people!
Hey, I already entered. So, just to get this right. Sorry, English isn't my first language. XD So, we are supposed to write original fiction between 500 and 3000 words, rated from K to T, based on the image posted on the fanfiction forum (the one with the woman and the child in the field of poppies) in two weeks, starting from February 1, and post it on our fictionpress account before February 14 and then... post a link to our writings on the forum or here?
You write a short story/one-shot entry, ranging from 500 to 3000 words, rated K to T, from the inspiration you get when you look at the picture prompt.
The contest will "officially" open on the 1st of Feb, and that is when you post. You post the story on your FictionPress account (if you haven't got one, then ask in the Questions/Suggestions thread and we'll work soemthing out) and post the link to the story in the February thread.
The cut off date for posting is the 14th of Feb. Is that all clear?
Oh, I forgot, it has to be original fiction too. :)
Anyone else want to join?
I've just signed up. Sounds like a plan!
Great! :)
And if anyone can recommend this to their friends, it would get off the ground a lot faster. Thanks!
Yep. Everything's clear. :) Thank you for explaining! I really like the idea! :)
Heh, come on. There have to be more than three competitors.
There are actually three more possible people who might enter. One is definite and I'm sweet talking the other two right now. ;)
Good stuff!
The definite person is going to sign up in a few hours, once I show her how.
One of the others is leaning towards it. Haven't heard back from the third person though.
:) Use your charm! :)
I'm trying to talk my wife in it as well.
I shall. ;)
Does your wife write then, Bola?
She's entering. Oh yes, she does. My wife and I met on fanfiction.net -blushing-
She's written far more fanfiction as I have. And original fiction as well. She has already managed to write three or four books, but neither got published.
Aw, that's so sweet. Tell her kudos on writing the books as well. :)
Does she have her own account on FF or FP, or will you be posting a link to her story as well as your own?
She has both accounts, but for some reason she can't post on the forum, so I'll be giving a link to mine and hers story. I'll distinct clearly which story is from who. She has an account on FF under AdmiralGunwolf2008 and one on FP under The Black Pirate.
Okay, thanks Bola. :)
So now we have 4 official contestants, 1 other signing up soon, 1 sitting on the fence, and 1 who I haven't even heard an answer back from.
The 5th person signed up. :)
Yay!
The person who was on the fence now is saying she might not sign up though. :(
Don't know where we're going to get more people from, but I suppose 5 isn't bad for the first contest.
I've advertised around a few sites, so we might get a bit of response from them, but at the end of the day we did only start planning it three days ago. 5 for the first contest is okay.
Yeah, I guess it is a good start. :)
Bump!
Registration closes on the 1st, people. Move fast!
I think I'll wait til the next one. Was going to sign up for this but I had exams (Kiiillll theeeem!!)
Can't wait to see the results of this one though :)
ooooooh sounds like fun, i'll do u a good deed and put this back at top ^^, its sounds fun to read. XD about me entering though, i have a fanfiction account, but its a bad idea. My strong point isnt exactly gramma, ^^ although im told i have good idea's
I'd love to join! :)
Though, it seems I'm too late for this round, so, that's okay. :)
xxxxxx
Both of you are welcome to join next month. This month's contest closes on the 14th and you can register for next month on the 25th. :)
Hey Vic, and when is the winner of this month being announced?
What are the conditions? Like any specific requirements?
@Bola - The winner will be announced on the 25th, just before I open next month's registration.
@Francys Pai - All the rules can be found in the 1st post here:
I'm still a slight bit confused, can it be any pairing or does it have to be original fic?
So is this for fanfics or originalfics?
Original.
Oh, I gonna need a fictionpress account soon
are they all going to be original competitions or will there be fanfic ones too?
i love it, awesome
i love it, awesome
i love it, awesome
I suppose all of them are going to be original ones. In post 71 is a link to the 'rules' if you need more information.
@LASER - They're all going to be original, as that means anyone can enter.
And if you don't have a FictionPress account, you can request one of the judges to post your entry on their account. :)
I'm a little confused, but I'd like to take part :] I have a fictionpress account as well so that's lucky! So, I write a oneshot or short story based on the inspiration I get from the picture, then post it on my fictionpress account and then post the link here? I'm a bit late but I'll dig something out of my brain :L x
I suggest you ask Vic to make sure, but I think that the 'signing up' for this month's competition has ended.
@Mulfy - If you could wait until next month to enter, we'd welcome you with open arms. :)
This month's contest is now closed. The judges and myself will be confering on the winner, who will be announced no later than the 25th.
On the 25th, next month's contest will open, and everyone is welcome. :)
Yay!
The winner has been announced!

there should be another competetion for longer stories too where you have a few months to write it
After a few more competitions, if there are enough people entering on a regular basis, I think it would be a good idea.
But we need to run a few more contests first, as starting a multi-month contest without knowing if the entrants are going to be 100% reliable will likely end in disaster.
That was me on post 88. Stupid board didn't post my username. :(
