A simple question, which I think can be very useful:
What is it that you like best about fan-fiction?
I like that it can give you closure when sometimes (a lot) a tired author, cancelled TV show, or ruined series can't. And you can even give yourself closure - you can write the fanfic yourself and it can still be satisfying.
It's therapeutic. Reading it is a pleasure, it relaxes me. Writing it is an odyssey, because I'm making the characters do my bidding. It's fun.
It's creative too, which is important. As one matures in life, creativity becomes harder to achieve. Trust me on this.
I love ff it brings out my creative side
For me the best part of fanfiction is I can examine and explore a character's motivations, plus put them in situations and figure out how they would react. As Adelaide said, it also allows closure when a series I like has ended or a story's conclusion leaves me dissatisfied.
to me fanfiction is like an escape. When a book isn't enough, the fanfiction continues that journey.
it also allows me to keep my imagination alive.

I like to explore the other sides of characters and to write the scenes you'd have liked to see :) Also I like the fact that it's like a community xD
Its awesome for dabbling and developing my own ideas, and I like the FF.net community a lot so far
It's a great way to pass time, plus you don't have to think too hard about it as the worlds/characters are often already created for you and you get to play around and do pretty much whatever you like. ^_^
I love being taken into another world, and feeling like life isn't happening right now. Reading takes my mind of things going on in my life and when I come across an amazing piece of work I cannot stop reading it until I have finished the whole thing.
You can take your fantasies of being with a certain character or being in a certain situation. Or you can re-write the whole suroundings YOUR WAY.
And as Adelaide said it does give you a certain type of closure when thinsg have ended. I know on movies or tv shows where a character is persumed dead but you never know becasue it finished frustrates me. A story can then be written continuing that story line. It feels good knowing an end.
Fanfiction is the perfect mix: you are free to do whatever you like with your favourite characters, you don't have to worry overly about backstory because most of your readers will already know about the show/book etc. You don't have to create new characters but you can if you want, and you can put existing characters in a room with your own creations and anything can happen. You can change things or keep them the same, you can completely ignore whole episodes or chapters or keep everything exactly how it is. And it'll still be fanfiction. Basically you're totally free. You could say that about freestyle writing too I suppose, but with fanfiction there's so much more material open to you.
And that's why I love it. :D
I like how when the books are over, there is still somewhere to go if you still want to read about the characters more. That's just great.
And like RPatzFan101 said, it's so easy to write with pre-made characters and worlds, especially as a newish writer. It helps you focus on developing style.
I love writing fiction, and have loads of ideas for stories, but I'm really not confident enough about creating my own characters. So it's good to be able to take someone else's characters, ones that I really like, and write my ideas around them. Maybe one day I'll have the confidence to write my own novel, but right now fanfic is a good half-way stage, I guess.

I used to make them up in my head when i was bored, then realised i could write them down and put them online! wow, it was awesome, don't what i'd do without it now
Hmm... I'd say being able to put down all the ideas that come into your head whilst reading, being able to explore all the 'what ifs?', being able to write scenes you thought were missing, or explore what the other characters in the scene were thinking in a 1st person fic.
In short, it allows you to get a whole lot more from whatever the original was, it allows you to explore that fictional world more fully.
Best part: unleashing your imagination. You can create about anything you want without limits.
When you see something in the series that gets your mind wondering and being able to put your ideas to paper (or, word processor file). And on top of that, you can share it with people who appreciate it and share your thoughts :)
well i always enjoyed writing but since writing and posting on fanfiction its improved my writing and given me more confidence just from peoples reviews! i also love when other writers give you ideas for stories!
What I like about fanfiction is the fact you can write about anything at all. And it has helped my writing skills.
I think the best part about fanfiction is becoming lost in the imaginary world of the story, reading/writing for enjoyment and discovering news ways to write from other authors without being judged. It's just like you can forget who you are and be whoever who want.
You can practically make the characters do anything you want them too. they could practically grow two heads and it would be allowed because it's fanfiction!
You can even use your feelings/secrets as plots and make your main character go through the things that have happened to yourself. Don't worry I'm not talking about myself unless I have lots of male lovers :/ unfortunately I don't
Darn...
Sorry I'll stop my rant now =]
Much love

I think of fanfiction as a way get rid of the frustration I get when I read the real thing.
Naruto for instance, Naruto's sheer incompetance and inability to grasp things just drives annoys me. So I read fanfiction to see the Naruto world where Naruto is capable of thinking.
Harry Potter is another example, where Harry after 6 years of schooling, and running his own DADA club can't use anything but the same 3 or 4 spells repeatedly, despite running for his life.
Being able to write a story and post it that someone enjoys and reviews. Reviews are a very good thing about Fanfiction as it makes me want to write more :)

That people who don't even know me take time out to read and comment on something that i have created.
There is no reason for them to be nice or biased they just tell you how it is and it usually inspires me to write more :)

I think of as a way to get my feelings out, rather it be from my personal life or caused by the fandom itself. It also allows me to gain experience and try out different writing styles. It helps me grow into a better writer. And even more so when I have people who don't know me, people who don't feel the need to have to tell me that my writing is good, tell me I'm doing a great job. I like the accomplished feeling I get when I bring everything, feelings and thoughts, together and I get praised by strangers for my work.
That has to be the best parts of writing fanfiction.
>>26 - Just be careful about what you share online. From what I've seen of your comments in the forum threads you honestly have more sense then some of the other people I've met online. Lets just say some of the writers I've come across haven't got a clue how much they have revealed about themselves to the public eye.
>>27 Yeah, it's a fine line between giving a story and telling the world the problems and such.
My opinion on things is to step back and look at everything. I take in what others say and I express my opinion as well as I can. No need to get mad and flustered like a child over silly things that people say. I have no false thoughts about myself, my opinions or my writing. Anything I read I try to take into account and use for my benefit, I think it will make me better as not only a writer but also, at times, a better person. If I expect people to respect me and my opinion, I need to give them the same treatment. That's just my thought on things anyway.
You seem to be one of the sensible ones who are here to talk to, advise and treat others with the same respect you give. It's great to see more and more people like that online.
